36-year-old Sandro Peter began his journalistic career seven years ago at Radio Top. After studying journalism at the University of Zurich, he started as a reporter at Radio Top. Over the years, he continuously took on additional responsibilities as chief of staff, coordinator of court reporting and, most recently, deputy editor-in-chief.
An internal solution was also found with Sarah Frattaroli for the position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief. The 27-year-old from Winterthur studied political science and law and was then head of communications at Save the Children. She has been working at Radio Top for two years, most recently as Head of Service.
The current editor-in-chief Manuela Burgermeister is leaving Radio Top for "Blick TV" after around 13 years. Burgermeister started as a reporter at Radio Top in 2006, later becoming chief of staff and then being promoted to Head of East and Deputy Editor-in-Chief. As editor-in-chief, she has sustainably strengthened the Radio Top and Top Online brands over the past five years or so, according to a statement on Friday.
There is too much smoking on Netflix
Netflix has come under fire from health organizations for its frequent depiction of smoking in its original productions. According to a study by the Truth Initiative, productions that appeal to younger viewers—such as the mystery series «Stranger Things»—in particular show tobacco use too often. Now, the streaming service is promising to exercise restraint.

Through the most popular series alone, about 28 million young people would have seen such depictions in 2019. "This raises major public health concerns, as seeing tobacco use on screen is a critical factor in young people starting to smoke themselves," the Truth Initiative researchers wrote. Netflix, in response to the study, has announced it will show less frequent depictions of smokers in the future.
Every episode of "Stranger Things" features smoking
As part of the study, the Truth Initiative examined how often people smoke in TV series that are particularly popular with viewers between the ages of 15 and 24. Among the three most popular Netflix series were "Orange is the New Black," "Fuller House" and "Stranger Things." It turned out that Netflix shows depictions of smoking significantly more often than regular television. The streaming platform's own productions showed tobacco use more than three times as often in 2019 as in 2018.
"Stranger Things" is the prime example, which just celebrated the start of its third season on Wednesday (Advertising week reported). In the second season of the hit series, the characters smoke at least once in every episode. Twelve of the 13 Netflix series analyzed featured cigarettes or e-cigarettes. Ten of the series contained more such depictions in the current seasons than in previous seasons.
Cigarettes only for historical accuracy
In a statement, Netflix says that in the future, in-house productions that have an age restriction of 13 or lower will not feature cigarettes or e-cigarettes unless doing so involves historical accuracy, such as in depictions of real people who are smokers. "Netflix supports artistic expression. But we also recognize that smoking is harmful and that positive portrayals of it on screen can influence young people," a spokesperson for the streaming company said. (pte/swi)
In 2021, more than half of global advertising spend will go to Internet advertising
Internet advertising will account for 52 percent of global advertising spend in 2021, exceeding the 50 percent mark for the first time, according to Zenith's Advertising Expenditure Forecasts published on Monday. This is an increase on the 47 percent accounted for by internet advertising this year and 44 percent in 2018.
Editorial

July 5, 2019
However, the growth rate is falling rapidly as the internet advertising market continues to develop. Internet advertising grew by 17% in 2018, but based on the first half of 2019, growth of just 12% is expected for the current year as a whole. In 2021, growth of only 9% is expected compared to the previous year. The growth rate of the internet advertising market is therefore slowly approaching the growth rate of the market as a whole.
This growth will be driven by the online video and social media channels, for which average annual growth rates of 18% and 17% respectively are expected until 2021. These channels are benefiting from continuous technological improvements in smartphone technology, transmission rates and targeting, combined with strong growth in investment in content. The 5G technology launched earlier this year - including in Switzerland - will further improve the brand experience by making mobile connections significantly faster and more responsive.
Other channels grow much more slowly
Paid search, which accounted for 37% of internet advertising in 2018, grew by 11% this year, although the growth rate is expected to fall to 7% in 2021. In search, many innovations are taking place in the voice sector that are not yet monetized. Online classified advertising - ads that sit alongside other advertising rather than content such as job listings, real estate and used car listings - is increasingly losing ground to other digital channels and free alternatives. Online classifieds markets still grew by 9 percent worldwide in 2018, are already beginning to shrink in some markets. Global spending is expected to fall by 1.6 percent in 2021.
Most major brands continue to rely on traditional media
Much of the growth in internet advertising investment is coming from small, local companies that spend their entire budget on platforms such as Google and Facebook, as these offer simple self-service tools for managing campaigns, and from highly targeted measures. Large companies, on the other hand, continue to rely to a much greater extent on traditional media.
"The technology, media, finance and services industries are the most advanced in their use of modern digital channels," says Matt James, Global Brand President at Zenith. "And even within these sectors, brands still rely on traditional media to create broad mass awareness and reinforce brand values."
Some traditional media face tough competition
Within traditional media, print has long been in decline as online platforms have taken away readers and advertising money. Advertising revenue for printed newspapers and magazines peaked at 164 billion US dollars in 2007 and will only reach 70 billion US dollars this year. TV is now also starting to shrink, albeit not by anywhere near the same amount: 184 billion US dollars in 2018 will become 180 billion US dollars in 2021.
Other traditional media are doing better
In addition to radio, which is growing by 1% annually, out-of-home and cinema are also on the rise in the traditional media sector. Out-of-home providers are continuing to expand their digital display networks, achieving annual sales growth of 4%. Cinema, which only has a global advertising market share of 0.8%, is even growing at 12% per year, which is mainly due to a boom in the popularity of cinema in China.
Global advertising to grow by 4.6 percent in 2019, led by the USA
Zenith forecasts global advertising growth of 4.6 percent to 639 billion US dollars this year, an increase of 28 billion US dollars. At USD 13 billion, almost half of this comes from the USA, due to the very rapid growth of internet advertising. China grew by 4 billion US dollars, the UK and India by 1 billion US dollars each.
"The time when internet advertising reaches the 50 percent mark of global advertising expenditure is getting closer and closer. This is the first time it has appeared in our forecasts," says Jonathan Barnard, Head of Forecasting at Zenith. "However, 2021 will be the first year of single-digit growth in internet advertising since 2001 - the year the dotcom bubble burst."

The sales figures are public data on the one hand and estimates on the other. The estimates are marked with a *, respectively the estimate of the sales split for Digitec.ch and Galaxus.ch with a (*). All data are verified by Carpathia and by an expert group coordinated by Carpathia.
The sales figures represent pure online sales in millions of Swiss francs for the 2018 financial year. The top 30 B2C include marketplaces with own sales including marketplace share (e.g. Amazon), but without income from commissions. The listed revenue corresponds to net revenue, i.e., the revenue from goods excluding VAT and adjusted for returns and cancellations.
Top 5 B2C combine almost one-third of revenues
With a total of CHF 5,782 million, the top 30 B2C online retailers together generated 58 percent of the total online retail sales of CHF 9.9 billion generated in Switzerland in 2018.
Of the top 30 B2C online retailers, the top 5 alone account for 31 percent, almost a third of sales. Looking at the top 10, the figure is already 41 percent.
"At least", one can say, the dominance is still distributed among 5 big players, in contrast to the neighboring countries. In Germany and Austria, Amazon has a striking lead and thus much more dominance. Nevertheless, the concentration of power continues to increase in Swiss online retailing.

Prize for Film Journalism to be awarded for the first time at the Zurich Film Festival
Going forward, the Prix Pathé—the award for film journalism—will no longer be presented as part of the Solothurn Film Festival, but rather at the Zurich Film Festival.

The Film Journalist of the Year will be awarded at the 15th Zurich Film Festival ZFF and no longer at the Solothurn Film Festival, as the festival management announced on Thursday.
The ZFF has become one of the most important platforms for film distribution in Switzerland, helping to make arthouse films known to a wide audience, Pathé Film Managing Director Loic Trocmé is quoted as saying. As over 500 journalists are accredited at the festival, the decision was made to award the prize in Zurich for the first time.
The prize, sponsored by the Pathé Switzerland cinema chain and the distribution company Pathé Films, has been honoring outstanding film reviews and essays on cinema films since 2006. It is endowed with 10,000 Swiss francs. The organizers want to strengthen film criticism as an independent journalistic form.
Film journalists can apply for the upcoming award by submitting an article on a film that was shown in a Swiss cinema between June 2018 and June 2019. A three-member jury, consisting of representatives from Pathé, ZFF and the Swiss Association of Film Journalists, will select the winner from the entries submitted. Previous winners include Antoine Duplan from Le TempsMichael Sennhauser from SRF 2 Kultur, Simone Meier from Watson and Pascal Blum from Tages-Anzeiger. (SDA/swi)
