Eight terminations at Tamedia

20 Minuten has decided to dissolve the sports editorial department it operated jointly with Tamedia and to set up its own sports department. Eight layoffs are expected at Tamedia.

Tamedia

The previously joint teams in Sports and Editorial Services are to be divided between 20 minutes and Tamedia will be split. The replacement is expected to result in around eight redundancies in German-speaking Switzerland.

Affected are primarily for 20 minutes employees of Tamedia's affiliated sports editorial department and print production. A social plan will be applied for those affected, according to a joint media release issued on Tuesday by 20 minutes and Tamedia was called.

No layoffs are currently planned in western Switzerland as a result of the adjustments, according to the statement.

Because 20 minutes wants to focus its sports reporting more strongly on its own readership, the title is setting up its own sports department in German-speaking Switzerland from January 2021. To this end, print production services previously provided by Tamedia will also be outsourced directly to 20 minutes incorporated. (SDA)

Obwalden Tourism presents its 2021 marketing program

Unusual times call for inspired and bold measures from tourism organizations. This was implied on Wednesday when Obwalden Tourism presented its 2021 marketing program at the Hotel Krone in Sarnen. Swiss cities and the population beyond the Röstigraben will be the focus of next year’s activities.

Präsentation-Marketing-Programm-OT-2021-Daniel-Scardino
Obwalden Tourism Managing Director Daniel Scardino at the presentation of the 2021 marketing activities.

Two connected halls in the Hotel Krone in Sarnen offered enough space to provide the 30 or so people who had registered for the presentation of the tourism umbrella organization's 2021 marketing activities with FOPH-compliant conditions. The audience was made up of representatives from a wide range of sectors of the regional tourism industry.

After a detailed review of the planning and activities of the past few months by Tamara Durrer, Head of Marketing, Daniel Scardino, Managing Director of Obwalden Tourism, turned the attention to the future. There, the so-called insider tip campaign, launched directly after the lockdown last summer, will be continued. The aim is to remind the Swiss population of Obwalden, make it known and establish it as a real insider tip.

"The insider tips in the Sarneraa Valley are far from exhausted," says Scardino. "And not all Swiss people associate Obwalden with attractive and relaxing vacations with a pleasantly short journey." The tourism organization wants to change this in 2021 with various measures.

Pop-up stores

"Go where our potential guests are" is the motto of the central marketing push in the coming year. Pop-up stores, each open for four to six weeks, will temporarily enrich the retail landscape in Swiss cities. The logic here: Before guests come to Obwalden, the region is presented to them in their own home town.

Obwalden Tourismus

Promotion

The presence of the pop-up stores will be accompanied by a variety of public activities - on the one hand by Obwalden Tourism directly, but also by tourism and business partners. A presence at the LUGA in spring 2021 or at the Switzerland Marathon Light is also part of the tourism organization's current planning. The Obwalden Tourism blog, social media channels and newsletter also offer additional platforms for tourism businesses.

Tapping into a new guest segment

From 2021, Obwalden Tourism will define the population of French-speaking Switzerland as a completely new target group for the first time. The basis for this will be created with the translation of the content on Obwalden-tourismus.ch. Daniel Scardino sees great potential in market development between Biel and Geneva: "Obwalden's tourism offering is even less well known in French-speaking Switzerland than in parts of German-speaking Switzerland. But even there, there is a longing for new destinations to discover within their own country. In addition to nature, I also see the culinary delights, customs and the center of Switzerland as good arguments for visiting us. And last but not least, our geographical proximity is also a plus that we can exploit," he explains.

New concept for printed matter and guest newspaper

From 2021, Obwalden Tourism's printed materials will include a year-round image brochure in each of the three languages German, French and English - as opposed to a summer and winter brochure in a combination of German and English as before.

The image brochure is supplemented by the seasonal guest newspaper Insider tip. In line with the new main target groups, the Insider tip in German and French. In terms of content, it offers a platform for stories about local protagonists.

Migros Culture Percentage awards 150,000 Swiss francs for new cultural impulses

The Migros Culture Percentage is awarding grants totaling 150,000 francs to three Swiss cultural projects. These were selected from 'a large number of primarily interdisciplinary proposals« submitted in response to the call for proposals »New Perspectives. SlashArtist,« which was published for the first time in early 2020. The Migros cultural funding program announced this in a press release.

Migros
Migros Culture Percentage is awarding around CHF 50,000 of the total CHF 150,000 to the Zurich Agency for Virtuality.

80,000 francs will go to the creators of an eight-part podcast on the question "Can artificial intelligence replace cultural creation?". The audio series accompanies the exhibition "Super - the second creation", which can be seen at the Museum of Communication in Bern from November 6.

The Zurich Agency for Virtuality is being supported with 50,000 Swiss francs to analyze virtual spaces. Together with Swiss artists and art and cultural organizations, this project will explore the relevance of virtual reality as a place of cultural reception and production.

The third project, supported with CHF 20,000, is the platform entitled "They say it is love. We say it is unaged work". Behind it is a Geneva-based collective that explores the question of how cultural creation is and should be remunerated. The aim is to increase the value of artistic work both economically and symbolically. (SDA)

Sunrise proposes Mike Fries as Chairman of the Board of Directors

Sunrise, the telecommunications company set to be acquired by UPC’s parent company, Liberty Global, has called an extraordinary general meeting for November 9. At this meeting, Liberty representatives are expected to take the reins on the board of directors. Liberty CEO Mike Fries has been nominated as the new chairman of the board.

Sunrise

The motion is to elect Mike Fries, Baptiest Coopmans, Miranda Curtis, Manuel Kohnstamm, Andrea Salvato, Marisa Drew, Thomas Meyer and Joseph Deiss as new members of the board of directors, according to a release Monday.

Miranda Curtis, Manuel Kohnstamm and Andrea Salvato are also proposed as members of the Nomination and Compensation Committee. Miranda Curtis is also to become Chair of the Nomination and Compensation Committee.

The election is, however, subject to the completion of the public takeover offer, the statement continues.

Due to the Corona crisis, the Extraordinary General Meeting would take place without the physical presence of the shareholders.

UPC owner Liberty Global had submitted the purchase offer for Sunrise in August (Werbewoche.ch reported). The American-British cable network giant is digging deep into its pockets: Sunrise shareholders are being offered 110 francs per share, a total of 5 billion francs in cash. This values Switzerland's second-largest telecommunications group at 6.8 billion francs, including debt.

Liberty holds 81.98 percent of the shares after expiry of the offer. The additional acceptance period began on Thursday. (SDA)

Swiss advertising market scratches 500 million mark

September, which is typically a very strong month for advertising, has once again emerged—despite the COVID-19 crisis—as the strongest month of the first three quarters of the year. At 494.3 million Swiss francs gross, advertising spending in September just missed the 500-million mark. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense.

After the summer slump, the curve is now pointing steeply upwards again for the first time - 135.6 million more or 37.8 percent increase compared to the previous month of August. However, the year-on-year comparison remains sobering. All media groups, with the exception of out-of-home, continue to lag well behind the previous year's figures. In view of the rising infection figures and increasing uncertainty, it remains to be seen how the market will develop. Overall, the gross value print in 2020 so far amounts to 3.5 billion. A decrease of 16.1 percent compared to the previous year.

500-Millionen-Marke
Advertising print in the overall market: development of advertising print as of September 2020 in millions of gross Swiss francs.

OOH advertising continues to gain ground

While all media groups continued to struggle with declines, some of them significant, in September compared to the previous year, out-of-home set another scent mark with a renewed year-on-year increase of 8.9 percent. Digital out-of-home in particular is posting consistently high growth rates, as it did before the Corona-related slump in April and May. Compared to September 2019, this is 42.5 percent. July and August even saw an almost doubling of advertising print. But analog out-of-home advertising also continues to grow, albeit at a lower level (September: +2.7%; August, +14.9%). Looking at the year as a whole, however, out-of-home also fails to match the advertising print of the previous year, losing 8.8 percent.

TV and print advertising again with moderate percentage losses in advertising print. TV loses 4 percent compared to 2019, print 8 percent. The general-interest, financial and business press can even increase slightly (+1.2%). However, this is driven by newspaper supplements and not advertisements in newspapers. The decline of radio is higher in September than in August (-16% to -6%). Cinema continues to be the medium most affected by the Corona crisis.

However, it can be noted positively in September that advertising print almost doubled in a month-on-month comparison and the year-on-year declines were slightly smaller (-52% to -67%). Internet advertising remains without a September push and with only a slight month-on-month increase (+2.8%).

One-third of sectors grow year-on-year

In September, seven out of 21 industries are able to increase advertising pressure year-on-year. The retail industry, which not only accounts for 3 of the top 10 advertisers but also the top product this month, recorded the highest percentage increase of around 30 percent and remains the industry with the strongest advertising print YTD.

In the monthly view, however, it is the food sector that takes pole position despite a decline compared to 2019 (-7.2%). In percentage terms, Digital & Household grows the third most (25.1%). Tobacco (+15.1%), Pharma & Health (+14.8%) as well as Initiatives & Campaigns (+13.4%) and Cosmetics & Personal Care (+12.9%) are also growing in double digits.

Content and Form and Black&Blaze interfere in the US election campaign

As part of a new campaign, Inhalt und Form and its client Black&Blaze are advocating for more peaceful calm on the American political stage.

Inhalt und Form und Black&Blaze mischen sich in den US-Wahlkampf ein

The election campaign for the American presidency is in full swing. Reason enough for the Zurich premium coffee Black&Blaze to campaign on its own behalf.

With a short clip, the Zurich-based coffee roasting company calls on people to opt for "enjoyable peace". Whether this means voting out Donald Trump or just choosing Black&Blaze coffee is in the eye of the beholder.

Black&Blaze's mini-election campaign is being run on mainstream social media channels.

"To win at Edi. you need good ideas, good stories, and good craftsmanship"

Peter Beck, president of the Swissfilm Association, speaks with m&k about the Edi.20 shortlist released on Monday and the art of decentralized award ceremonies.

Edi
Peter Beck, President of Swissfilm Association.

m&k: Peter Beck, for the first time in the 21-year history of Edi. the entries were judged by two different jury teams. Why this change?

Peter Beck: When we put out the call for entries to the competition in July, it was impossible to estimate whether or not we would be able to hold live judging in September. That's why we gave some thought to alternatives. Especially the awarding of the prizes turned out to be almost impossible to solve digitally, because it needs the discussion and the coordination between the jury members. All computational models we tested showed that the selection of the shortlist digitally allows for interesting solutions, while the awarding of prizes could not be solved satisfactorily digitally.

Why does the shortlist jury have more members than in previous years?

The idea of forming a larger jury in the style of a film academy has been around for a few years. This would be difficult to implement in a live judging, so we didn't want to do it online until now. But now was the opportunity to give it a try. In principle, the reference groups in the jury composition remained the same as always: representatives of the clients, agencies and filmmakers. For the first time, we have added the group of commissioned film producers to the shortlist.

The winners will be determined by a second jury, this live and not online. Why?

There are several reasons for splitting the jury. On the one hand, there is much to be said for having a broadly supported shortlist, on the other hand, it is precisely the determination of the awards with a democratic calculation model that is not really recommendable.
Or how do you rate a film that receives seven silver and one bronze from the jurors versus a film that receives only one gold? The jury has to make this decision together. And that is simply much more feasible live. But our new jury tool would also have allowed online judging in an emergency.

Speaking of the jury tool: The Swissfilm Association has developed software especially for online judging.

In order for the judging to be as objective and fair as possible, a number of parameters must be adhered to. Live judging ensures that the jury members have actually seen the films they are judging. Also, agreements during the process are rather difficult. With the new tool, we have found a handy solution that is not only user-friendly, but also meets our requirements for the process.

You are launching your new website on Monday - in the course of the shortlist publication. Was the previous one outdated?

Edinet.ch is perhaps the oldest still functioning website in the world. We published it back in 2001 and have only made marginal adjustments since then. The great thing about it is the archive, which provides all shortlist and winning films since the beginning in 2000. For the Edi. Competition, however, which represents the benchmark in Swiss commissioned filmmaking, this appearance was already a very big "understatement". It was time to change this.

Were there any surprises among the films submitted?

The overall level of the submitted films, in terms of craftsmanship, has been very high for several years now. As every year, there are outstanding and great productions in 2020. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the big overachievers among the films submitted. Good stories and good ideas have the greatest chance. Good craft alone is no longer enough today.

Because of the pandemic, this year's Edi. will not - as usual - be a live get-together of the best agencies, production companies and clients, but a decentralized event. How do they want to transport the atmosphere of shipbuilding into the guests' living rooms?

We didn't want to move everything to the net, but try to save what makes the Edi. Awards ceremony in addition to the competition: the personal contact and celebrating together. Since this is not possible in large groups, we motivate our guests to watch the award ceremony with their teams, customers and friends. For this, we provide the ingredients according to the motto: Real, decentralized and a bit digital.

The Edi.20 will take place on November 5, 2020 as part of a "Real-Decentral-Digital" event. The invited guests will receive one of 500 aperitif boxes and a personal Zoom login from Swissfilm Association. The show will also be live-streamed and available to all interested parties. The Edi.20 shortlist was announced on Monday (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Tablet and smartphone most popular among young Internet users

Internet use among children under 14 has remained stable in recent years: Nearly half use the Internet; the older the child, the more frequently they use the Web. They most often use a tablet or smartphone, as the NET-Metrix-Base study shows.

NET-Metrix
(Source: NET-Metrix Base Trend 2020)

For the fourth time, NET-Metrix is publishing data on the Internet use of 0- to 13-year-olds in Switzerland. As part of an online survey, around 4,000 people provided information on how the children in their household use the Internet. In the process, data was collected on around 1600 children.

The older, the more active online

Young teenagers are the most active on the web. While 93 percent of 10- to 13-year-olds are online, 13 percent of 0- to 4-year-olds are. Among kindergarten and primary school children (5- to 9-year-olds), 51 percent surf the Internet at least occasionally.

The proportion of daily Internet users also increases with age: while only 10 percent of children up to the age of 8 surf the Internet daily, 36 percent of children aged 9 to 11 and 73 percent of young people aged 12 to 13 are daily Internet users.

Streaming is high on the agenda

Streaming is the preferred activity on the web: 67 percent of young Internet users watch videos on the web (for example, on YouTube), watch TV online or listen to music online. 55 percent of web kids research information in search engines. Among 9- to 13-year-olds in particular, using search engines is their main activity on the Internet (75 percent). Online games round out the top 3: 52 percent of young Internet users enjoy playing games online.

Tablet and smartphone particularly appreciated

Among children, the tablet remains the most popular device: It is used by 52 percent of young Internet users to surf the Web. Close behind is the smartphone, which has evolved: Today, 46 percent of young Internet users use this device for surfing, compared with just 31 percent in 2016.

NET-Metrix
(Source: NET-Metrix Base Trend 2020)

The NET Metrix Base provides basic data on the number and structure of Internet users. It includes sociodemographic characteristics, information on Internet user groups, locations and frequency of Internet use, and use of various types of offerings on the Internet, etc. Since 2013, trend studies have been collected with variables on the use of mobile devices, streaming offers, social media, online shopping and online gaming.

Around 19,000 online and telephone interviews are conducted annually for the study, and around 15,000 interviews from 2019. The survey covers the resident population in Switzerland and Liechtenstein aged 14 and over in private households.

The Edi.20 shortlist has been announced

The jury has selected the shortlisted films for this year's Edi.20. The winners will be announced on November 5 during a «Real-Decentralized-Digital» event.

Edi.20

For the first time in Edi.'s 21-year history, the submissions were evaluated by two different judging panels: the Shortlist The competition took place online, and the “Best of” award was judged live. The most important evaluation criterion is the visually and aurally compelling execution of the communication brief. Screenplay, direction, cinematography, sound, and editing must form an artistic whole that does justice to the content being conveyed and faithfully fulfills the client’s brief for the production.

A winning film must demonstrate outstanding excellence in all aspects of filmmaking. A total of 51 films were shortlisted from among the submissions.

The awards ceremony will be held online

Due to the current situation, a live event cannot be held this year. The Swissfilm Association is therefore organizing the awards ceremony in a «real-decentralized-digital» format, with invited guests receiving one of 500 appetizer boxes as well as a personal Zoom login so they can join the show live. The show will also be streamed live and will be accessible to anyone interested.

For an additional push, the campaign will be accompanied by a sales campaign that will be used online, in the McDonald's app and on public transport in German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland.

In addition, the current campaign has an appearance as a perimeter ad in the online game Football Manager 2020 to reach gamers at the moment of their ravenous appetite. In this area, the Omnicom Mediagroup, together with Drop8, is proving to be a "first mover" in Switzerland. The campaign is on air until mid-November.
