WWF ahead of Greenpeace and Terre des Hommes: the top 10 Swiss NPOs on social media
More and more Swiss nonprofits are adopting a professional approach to social media management. Which Swiss nonprofits led the way in 2019 in their use of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? The communications and branding agency Consign has the answer.

The potential of social media to achieve organizational goals is well known. The power of a hashtag has been demonstrated by the women's movement with #MeToo. Organizations use social media to make themselves visible to the public, build trust and improve brand awareness. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram are increasingly being used by NPOs for fundraising and mobilizing volunteers. But how many followers do NPOs in Switzerland reach with social media?
The rating compiled by the communications and branding agency Consign for the second time since 2018 shows the ten most successful Swiss non-profit organizations with the most "followers/likes" on the channels they operate. The respective user numbers are consolidated for social media platforms in various Swiss national languages. Strikingly, the WWF is the only NPO with a presence on Facebook and Twitter in three Swiss national languages.
| Rank | NPO | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | WWF Switzerland | 70’007 | 43’442 | 8935 |
| 2 | Greenpeace Switzerland | 74’731 | 27’507 | 8089 |
| 3 | Terre des hommes | 78’606 | 22’100 | 3702 |
| 4 | Amnesty International | 51’281 | 24’732 | 3729 |
| 5 | Save the Children | 74’724 | 964 | 1143 |
| 6 | SRC | 46’650 | 4163 | 5247 |
| 7 | Public Eye | 33’914 | 11’790 | 3136 |
| 8 | Unicef Switzerland | 27’793 | 965 | 1908 |
| 9 | Paraplegic Foundation | 30’127 | 104 | |
| 10 | Swissaid | 9740 | 15’100 | 401 |
The three musketeers among Swiss NPOs are the organizations WWF Switzerland, Greenpeace Switzerland and Terre des Hommes, each with over 100,000 "followers/likes".
However, smaller NPOs are also well on their way to the top: according to analyses by Pluragraph.de, Public Eye has seen an outstanding percentage increase of almost 80% in its community. Terre des Hommes and Amnesty International have recorded almost 70 percent more "followers/likes" compared to the previous year.
A comparison with the 2018 ranking shows that Facebook is still the most popular platform for NPOs. However, the number of "followers/likes" has increased on all channels, and almost all of the organizations surveyed now have an Instagram account. The Swiss Paraplegic Foundation will also be represented on the popular image and video platform in future. However, the number of users is still low compared to Facebook. This is despite the fact that Instagram has great potential to share meaningful and emotional content with a community. With this platform, goals such as volunteer recruitment, event promotion or fundraising can be implemented even more successfully, writes Consign and advises: "If Swiss NPOs want to achieve their organizational goals, they should invest more in Instagram in the future."
