These are the reading habits of the Swiss during the Covid 19 crisis

Teads' Media Barometer shows which topics in editorial content are of interest to consumers in the current situation surrounding the coronavirus.

Teads

According to Net-Metrix data, the media platform reaches 89.7 percent of internet users in Switzerland. Teads has used this data to develop the Media Barometer. It tracks trends in content consumption in various categories and shows advertisers which topics are currently relevant to consumers.

The crisis and its far-reaching effects on work, fitness and even education have forced the Swiss population to read more online content. With the help of the Media Barometer, the most read and/or fastest growing article topics were analyzed over a 30-day time window. Each category was assigned to a specific need in the Maslow pyramid. This shows that people focus on their basic needs in times of great stress and uncertainty.

The most important results of the analysis include

  • Swiss internet users are consuming significantly more shopping, business, food and financial content online in times of COVID-19.
  • Consumers show that they are still willing to buy online. Content related to shopping, coupons and discounts increased by 87 percent.
  • The Swiss have found joy in cooking. Consumption of content relating to recipes and ingredients has risen by 81%.
  • Gardening also attracts the interest of readers and shows a traffic growth of 77 percent.
  • Interest in financial topics (+109%) and business (+89%) has increased significantly over this period.
  • Content related to cars increased by 63 percent.
  • Topics regarding society's charity are reading trends that illustrate an 81 percent increase in consumption, according to Teads.
  • TV topics have taken a back seat during the crisis, with consumption falling by 9%.
  • When it comes to entertainment, video game content is at the center of interest during quarantine with a 53% increase.

Remi Cackel, Global VP of Data at Teads says: "Teads' Media Barometer illustrates a fascinating evolution of consumer interests in the online space over this time," says Remi Cackel, Global VP of Data at Teads. "This crisis has led to changes in consumers' reading habits and behavior, as well as the devices they use."

Teads

For the reading trends analysis, Teads analyzed the data on its own global media platform in the period from March 2 to March 31, 2020. The focus was on changes in content consumption. The assignment to categories such as finance or food is based on tags that can be found on the publishers' pages.

Urgent support measures for media called for

Several media and journalism organizations have proposed emergency measures to the National Council and Council of States to counteract the decline in journalistic coverage caused by the financial situation facing the media during the COVID-19 crisis.

Medien

The proposals were submitted to the National and Council of States Commissions for Transport and Telecommunications (KVF), as announced by Impressum, Syndicom and SSM on Thursday. The proposals to the commissions consist of a package: during the crisis, newspapers and magazines are to be delivered free of charge by Swiss Post. Furthermore, the subscriptions of the information media at the news agency Keystone-SDA should be financed by the federal government.

A fund of CHF 100 million is also intended to help media outlets out of financial difficulties and to finance journalistic research. And the reserve for planning deviations from the radio and television levy, which is budgeted at CHF 34.2 million for 2020, is intended primarily to support licensed private radio and television stations and audiovisual production in their particularly difficult situation.

Virtually all editorial media are reporting unprecedented demand for editorial information, the report continues. This is reflected in record click-through numbers, as well as online subscriptions and newsstand sales of newspapers, and even direct donations to editorial offices. However, the Corona crisis has led to extreme declines in sales on the advertising market, and many media are therefore on the verge of bankruptcy.

The undersigned organizations consider it an important public interest that journalistic information be maintained for the population, all the more so in the extraordinary situation.

The following professional organizations submitted the proposals: Syndicom, Impressum, Investigativ.ch, Media Forti, Medien mit Zukunft, Medien für alle, Association romande des producteurs audiovisuels and Schweizerisches Syndikat Medienschaffender SSM. (SDA)

Hotels and parks in Africa offer online safaris due to Corona

African vacations online: parks and hotels in Kenya and South Africa are defying the coronavirus crisis and offering online safaris to travel enthusiasts. The aim is also to generate more support for animal welfare.

Online-Safaris Afrika

"We thought, how can we bring Africa to our guests who can't come here?" said Nicole Robinson, Head of Marketing at AndBeyond. The hotel group recently started streaming safaris in four different reserves in South Africa live twice a day via Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Many people have had to cancel their vacations due to the coronavirus crisis. Safari tourism in countries such as South Africa and Kenya has plummeted. Many protected areas are therefore facing financial difficulties. Around 70 percent of the income of Ol Pejeta, a game reserve in Kenya, comes from tourism, as safari guide Samuel Mbogo said. This also finances the rangers who protect against poaching. "We are concerned about the safety of these animals." Ol Pejeta also streams a live safari once a day via Instagram.

The providers also hope to generate more support for animal welfare after the coronavirus crisis. "We have an opportunity here to bring the voice of nature to the forefront so that when normal life resumes, protecting these wild areas will be a priority," said Robinson. (SDA)

Advertising to children: Swiss Pledge companies receive high marks

For the past 10 years, various companies have voluntarily committed to responsible advertising practices targeting children under the Swiss Pledge Advertising Code. Media Focus has been monitoring compliance with this voluntary commitment since the initiative began and has once again given the eleven Swiss Pledge companies high marks for 2019.

Swiss Pledge

The voluntary commitment Swiss Pledge aims to limit the company's own advertising behavior towards children under the age of 12. Only products that meet defined and scientifically developed nutritional criteria may be advertised in an explicit children's environment. Monitoring of compliance with the voluntary commitment is carried out by the independent and neutral market research company Media Focus.

Good results from Media Focus

Media Focus has been monitoring compliance with the voluntary commitment since it began in 2010. It examines TV commercials, advertising in children's magazines and on companies' brand websites, and, since last year, advertising on social media channels such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Vine. In 2019, according to Media Focus, the Swiss Pledge companies have once again
achieved with good results.

TV spots: 99% correct

During one quarter in 2019, Media Focus analyzed all TV commercials placed by Swiss Pledge companies. The spectrum included all public stations, advertising windows as well as private stations. During the study period, 27,250 TV spots were reviewed, of which 99% complied with Swiss Pledge specifications. 254 spots were not placed correctly.

TV advertising accounted for 57% of the Swiss Pledge companies' media mix in 2019. Measured against the total gross TV advertising spend of the food and beverage industry in Switzerland, this equates to 17%.

Children's magazines: 94% correct

32 print editions were audited. 94% met the Swiss Pledge specifications. Children's magazines marketed in Switzerland such as Junior, Kläx, Maky, Rataplan, Spick and Hey Volg Magazin were audited.

Brand websites: 96% correct

96% of the audited brand websites of Swiss Pledge companies met the Swiss Pledge criteria. There were 26 websites in the monitoring.

Social media: 98% correct

In the period under review, 48 social media channels were audited. With 98% compliant channels, a very good value was achieved. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat and Vine were examined. This is despite the fact that the age limit for Facebook, YouTube, Instagram & Co of 13 years is fundamentally outside Swiss Pledge's age limit of children under 12 years.

10 years of responsible advertising behavior

Six companies initiated Swiss Pledge in 2010. Since then, the number of participants has almost doubled. The following companies are now partners of Swiss Pledge: Coca-Cola, Danone, Intersnack, Kellogg, Mars, McDonalds, Nestlé, PepsiCo, Rivella, Unilever and Zweifel Pomy-Chips. They have all specifically adapted their advertising behavior towards children under 12 years of age or, in some cases, have completely dispensed with product advertising in a children's environment.

Swiss Pledge is a voluntary commitment by leading food and beverage producers and catering companies and is based on the European voluntary commitment EU Pledge. The initiative is open to other market participants who commit to complying with the minimum criteria. These include:

  • Restricted product advertising to children under 12. Only products that meet defined nutritional criteria2 may be advertised.
  • No product-specific communications to elementary school (children under 12). Unless specifically requested or approved by school administration for educational purposes.

"Advertising to children under 12" means advertising to a target audience with a minimum of 35 percent children under 12. Further information on Swiss-pledge.ch

Parship and ElitePartner launch Corona-compliant communication feature

Parship and ElitePartner are responding to stay-at-home orders and social distancing by introducing «Video Date,» which now allows users to go on virtual first dates.

ElitePartner

The coronavirus pandemic has put the whole world in an absolutely exceptional situation. In many places, people's everyday lives are determined by lockdown restrictions, and singles looking for a partner are particularly affected. With Video-Date, users of Parship and ElitePartner can get to know each other beyond messages without having to exchange private contact details. This is a feature developed at short notice for 1:1 video communication.

"Basically, you can take your time when getting to know someone online," says Parship psychologist Dania Schiftan. "But regardless of the initial restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, it's not advisable to get stuck in written form for too long, as you could create a fantasy image of the other person that a normal person can hardly fulfill. That's why I recommend communicating via audio and video after a certain period of time to find out even more about a person."

Get to know each other informally

In a recent survey, around a third of Parship and ElitePartner members said that they are now increasingly using video calls to keep in touch with friends and family. Around one in three ElitePartner members have already tried video dating via Facetime, WhatsApp & Co. A further 21 percent find it an interesting way of getting to know each other.

When asked about the general conditions of a video date, 67% are primarily interested in getting to know each other casually. However, around a quarter can also imagine having a coffee (23%) or a glass of wine/beer (29%) together. On the other hand, only very few (8% and 6% respectively) could imagine having a meal or cooking together. Most of the singles surveyed would get dressed up as if for a real date (men 60%, women 65%). Tidying up and providing an appealing backdrop is more likely to concern men (men 53%, women 39%).

Virtual date in the usual safe environment

This visual form of online communication is currently the best alternative for getting to know a potentially suitable partner for the first time: hearing the other person's voice, seeing gestures and facial expressions, gaining a first impression of the other person's personality, laughing together - all of this can also be experienced digitally. Singles continue to move within the familiar environment of their Parship or ElitePartner app. There is no need to exchange private contact details or switch to third-party platforms for video calls.

"Even if it can't completely replace a real face-to-face meeting, video dating is a good way to get to know each other without physical contact," says Martin Dobner, Senior Director International at Parship and ElitePartner.

Dania Schiftan also sees many advantages in this contact option: "The video date is an uncomplicated and safe way to get to know the other person better: observing body language and reactions to certain statements can be very revealing. This type of dating also suits singles who are shy or perhaps find it difficult to approach a date in a relaxed manner or break it off if they see that it's not right for them."

Linkedin benefits from Corona crisis

The professional networking site LinkedIn is one of the winners of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is reported by the Handelszeitung in its latest issue.

Linkedin

"The number of public interactions - i.e. comments, likes and the like - was 55 percent higher in March this year than in March 2019," explained Linkedin DACH CEO Barbara Wittmann in an interview with the Handelszeitung. "In addition, our members published 60 percent more content last month than at the same time last year."

The time spent at home was apparently also used by many for further training. The number of streamed Linkedin Learning courses increased by 50 percent compared to the weeks before the pandemic.

As for the global job market, the career network observes that the total number of new hires, which was still steadily increasing the last few months, has slightly subsided during Corona.

There are upward trends only in healthcare or retail, he said. "Trends that we are currently observing on Linkedin in China, however, give reason for confidence. Here, we are seeing rising numbers of new hires again following relaxations of the restrictions on public life," says Wittmann to the Handelszeitung.
