«Ello World» – the magic begins…

ello-world-und-jedem-anfang-wohnt-ein-zauber-inne-reto-baumgartner-mk-marketing-kommunikation
Reto Baumgartner is the owner and member of the management board of MySign AG and is primarily involved in digital branding. It's that time again. A real frenzy has broken out in the online industry, and people are flocking to sign up for the latest social network, Ello World. It’s reported to be racking up 45,000 new sign-ups per hour right now—even though the network isn’t even public yet and only invited users are allowed to join. There’s always something incredibly exciting about a new platform appearing on the social media scene. That was already the case with Google+, Path, Pinterest, and all the others. The early adopters and trendsetters in the online industry jump on it with great curiosity, try it out, tweet about it, and soon find themselves connected to the same people they’re connected to on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Every new social network also has a feature or two, usually better usability, and is simply sexier than the established platforms. In the case of Ello World, it is above all the new business model that seems attractive and in tune with the spirit of the times. Ello is ad-free and promises to remain so. In the medium term, Ello World plans to finance itself through small, paid features that can be purchased very affordably, similar to an app store. It’s an exciting and bold approach.Actually, there are quite a few reasons to support Ello World, and the new platform deserves to succeed—if only to break Facebook’s dominance. But more often than not, these new platforms eventually stall—specifically when the general public, who aren’t early adopters, is supposed to jump on board. What’s the point for a user who’s well-connected with friends, family, and business partners on Facebook to switch to a new platform where they’re more or less on their own? Without added value, there’s no reason for the general public to leave an established and well-developed network. Ello will most likely be unable to change that either—unless Facebook eventually takes itself out of the race due to its ever-increasing focus on advertisers.
