OWM survey: advertisers pause YouTube campaigns after legal safety incidents

After paedophile content appeared in numerous comments on YouTube videos in February, some advertisers publicly committed to pausing their campaigns. However, it remained unclear how high the proportion was. The German organization Werbungtreibende im Markenverband (OWM) asked its members how many had actually stopped their activities.

youtube

The results of this non-representative survey (participation rate: 30 percent of OWM members) are now available: 90 percent of survey participants run campaigns on YouTube, of which a third (35 percent) have paused their campaigns.

OWM Managing Director Joachim Schütz comments: "This figure clearly shows the high relevance of brand-safe environments and especially legal safety for advertisers. In particular, the live documentation of the tragic events in Christchurch and their millionfold dissemination have once again clearly demonstrated what a worst-case scenario of social network abuse can look like and the great difficulties platforms have in dealing with it."

Even if Google is making visible efforts to limit the damage, the OWM is calling more than ever for compliance with brand safety in the sense of legal safety and brand suitability on all social platforms following the recent events.

"Advertising environments with user-generated content must be free of fake news and extremist, discriminatory and illegal content. Offers that do not comply with legal safety must be excluded from marketing," emphasizes Christine Diener, Head of Digital at OWM.

Car show campaign: Farner unites people and cars

With its new campaign for the 2019 St. Gallen Auto Show, themed «Lighting the Way for the Next Generation,» the Farner agency has created an eye-catcher—and that’s meant quite literally.

autoshow_2019_Titelbild

Already in the eighth year the agency accompanies the Auto-Show St.Gallen. Every year, a new theme is designed, always taking into account the changing mobility trends. The fact is: "Buying a car remains an emotional experience and is based on trust in the garage owner, for which the Auto-Show St.Gallen offers the ideal platform," says the client, Tobias Zollikofer, president of the Auto-Show.

Together with its long-standing customer "Verein Neuwagenausstellung der St.Galler Garagisten", Farner St.Gallen AG launched a new motif and developed its communication measures accordingly. The focus of the content is on the mobility of the future. Cars are becoming more and more intelligent and are approaching their driver with their skills and knowledge. The driver's tasks are changing due to the many additional functions such as various assistance systems, and driving a car is becoming a new experience.

autoshow_2019_woman

With this, the Farner agency also creates the derivation to this year's subject: Because in an exaggerated sense, the cars are humanized. The flashing headlights, which were used as eyes for the shooted woman or man, stand out dramatically on the dark background in various applications: E-boards and E-panels at the St.Gallen train station surprise with the delayed flashing effect and make passers-by look twice. Through a uniform campaign construct, this surprising subject is visible at all points of contact with the addressee. Various channels were used, such as social media, mega screens, passenger TV, posters and advertisements.

The Auto Show St.Gallen will take place from Friday, March 22 to Sunday, March 24, 2019. In each case one week after the Geneva Motor Show, the latest car models are exhibited in eastern Switzerland. In 2019, the largest decentralized new car exhibition in eastern Switzerland will be held for the 27th time. Under the motto "Lights on for the next generation", twelve garages will open their doors this year and present models from over 40 brands.

Lost your card? No problem! It can be blocked with just one click in the new one app. And if you want to keep control of your spending at all times, you're in luck: In the app, spending is automatically assigned to categories such as food, mobility, clothing, etc. It's just as easy to redeem the valuable surprize points directly in the app. In addition, dynamic branding ensures that the one app always appears in the design of the stored bank.

Equipe creates a digital launch campaign

In a first step, an emotional video communicates the innovations using memorable use cases. After the first contact, the individual features are explained in detail on various channels. Finally, users are taken to an onboarding video that explains step by step how to download and set up the new one app.
Various advertising materials were created for the campaign: Teaser on the Website Viseca, social media posts, newsletters for various target groups - and of course the App Store presence has also been completely overhauled.

Flexible campaign concept

When designing the campaign, it was already taken into account that the one app is constantly being further developed. The material for promoting the app was therefore created in a modular and editable way. This means that the actors and functions can be easily replaced whenever new features are added.

Digital spring cleaning: men tidy up more than women

An ESET survey shows: Three out of four users regularly clean out their computers and smartphones.

Infografik_Fruehjahrsputz-01

In the analog world, women are more likely to spring clean; digitally, it's the men. Interestingly, the younger generation aged between 18 and 29 (65.9%) finds it much easier to get rid of things than the over-60s (44.1%). However, the survey shows that digital spring cleaning is not yet a fixed date in people's minds. Only around 38% of men and 33% of women use the beginning of the year for a major clean on their computer, smartphone and tablet. Nevertheless, users are not digital cleaning grouches or data messies: around 80% regularly clear their computers and smartphones of junk data and dusty apps. This is the result of a representative survey conducted by European IT security manufacturer ESET in the latest Digital Spring Cleaning survey.

"Fortunately, four out of five users regularly tidy up their computer and smartphone and delete unused apps," says Thomas Uhlemann, ESET Security Specialist. "Keeping your device tidy is an important element of protection against cyber criminals."

Almost 40 percent of men do a digital spring clean

Not only do more men than women do the digital spring clean, they are also the tidier ones for the rest of the year. Nine out of ten men regularly clear out their computers. Among women, however, the figure is also around 80 percent. When it comes to smartphone tidiness, both genders are almost on a par.

Analog spring cleaning is marked in red in the calendars of many households

Around 73% of women and 67% of men use the first warm rays of spring sunshine to give their homes a major clean. The younger generation between the ages of 18 and 49 find it much easier to get rid of things that have been gathering dust for more than three years than people aged 60 and over.

About the survey

ESET surveyed 1,000 men and women of different ages in March 2019 for the representative "Spring Cleaning Survey". The online survey was conducted by the market research institute Omniquest on behalf of the European IT security company.

Flurin Riedi becomes new managing director of Gstaad Saanenland Tourism

Gstaad Saanenland Tourismus (GST) has appointed an industry expert as its new Managing Director. Flurin Riedi, the former tourism director of Andermatt, will take over from Sébastien Epiney on July 1, 2019 at the latest.

Before joining GST, Flurin Riedi played a key role in shaping tourism development in various functions in the Andermatt vacation region for eight years, most recently as tourism director there for four years. David Matti, President of Gstaad Saanenland Tourismus, is delighted with the choice: "With his professional qualifications, experience and personality, Flurin Riedi is a very good fit for us in the destination and we are confident of a successful future collaboration." GST can thus bring the intensive recruitment process of recent months for the appointment of a new Managing Director to a successful and satisfactory conclusion.

In addition to his day-to-day management duties, Flurin Riedi has made a name for himself in Andermatt in the further development of tourism infrastructure and various project developments. As the local tourism manager, he was also closely involved in the development of the Swiss Alpine Resort, which is known beyond the borders of the country. Riedi, once an elite mountain biker, is looking forward to his new role in the Bernese Oberland with excitement and great anticipation. "The quality tourism practised in the destination of Gstaad and its international appeal, coupled with the offer structure based on local Swiss traditions, spur me on to work together with the tourism service providers to continue the successful and sustainable development of the destination." The tourism expert, who grew up in the canton of Uri and has particular expertise in the area of a tourist mountain destination, will be settling in the destination with his young family.

The 37-year-old will take over from Sébastien Epiney, who is leaving the destination at the end of March. Until Flurin Riedi takes up his post, the current Deputy Director Andrea Riggenbach will take over the management of GST on an interim basis.

E-commerce: Five strategies for market entry in Asia

Successful marketing in Asia? Stefan Bernauer, Director DACH at Rakuten Marketing, names five strategies that are suitable for Western companies.

asia-2

In 2030, Asia will account for 60% of global middle-class consumption. Due to the enormous number of potential customers, the region offers enormous potential for German companies. Almost as many people live in China's cities alone (300 million) as in the USA as a whole (321 million). Southeast Asia has 630 million people. "European products are very popular in Asia," explains Stefan Bernauer, Director DACH at Rakuten Marketing. "Of the Chinese alone, the largest consumer group in Asia, two thirds are interested in products from Germany and neighboring European countries."

The APAC region encompasses many countries and languages, which means that consumer needs, habits and behaviors vary greatly. In addition, each country is in a different growth phase, each of which requires a market-specific approach. "German companies should focus on Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and China," says Bernauer. "These countries offer the greatest opportunity for German companies, as a young population with rising incomes shows a strong interest in fashion, travel and luxury goods. Authenticity is very important to them when selecting products. They are also experienced in online shopping and pay particular attention to price."

Despite the country-specific requirements, there are five strategies that Western companies can use for successful marketing in Asia:

  1. Social commerce and inbound marketing: The omnipresence and simple shopping functions in WeChat make the system the central communication platform for addressing consumers in Asia, for example in China. Affiliate marketing, a method that can be set up and managed from Germany, is also widespread. Of course, it is crucial to communicate in the right language in order to create trust.
  2. Country-specific social media: Using the most important social networks in each country is an absolute must in order to drive brand awareness through word-of-mouth. In Korea, for example, these include KakaoStory, Naver and Daum. In China, Baidu and WeChat are the most important. Facebook and Google hardly have any significant reach in either country.
  3. Content and influencers: As in Europe, consumers in Asia and especially in Korea and China respond very well to relevant content and product presentations by regionally known influencers.
  4. Holidays: Singles' Day, Chinese New Year or the Australian Click Frenzy are important occasions for targeting consumers with special offers. These and other relevant shopping events should definitely be planned for special promotions.
  5. Mobile and desktop: Asia is already a mobile-first region, so special attention must be paid to mobile channels here. Nevertheless, most purchasing processes take place across devices, which is why both the mobile presence and the desktop website must function very well and in combination.

Titlis feels threatened by Lucerne's overtourism

For the first time, the Engelberg-Trübsee-Titlis (BET) mountain railways are including the concept of «overtourism» in their risk assessment. This is reported by the *Handelszeitung* in its latest issue.

titlis

In addition to the danger of glacier shrinkage, the Board of Directors "assesses the issue of overtourism and its effects as a new risk", according to the current annual report.

BET Managing Director Norbert Patt says: "You can't look at the problem of overtourism in isolation, it's a supra-regional issue. If Lucerne has a problem, then we have one too." The Titlis head of tourism receives encouragement from Philipp Lütolf, professor of economics at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and mountain railroad specialist: "Overtourism is already causing a lot of discussion in Lucerne, the center of Central Switzerland," says Lütolf. "If this escalates into a real culture of unwelcoming tourists, it could lead to tourist flows being diverted away from Lucerne and towards Interlaken, for example. An excursion mountain like the Titlis would also suffer as a result."

Although no guest quotas or price increases are planned on the Titlis, says Patt, they are working on "better distributing the number of guests throughout the year". The aim is to reduce the risk of public opinion boiling over.

The Bern Public Relations Society elects three new board members

At the general meeting of the Bern Public Relations Association (BPRG), President Cla Martin Caflisch looked back on a successful year. Twelve events, an average of 90 participants, and a balanced budget attest to the high quality of the BPRG’s work. Federica Castellano, Marla Eva Moser, and Nik Eugster were newly elected to the board.

The members of the BPRG approved all statutory business without discussion. In his review of the year, President Cla Martin Caflisch referred in particular to the great variety of BPRG events. "We go broad in terms of content, but also in depth, and we always offer events on cutting-edge topics, such as influencers or machine learning. Word has spread about what we do and how we do it," Caflisch said. This forms the basis of BPRG's success, he said. With the continuing education trips - after San Francisco and Berlin, BPRG members will travel to Switzerland's Silicon Valley Lausanne in 2019 - the BPRG has created another offering that speaks for quality and openness to the latest developments. In quantitative terms, the BPRG is thus at the top of all PR Suisse regional companies. Caflisch was also very pleased that two new partners, the Internet agency iQual and the Swiss Marketing Academy, are supporting the BPRG.

With Federica Castellano (Domicil), Marla Eva Moser (Aizu Communication) and Nik Eugster (Radio Energy and Gecko Communication) three new board members were elected. They replace Anna Bähni and Simon Schatzmann, who have resigned, and further strengthen the board. With a total of nine board members and a strategic advisory board, the BPRG is also well on its way in its anniversary year 2019.

Give us the shoe: tbd. promotes Vögele Shoes recycling program

Vögele Shoes is relaunching its recycling program. The agency tbd. developed the entire concept and created a campaign for it.

Almost 150 million tons of clothing and shoes are sold worldwide every year. After they are worn, 85 percent of them end up in landfills or are incinerated instead of being returned to the product and material cycles. This places an excessive burden on the environment and drains resources from the cycle. The burden could be reduced with broad-based recycling.

The issue of sustainability is also close to Vögele Shoes' heart. That is why the company has decided to strengthen and relaunch its recycling program in collaboration with its renowned global partner I:CO. The focus is on returning used shoes and bags to the stores in exchange for shopping vouchers.

The tbd. agency developed a consistent concept for this, from label to advertising. Starting with a recycling label for Vögele Shoes, which is used in the appropriate context instead of the brand logo. Under the motto "Every shoe tells a story. With recycling, a new one begins." the agency developed various measures for in-store application, from throw-in boxes to special labels. A modular system consisting of a headline and the box as a key visual is used for advertising.

The campaign launched last week with a promotion and will subsequently be used on social media and in various print applications.

Valora gets into business with Twint

After years of negotiations, Swiss retailer Valora is partnering with the Twint payment app.

twint_bezahlen_am_zahlterminal-t

This writes the Handelszeitung in its current issue. "We will replace our payment terminals in all retail outlets in Switzerland from summer 2019 and activate Twint on these terminals thereafter - at the end of 2019 / beginning of 2020," confirms Roger Vogt, CEO of Valora's retail business.

Initially, Twint will be accepted at more than 1000 Swiss retail outlets of Valora's K Kiosk, Press & Books and Avec formats. The 90 or so Swiss outlets of the Brezelkönig, Caffè Spettacolo and Backwerk formats are to follow at a later, as yet undetermined, date.

Vogt explains the successful outcome of years of negotiations with Twint as follows: "For Valora, it was always important that no exclusive and costly IT installations and program interfaces had to be implemented at the point of sale for a new solution." Since the payment provider is now offering a solution without the Twint beacon, this can be integrated into the new terminals.
