"Leaving Neverland": Ombudsman has to deal with fake news allegations

The two-part Jackson documentary «Leaving Neverland,» which SRF 2 aired on Saturday, has drawn criticism. The main accusation is that it is «fake news,» as Roger Blum, the ombudsman for SRG Deutschschweiz, told the media on Monday in response to inquiries.

leavingneverland

By 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon, 22 complaints had been received against the documentary and the discussion program "Club", according to Blum. "It's not a flood, it's more of a trickle, but if it continues like this, it could be a high number by the end of the 20-day period," the ombudsman wrote.

The documentary "Leaving Neverland" by Dan Reed focuses on the stories of two men, James Safechuck and Wade Robson. They report that Michael Jackson sexually abused them as children.

"Are the allegations credible?" asks SRF on its website. SRF has decided to show the four-hour documentary and is accompanying it thematically. On Saturday, the online program "Club" dealt with the topic under the title "Michael Jackson: Genius or Monster?". The program can also be seen on SRF 1 on Tuesday. (SDA)

Campaigning Summit Switzerland goes Campaigning.swiss

With 175 participants from Germany, Italy, Catalonia, England, and Switzerland, the seventh Campaigning Summit Switzerland came to a close on Friday, April 5. The next summit for changemakers of all stripes will not take place until 2021.

The five speakers included Lucero Oyarzun from the Nobel Prize-winning ICAN Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, an issue that is currently also of concern to the Federal Council. She imparted valuable know-how on how to motivate young people, a topic that is coincidentally also highly topical due to the climate strikes and was discussed intensively.

Harnaam Kaur impresses with her life story

Harnaam Kaur, the world-famous bearded lady, model and body positivity activist, set a counterpoint to digitalization and the omnipresence of algorithms with her message of changing the world by loving yourself. Knowing and loving yourself well, knowing what you want and why you are here is becoming increasingly important, not only for a fulfilling private life, but also in the world of work, according to her message - especially when algorithms are doing more and more of our work for us.

Harnaam Kaur touched the many people present with her life story and her optimism.

Chatbots and artificial intelligence

Sophie Hundertmark and Christoph Süess from Paixon worked live with the participants throughout the day to create an AI-based chatbot and demonstrated how it works on stage.

Steffen Konrath, a German pioneer in the use of artificial intelligence in marketing, used specific examples to show how artificial intelligence is used in campaigns, including in Switzerland since 2017, together with Peter Metzinger's campaigning company business campaigning GmbH.

The content marketing of the future

Peter Hogenkamp, online marketing pioneer from Switzerland, used the example of his start-up Scope Content AG to show where content marketing is heading and how automation and curating can save time so that you can concentrate on the essentials: the personal touch.

Class reunion of the changemakers

The seventh reunion of changemakers from campaigning, marketing, communication, public affairs, organizational development and business took place under the motto "Campaigning in the age of algorithms" and, as always, it was also about networking, inspiration and learning from each other. The participants were opinion leaders and lateral thinkers from a wide range of sectors in communication, marketing, change management and public affairs.

Ex-footballer Kay Voser starts an internship at Tages-Anzeiger

The Tages-Anzeiger editorial team is getting a high-profile addition: Former soccer player Kay Voser wants to become a sports journalist and is completing an internship at the Tamedia publication.

kay-voser

"I've decided to stop playing top-level football and will start an internship at the Tages-Anzeiger next week - I'm really looking forward to it," said the Aargauer, who was most recently in the USA with the Charlotte Independence club, on Sunday in the Teleclub Zoom program "Heimspiel - Der Fussball-Talk". "Writing has always been a passion for me. I first went to have a sniff and I liked it," says the 32-year-old.

Voser's career included a stint with FC Basel, with whom he was Swiss champion and played in the Champions League. He played 13 games for Premier League club FC Fulham, and played and was part of the U21 national team in Switzerland.

In terms of earnings, the neo-journalist will probably have to accept cutbacks after his financially lucrative football career: According to Youngjournalites.ch an intern at the Tages-Anzeiger receives 2000 francs per month. (hae)

Facebook algorithm serves racial and sexist bias in job and real estate ads

Facebook automatically discriminates in job and real estate ads. This is the result of a study published in advance on "arXiv" by researchers from Northeastern University, the University of Southern California and the non-profit organization.

facebook-t

Even if advertisers actually want to address a broad audience with their targeting parameters, Facebook's algorithm seems to be geared towards racist and sexist stereotypes when placing ads.

Stereotype targeting

Lumberjacks are white men, only women sit at the supermarket checkout and cab drivers belong to minorities anyway. These are classic stereotypes that Facebook's ad targeting apparently serves automatically. As the researchers report, the social network displayed ads with targeting options that were actually the same to extremely different users in tests. A job in the timber industry was suggested to 72 percent of white people, and nine out of ten were men. On the other hand, 72 percent of women were shown an ad for a checkout job in a supermarket and three quarters of black people were shown jobs in the cab industry.

This difference therefore appears to be due to the content of the ad, i.e. that the algorithm automatically shows a racial or gender bias based on text elements such as the job title or image properties. The latter is also supported by the fact that, according to the study, a housing offer is automatically shown less often to white users if the photo simply shows a family of color instead of a white family. However, the advertising budget also seems to play a role. In tests, more money resulted in a higher proportion of women in the audience reached - over 55% with a very high budget compared to under 45% with a low budget.

Undermining the will of advertisers

If Facebook's advertising algorithm really does automatically discriminate, this could ultimately lead to legal problems. Because as the magazine New York emphasizes, non-inclusive job and real estate ads are illegal in the USA. For Facebook, however, another problem may be much more immediate. "Our results reveal previously unknown mechanisms that can lead to potentially discriminatory ad delivery, even when advertisers have chosen their targeting parameters to be highly inclusive," the researchers write. If advertisers felt their interests were at risk, this could jeopardize advertising revenues. (pte)

The Sponsoring Excellence Award 2019 goes to Julius Baer

On Thursday, at the Zürcher Härterei, Sponsoring Schweiz presented its first Sponsoring Excellence Award as part of the «Big Night of Sponsorship.» Julius Bär took home the award. The jury presented the award to the team for its outstanding execution of the campaign as the title sponsor of the Julius Bär Zurich E-Prix on June 10, 2018.

abb-formel-e

Julius Baer is the winner of the first Sponsoring Excellence Award for the members of Sponsoring Switzerland. Angelo Stamera, President of Sponsoring Switzerland, is very satisfied with the premiere: "With the award in the context of the "Great Night of Sponsoring" we want to offer a platform to our members and their employees as well as to the topic of sponsoring. We succeeded excellently and are pleased to congratulate Julius Baer for the excellent campaign."

As a Global Partner of "FIA Formula E", the private bank has been investing in a megatrend that will shape our future since the inception of the all-electric racing series in 2014. The "FIA Formula E" combines motorsport with tests for innovations in technology, mobility and the development of "smart cities". Formula E's forward-looking, innovative approach is in line with Julius Baer's corporate values and its "Next Generation" philosophy. Therefore, the bank also considers the competition an ideal sponsorship platform to increase brand awareness around the globe.

In June 2018, Formula E made a stop in Zurich. As title sponsor, Julius Baer used the platform to outline its visions for the future with a broad mix of communication measures, while at the same time demonstrating the private bank's expertise.

Antje Hembd, Director Global Sponsoring & Partnerships at Julius Baer: "We are enormously pleased to receive this award for our pioneering commitment to a new sport. We are proud to have been a supporter of Formula E since the very beginning and to have helped build the racing series worldwide to what it is today. The fact that we were able to make history last year as title sponsor in our home market with the Julius Baer Zurich E-Prix was a highlight of our sponsorship and a huge success. It has been shown that the combination of future technology and competition emotions moves wide circles and that Switzerland, as an innovative research and business location, can do its best self-promotion by hosting the race. In this sense, our slogan proves true in every respect: As we invest today, so we live tomorrow."

Jury president Urs Wyss, CSO Ticketcorner, is full of praise: "The ten projects submitted offered a colorful cross-section of the Swiss sponsorship landscape, and all received consistently good ratings. However, Julius Baer's E-Prix project stood out, standing out from the well-known competitors in many respects: Innovation, conception, impact and relevance - the overall impression was simply excellent."

Valora opens the first cashierless convenience store at Zurich main station

On April 6, 2019, at 10 a.m., Valora's first cashierless convenience stores, the Avec Box and the Future Store Avec X, opened their doors at Zurich Main Station.

avec-box-valora

Access, shopping and payment are made via the Avec app. The aim is to make shopping possible even outside normal business hours. The store offers a convenience range with fresh food for on the go, groceries for daily needs and household essentials.

The Aec box is located in Zurich Main Station until April 22, 2019. It will be open from Monday to Thursday from 04:30 to 00:30 each day and from Friday 04:30 continuously until Monday 00:30. Staff will be present on site during the morning and evening rush hours, during which time they will assist customers with their shopping, restock the shelves and keep the space tidy.

The announced Avec Box at Wetzikon station is still planned for spring 2019. After that, a roll-out to other regions in Switzerland is envisaged. The new concept is designed to complement existing formats. The Avec Box is Valora's response to growing customer demand for greater autonomy and flexibility in shopping, it said in a statement. The company is currently gathering experience before rolling out the concept.

Also on April 6, 2019, the Avec X Future Store opened its doors at Zurich main station. This serves Valora as an innovation laboratory for the shopping of tomorrow. Here, customers can enjoy the latest convenience food trends on an ongoing basis. Digital shopping experiences are also being tested, such as new payment options and personalized shopping. At the start, newly developed modules will be used to enable customers to individually compose fresh tea, salad and muesli creations, for example. At the coffee and tobacco vending machines, customers receive an individual product suggestion based on the products they have purchased in the past.

According to the press release, there are no plans to roll out Avec X in other regions. Rather, the ideas tested will be further developed with the help of customer feedback and ideally integrated into its other sales formats such as Avec or K Kiosk, Valora writes. Avec X has the same opening hours as Avec Box.

In both stores, the avec app is a prerequisite for shopping, as they do not have checkouts at all. People aged 14 and over can register in the app, which is available for iOS and Android. After successful registration, the customer enters the store by scanning a QR code. Subsequently, he can scan the desired products at his own pace - or, as with the avec X, tap them later via NFC (Near Field Communication) - and add them to his personal shopping cart. Finally, payment is completed in the Avec app - without any queuing. (hae/pd)

Media platform Teads grows by 30 percent

Last year, the global media platform Teads increased its revenue by 30 percent. But it’s not just revenue that’s growing—its impact is as well: Advertisers in Switzerland are already reaching 5.2 million unique users through Teads.

The global media platform Teads has announced its business results for 2018. With sales of 365 million euros, the company grew by 30 percent year-on-year.

2018 was thus the sixth year in a row in which Teads recorded an increase in operating profit. Advertisers can reach 1.4 billion users worldwide* and 5.2 million unique users** in Switzerland every month via the Teads media platform. This corresponds to around 86 percent of Internet users in this country.

Alternative to Facebook and Youtube

"Within the industry, the call for alternative and brand-safe advertising environments besides the big platforms Facebook and YouTube is getting louder and louder. We are very pleased that both advertisers and publishers see Teads as such an alternative and are working with us.", says Pierre Chappaz, Executive Chairman at Teads.

"Our enormous reach and the new strategic collaborations we entered into in 2018 are a clear indicator that demand for online advertising in premium environments continues to grow."

Partnerships with publishers extended

Teads renewed all key partnerships with publishers last year and signed further collaborations. These include Spiegel Media, Ströer, Condé Nast, BBC, VICE, The Economist, South China Morning Post and Apple News UK.

"We offer centralized access to the top publishers worldwide, providing a unique combination of wide reach and quality for marketers"says Bertrand Quesada, CEO and Co-Founder of Teads.

Global growth

Teads hired 130 new employees worldwide in 2018 and increased its own global footprint with the strategic company locations in Hong Kong and the Netherlands. Teads is also working to establish itself as a global media platform in the Middle East and North Africa through the acquisition of MENA-based online advertising specialist Buzzeff and the opening of new branches in Dubai and Casablanca.

SDV Award 2019: This is the shorlist

The 16-member jury, headed by Thomas Engeli, has decided who will be on the "shortlist" and thus have a real chance of winning a prize at the Award Night in June 2019.

sdv-award-2018

Over 130 dialog marketing campaigns were entered in this year's Swiss Dialog Marketing Award (SDV Award) competition. Slightly fewer than last year. According to the organizers, many new entrants have livened up the competition. The works were evaluated in a first round according to efficiency and creation and then discussed individually. The discussion as to which of the successful campaigns won an award or even a trophy was intense. The somewhat smaller jury was an advantage. The SDV Award Night will take place on June 6 in Zurich. The points from the competition can be used for the creative ranking of the Advertising Week be credited.

The Zurich Film Festival gets new bosses

From 2020, the operational management of the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) will be in new hands. An artistic director has already been found, and the search for a commercial director is underway.

Christian Jungen will be the new artistic director of the ZFF. He currently heads the culture department of the NZZ on Sunday and the editorial staff of the film magazine Fame. The latter is a joint project of the NZZ on Sunday and the ZFF, the NZZ Media Group has held a majority stake in the ZFF since 2016.

Jungen holds a PhD in film studies and has worked as a film critic for 25 years. He was also president of the Swiss Association of Film Journalists from 2011 to 2017 and a member of the Zurich Film Commission from 2013 to 2018.

He will join the ZFF as early as May 2019 and strengthen the team of current artistic director Karl Spoerri. At the beginning of 2020, Spoerri then wants to hand over the reins to him, according to a ZFF statement on Thursday.

Like his colleague Nadja Schildknecht, Karl Spoerri is a founder and partner of the ZFF. Together, they have managed the film festival for 15 years; in the future, they want to focus on advisory functions and the strategic level as members of the Board of Directors.

Schildknecht is responsible for the commercial aspects of the festival, the areas of finance, event, sponsorship and marketing. She, too, would like to hand over her duties to a successor at the beginning of 2020. The search has been initiated, the statement continues. (SDA)
