"We need to move away from spreading campaigns to engaging with customers"

Peter Schäfer, Chief Strategy Officer at Wunderman Thompson Switzerland, answers our 13 questions.

13_Fragen_DSC_0057_sw

1. how has advertising changed since you started?

We need to get back to simple ideas.

2. the best testimonial ever?

For me, the best testimonial of all time is probably Henry Kissinger for The Economist. I've often thought about what I could talk about with him as a seatmate on an airplane after watching the TV commercial.

3. the best Swiss campaign of all time?

The campaign "The Power of Flowers" for Fleurop, 2007.

4. are you falling for advertising?

Yes, of course! I have a very visual memory. That's why I've always been fascinated by visuals and art direction. And there are always campaign films that simply blow me away, such as Baz Luhrmann's films for Chanel and numerous campaign films for Nike, Gucci, Levi's, Balmain and Puma. If I were a creative, I would probably prefer to be an art director.

5. what is the biggest challenge for advertising at the moment?

The difficulties of recruiting and retaining employees. Many different industries are looking for specialists with the same qualifications. Another challenge is employing staff with diverse backgrounds and a balanced gender ratio.

6 Does the classic agency model have a long-term future?

Yes, if we understand how to follow customer behavior and the consumer experience. The consumer experience is moving towards the digital world. So we need to achieve media integration. To do this, we need a fundamental change in culture - away from the distribution of campaigns and towards dialog with customers.

7 What do you think of owned media?

Both owned and shared media have become much more relevant due to their dialog qualities. Until five years ago, there was little talk of owned media in agencies.

8 Which print media do you subscribe to privately?

Some from the English-speaking world. The Economist and Vanity Fair UK are must-reads for me.

9. who was the most amusing lunch partner, and why?

I had the unique opportunity to interview Vivienne Westwood in 2002. She told me a lot about England, fashion and punk rock. This resulted in a long-standing friendship. I called her a day ago and told her that I would mention it here.

10. what do you think of influencer marketing?

Influencer marketing is positive when the brand and influencer share the same values and the influencer becomes a credible ambassador for a brand in the medium term. However, it is often noticeable that the price-performance ratio is not always quite right - which in turn is negative.

11. do you have a role model?

As a native South African, I was born in a divided country. The end of apartheid and the reconciliation that followed meant a lot to me. We have Nelson Mandela to thank for this, and he is therefore a great role model for me.

12. what would you work for free?

Animal welfare is very close to my heart. As the owner of a beagle, it always breaks my heart when I see how dogs and animals in general are mistreated in laboratories. That's why I've been working for NGOs such as the Beagle Freedom Project for years.

13. which five recordings would you take with you to a desert island?

Something between German classical music, British trip-hop, Miles Davis, Joy Division and deep house from my native Johannesburg.

More money from the fee pot to compensate for SRG's declining advertising revenues

The center-left parties are calling for more funding for the SRG because the Swiss Radio and Television Corporation's advertising revenue is declining.

srg-ssr-geld

In 2019 alone, these fell by CHF 30 million to around CHF 220 million, SRG spokesperson Edi Estermann told the NZZ on Sunday. However, the definitive figures will not be available for a few weeks. Just ten years ago, SRG was earning CHF 100 million more per year from advertising.

SRG responded to this development with cost-cutting measures, reducing 200 full-time positions by 2022 and focusing primarily on real estate, distribution and technology. For example, editorial offices are being merged, which has repeatedly caused criticism and outrage - most recently at the decided to move of the 70 news journalists from Berne to Zurich (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Various politicians from the CVP, SP, Greens and the responsible parliamentary committee have now had enough of the cost-cutting exercises. They are calling for SRG to receive more money from the revenue from the household fee to compensate for this. In 2017, the Federal Council under the leadership of then Media Minister Doris Leuthard stipulated that the SRG should not receive more than CHF 1.2 billion per year from the levy.

SRG to receive 1.5 billion

SP National Councillor Matthias Aebischer now says that the levy ceiling could be raised to 1.5 billion. CVP National Councillor Martin Candinas is also calling for an increase. Green National Councillor Michael Töngi, President of the Telecommunications Commission, believes that an increase should be considered. The SRG is very important for media diversity and the public service. Politicians who are calling for more money for the SRG point out that more money than expected was already collected with the household levy in 2019.

The Federal Office of Communications does not want to say anything about this yet. In 2017, the Federal Council decided that any surplus money would have to lead to a reduction in the levy, which currently stands at CHF 365 per year.

The FDP and SVP believe that this decision should be upheld. The SRG should set priorities and make further savings. (hae/SDA)

Digitization: Media giants see themselves at risk

More than a third of executives at global media and entertainment companies believe their companies’ survival is at risk over the next five years. As new business models emerge in the media sector, it has become essential to abandon old models and focus more on innovation, according to a study by EY.

"As with many other industries, most people in the media sector are aware that innovation is needed. However, too little is still happening here, which is mainly due to the fact that most companies are not yet under enough pressure. There is no silver bullet for adapting to digitalization. What is needed is not a quick solution that emerges in a short brainstorming session, but real room for innovation that can really deviate from the norm," explains digitalization expert Frank Eilers in an interview with the news portal Pressetext.

EY analysts interviewed more than 350 executives from global media companies for the study. Half of those surveyed are of the opinion that media companies will not be able to survive with traditional business models in the future. 28 percent want to adapt their own company to digitalization, but do not yet have a concrete plan for what measures they need to take.

Training boys important

"With the high diversity of revenue sources and business models, many don't know where to start," says John Harrison, Head of Global Media & Entertainment at EY. More than half (55 percent) of the managers surveyed want to simplify their company structure and consolidate internal departments. 56 percent see the increased availability of data as a result of digitalization as particularly important. In order to create innovations, it is important for companies to collect their own data.

According to the study, the training of young talent is a particular challenge. Because the workforce of modern companies is made up of different generations, it is particularly important for 30 percent of respondents to close the skills gap between them in order to promote innovation. (pte)

The NZZ-Archive includes besides the NZZ-newspaper volumes, microfilms, photographic negatives, special volumes, and the extensive NZZ-company archive, consisting of various correspondence, accounts and the estates of several NZZeditors-in-chief. Already in June 2016, the NZZ handed over its archive to the ZB as a perpetual deposit. For the anniversary, the NZZ a large part of its archive, namely the print editions, to the ZB as a donation. The rest of the archive, in particular the company archive, remains in the ZB as a deposit, but continues to belong to the NZZ.

"The NZZarchive is a piece of Swiss cultural heritage," says Eric Gujer, editor-in-chief of the New Zurich Newspaper. "The Central Library ensures that the holdings are stored professionally and under ideal conditions. The ZB, in turn, is adding a core element of our archive to its holdings and making the archival material accessible to a broad public and also to researchers - in analog form and, in the future, digitally as well. This represents a win-win situation for both sides."

Since the foundation of the New Zurich Newspaper on January 12, 1780, a total of 1.9 million newspaper pages were published. Thanks to a cooperation of the NZZ with the ZB and the Swiss National Library (NL), from the end of 2021 all editions of the NZZ - with the exception of the last 25 years in each case - to E-newspaperarchives.ch be available. The platform is operated by the NL.

Can I smoke you, my friend? Swissveg launches animal welfare campaign

Swissveg, the organization representing the interests of vegetarians and vegans, is launching a campaign in collaboration with Januar Designbüro and Angelink to draw attention to the exploitation of animals in the food industry.

eboard_schwein_de

The campaign presents 12 farm animals whose meat is eaten in Switzerland. Four selected farm animals - pigs, chickens, cattle and sheep - are presented in detail, as they are statistically the most frequently killed and eaten animals in Switzerland.

Farm animals are not reduced to the products made from them, but are presented as individual living beings. Animal pictures that are intended to arouse emotions, as well as deliberately provocative but informative texts, are intended to enable the viewer to build up an "emotional" relationship with the animal in a positive way.

The campaign is being launched in three languages and will run throughout Switzerland from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. The first animal, the pig, has been displayed in prominent places throughout Switzerland since the beginning of January. Open questions on the poster are intended to encourage viewers to reflect and question their animal consumption behavior.

Schaffhauser Nachrichten redesigns the first bundle

After Schaffhauser Nachrichten has revised the layout in 2018, a redesign of the content of the first federal, in which the national coverage takes place, will take place on Friday.

schaffhauser nachrichten- erster Bund

The Schaffhausen News take account of changes in media consumption: A new news double page is intended to ensure that readers are informed quickly, comprehensively and completely about the most important news. This is followed by several pages of in-depth "Politics" - without being divided into the traditional "Foreign" and "Domestic" sections: Particularly important topics are examined in more detail and dealt with more comprehensively there.

The SN want to increasingly present the significance of higher-level events and decisions for their regional readership in the future. "We want to show our subscribers, who have always been interested in the whole world, even more precisely what the big means for the small," says Robin Blanck, Editor-in-Chief of the SN. Responsible for and shaping the content of the first covenant is Sidonia Küpfer, member of the SN-Editorial Board.

The new first bundle also includes the "Money & Markets" page, which replaces the business page, and two new daily "Life & Society" pages, which provide space for topics outside politics - society, culture and science. The new first bundle is rounded off by the "Tribune," a page with mixed content, with entertainment and news from the world of the famous.

In addition to using the domestic editorial team and drawing on the services of their partners at CH Media, the SN new also with the Frankfurter General Newspaper together. A text from the wide range of the German quality newspaper is to appear every day.

With the new concept, the SN offer their readers exciting, relevant and stimulating reading every day. At the same time, regional reporting is to be further improved and enhanced with picture galleries and bonus content on the online portal. Shn.ch be linked.

KSP provides more wins with the VW Golf

For the VW Golf, set to be released in spring 2020, KSP Krieg Schlupp Partner is tapping into the world of funny fail GIFs. The result is an entertaining campaign featuring a variety of initiatives.

VW_FAILS_Mobile_Key-0-4-screenshot

"Here's where life plays" is the claim of the new VW Golf, which is more digital, connected and intelligent than its seven predecessors thanks to various innovative features.

On behalf of Amag, the lead agency took up the theme of "life" and spun it further in communicative terms. The principle: First of all, real failures that have gone viral on the Internet are shown, which are part of life. After that, reference is made to the new Golf, which is supposed to ensure significantly fewer fails and more wins.

Fail Tuesdays with Watson

In December 2019, two "Fail Tuesdays" were sponsored on Watson.ch as well as on its social media channels, and each was resolved with a feature of the new Golf - in keeping with the motto "Leave the Fails to Others."

Four videos for four features

The story of the failures is being continued by Amag itself in a national online video campaign. The focus is on the four most important features of the new Golf: Mobile Key, Voice Control, Innovision Cockpit and IQ.Light.

SMS Newsletter

Prospective buyers could sign up for an SMS or email newsletter. The six text messages sent between December and January all begin with the same question: "Do you know this?" The resolution shows how the Golf can solve these typical everyday problems.

long-rigozzi

Rigozzi is no stranger to viewers of the Neo-CH Media TV channel, as she has co-hosted the show "Bauer, Ledig, Sucht ..." on and off since 2008. "I am very excited to be able to host 'The Voice of Switzerland'! In this format, I want to experience not only the music, but also the soul, the stories and the hearts of the participants and jurors. The songs will also play an important role. I am betting on the surprise card. The already heard, the already seen will not be there. And I want young children's talent to have a chance thanks to this platform. We need strong emotions, voices that hit the heart and gut: We are looking for voices that will never be forgotten," says the Ticino native about her new job as "The Voice of Switzerland" host.

39-year-old Max Loong began his hosting career around 20 years ago on Swizz, which later became Viva Swizz. Then came his international breakthrough in 2006 with his own show on MTV Asia. With his show, the Zurich native with Malaysian roots reached 100 million households. This opened further doors for him, and he went on to host shows for various well-known TV stations in Asia, including Fox Asia for a long time. In the meantime, he was also active as an actor again and again.

Now he co-hosts the singing talent show with Rigozzi: "The team of 'The Voice of Switzerland' - starting with my co-host Christa, to the coaches, to the production team of 3+ - I couldn't imagine a better constellation. I'm really looking forward to this new adventure, you can look forward to great talents," says Loong about his new challenge.

Möbel Pfister: Head of Marketing Paul Holaschke becomes new Group CEO

Paul Holaschke, the current head of marketing and communications, will become the new CEO of Möbel Pfister. He will assume his role as CEO of the furniture retailer in early February.

Paul_Holaschke-054

Holaschke's predecessor Matthias Baumann resigned in September - officially for personal reasons. Just one month later, Möbel Pfister passed into foreign hands with its sale to the Austrian XXXLutz Group. Since then, Chief Financial Officer Ivan Bosin has been managing the furniture store on an interim basis.

Holaschke, 40, most recently headed the "Marketing Communications" department at Möbel Pfister since 2017. Prior to that, he reportedly spent ten years in various management roles at IKEA Austria and in international business projects. He holds a master's degree in business administration with a focus on marketing.

"We are pleased that the new CEO comes from our own ranks," Rudolf Obrecht, Chairman of the Board of Directors of F.G. Pfister Holding, is quoted as saying in the press release. (SDA/swi)
