Annabelle editor Helene Aecherli is reporter of the year

Annabelle editor Helene Aecherli was named Reporter of the Year last night by industry magazine Schweizer Journalist.

Annabelle

One of the reasons given for the choice was the reporter's special journalistic flair: "She has a feel for life's big and small stories and is unconventional." Helene Aecherli prefers to write about socio-political topics, especially the Middle East, gender, health and sexuality - often in combination. She is one of the few European journalists to have reported from Guantanamo, portrayed "dangerous singles" in Egypt, dealt with discrimination against employees over 50, and talked to couples therapist Esther Perel about cheating.

The award is an industry prize. A preliminary jury consisting of 39 active and former journalists nominated five people in each of eleven categories. The winners were then chosen in an online vote. Helene Aecherli won more than a quarter of the approximately 800 votes cast by the jury, which, according to "Schweizer Journalist," consisted of industry representatives and magazine subscribers.

UP Content: Tuna Productions launches full-service motion picture agency

Fast, straightforward, and creative projects—from e-boards to promotional videos—are in increasingly high demand. With UP Content, Tuna Production launched a full-service video production agency in 2020.

Tuna Production

"This is our response to the rapidly growing need for visual content," says founder Derya Tuna. UP Content is designed to produce visual content for TV, social networks, websites and events quickly and cost-effectively. The Tuna boss has noticed that customers increasingly have communication needs for which they cannot find a suitable production partner today. They have an exciting message, but don't know in what form and with which partner they can implement it.

At the same time, media consumption habits are changing in the age of digitalization. "It is becoming increasingly complex and challenging to reach the desired target groups in the media," says Tuna. It's about "being ever more focused on a wide variety of channels with tailored messages".

However, today's production structures are far too cumbersome for such tasks. It is also far too expensive to set the entire machinery of an advertising agency in motion for a short social media clip.

UP Content wants to serve this niche. It produces videos and films for all formats - be it video reports, live stories, documentaries or content for online magazines, social media channels, e-boards at train stations, in-flight screens or events. From the idea to implementation, including post-production and finishing, everything is produced in-house at UP Content. UP Content's services can also be combined with those of Tuna production. For example, if different media are to be supplied with uniformly produced content in addition to the classic TV spot.

In addition, with the founding of UP Content, the previous GmbH Tuna Production was converted into a stock corporation and strengthened with an investment in a London film production company.

Foundry for Planted: Grease the Pan, Save the Planet

For the retail launch of Planted products, Foundry developed the positioning, corporate identity, packaging, and other initiatives.

Foundry

Planted is a spin-off of ETH Zurich founded in July 2019 and has brought to market a plant-based chicken consisting only of pea protein, pea fiber, rapeseed oil and water, which is confusingly similar to classic chicken in terms of taste and consistency. The product met with widespread interest and was launched on January 13.

In a world where meat substitute products are on the leap from niche to mass product, it is important to explicitly avoid traditional cliché traps and to deliberately break with existing codes. Thus, the product should be positioned in a colorful, varied, contemporary, positive and relevant way. Instead of classic product images, the four elementary brand values of health, animal welfare, good taste, and sustainability were brought onto the packaging as central messages in a playful and at the same time to the point way. This was done in the form of rhymed sayings such as "Grease the pan. Save the planet" or "The meat grows on the bush. It tastes just like chicken". The headlines were developed in all four national languages.

The result is 16 different packages for the two product variants, pure and marinated. Not a classic product sleeve, but a platform for relevant communication that can be played with in a variety of ways.

Parallel to the market launch, Planted will also be brought to life via other touchpoints developed and designed by Foundry. A landing page with delicious recipes and a designed food truck, which has been touring Switzerland since Friday, were also realized. In addition, there are numerous social media activities.

Livesystems becomes new marketing and brokerage partner of VBZ TrafficMedia

Zurich Public Transportation (VBZ) has issued a new public call for bids for the marketing of VBZ TrafficMedia’s advertising spaces outside the VBZ service area and for the brokerage of such spaces within the VBZ service area. After evaluating the bids received, the contract for the next five years was awarded to Livesystems.

Livesystems

The advertising spaces in and on streetcars and buses operated by Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich are marketed outside the VBZ area by an external partner. VBZ TrafficMedia put this collaboration out to tender at the end of 2019. Of all the bids received, the one from Livesystems was rated the best.

Livesystems will take over the exclusive marketing of VBZ TrafficMedia's advertising offers for five years from April 1, 2020. This includes market development and active support for advertising customers outside the VBZ area. Within the VBZ area, market development will continue to be handled by VBZ TrafficMedia. Livesystems acts as an intermediary there. There is an option to extend the contract for one or a maximum of two years.

VBZ TrafficMedia is responsible for the advertising space inside and outside the streetcars and buses of Zurich's public transport company. This includes the development and further development of advertising offers and their promotion as well as active sales and customer care within the VBZ market area. This includes the city of Zurich, the Limmat Valley and parts of the Upper Glattal, Pfannenstiel and Lower Zimmerberg.

Thjnk Zurich and Ochsner Sport: Social media guerrilla action at the Ski World Cup

Thjnk Zurich and Ochsner Sport have launched the "Name Game" social media competition, which involves ski fans in sports sponsorship.

Ochsner Sport

The sports retailer has been a partner of Swiss-Ski at the Swiss races in Adelboden and Wengen for 17 years. As the main sponsor of the drivers, Ochsner Sport has been producing the driver's cap for 10 years, and it is impossible to imagine ski races without it. For the 10th anniversary of the cult cap, something special wanted to be ventured. Thus, the king placement of the logo was given to the fans.

A social media campaign was launched with the "Name Game" campaign. Users were invited to follow the Swiss athletes on Instagram. Before the races, they posted a photo of themselves and their hats on their Instagram channels. Those who liked it were automatically entered into the draw.

To find out if you had won, you had to watch the live TV broadcast of the race. At the finish line, the driver put on the cap with the winner's Instagram name printed on it and now stood like that in front of the journalists' cameras.

The promotion was advertised online and on social media, as well as in Ochsner Sports stores, and was first run at the Ski World Cup races in Adelboden and Wengen. The promotion will continue at the remaining races of the season.

Media commission calls for regulations for streaming services

In the interests of a level playing field, the Federal Media Commission (FMEK) is calling for the existing regulation to be extended to streaming services. In addition, the commission believes that journalism relevant to democracy should be supported regardless of the distribution channel.

Streaming

Digitalization is completely transforming the media industry, the public sphere and democracy, according to a report published by the EMEK on Monday. Today, media use is increasingly taking place on the Internet and via mobile devices.

Broadcasting is getting additional competition from streaming services like Netflix or Spotify. People are not using media content on the channels, websites and apps of media companies, but increasingly on platforms such as Facebook, TikTok or YouTube.

Introduce rules for streaming services

Streaming services lead to more competition and diversity, especially in the entertainment sector, but are not subject to the same regulation as broadcasting. The EMEK therefore calls for the existing regulation to be extended to streaming services in the sense of a level playing field.

In Switzerland, a revision of the film law is planned in the Federal Council's cultural message. As in the EU, streaming services are to meet a quota of 30 percent European content in the future. In addition, they are to invest four percent of their gross revenues in Swiss filmmaking. The EMEK supports these proposals.

SRG SSR also needs stable financing in the future, and its performance mandate obliges it to produce its own programs. Performance mandates should ensure that information, education and cultural programs are produced.
For Swiss broadcasters, differentiation could only be achieved with in-house productions, but these would be associated with high costs.

In addition to developing their own on-demand offerings, Swiss broadcasters could try to place their own productions on streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify. For new providers of podcasts outside of established media organizations, the steaming services would thus offer the chance to gain greater attention.

Platform dangers

Platforms offer numerous opportunities for democracy. Access to the public is becoming easier for individuals and groups, and new opportunities for information, discussion and participation are emerging. In addition, certain dangers such as so-called "filter bubbles" or "fake news" are greatly overestimated in public discourse.

However, platforms would make it more difficult to finance journalism, because advertising and usage would shift to search engines and social networks. This would lead to cost-cutting measures in editorial offices and increased concentration processes in the media. This is problematic for a direct democracy.

Support journalism financially

The EMEK therefore proposes direct support for journalism and innovation so that journalism can continue to be financed in the future. The information and criticism function of journalism must be preserved.

What is needed is direct support for journalism that supports journalism relevant to democracy, regardless of the distribution channel. To finance this direct support, a levy on the advertising revenues of platforms and television advertising windows could be considered, writes the EMEK. However, this levy would have to be earmarked for a specific purpose.

The EMEK also proposes to help the media industry cope with digitization by promoting innovation. This could support projects such as the development of modern offerings and algorithms. Indirect support for infrastructures would also be appropriate.

In addition to public funding measures, tax incentives for contributions to media and tax deductions for subscriptions to editorial products could be considered. (SDA)
