Tÿpo St. Gallen for the second time

Tÿpo St. Gallen is entering its second round. The three-day typography symposium will be held at the St. Gallen School of Design.

Numerous specialist speakers will be exploring the space between the individual letters - the white space. Emil Ruder, for example, describes the leitmotif of the upcoming Tÿpo St. Gallen as follows: "The typographic characters, printed on white paper, capture, activate and regulate light; they can only be grasped together with the unprinted. The printed value produces its countervalue, which co-determines the overall form. The unprinted is not an undefined void, but an element of the printed". The Typography Symposium will take place from September 20 to 22, 2013.

Baz discontinues Sunday edition

The Baz newspaper in Basel is discontinuing its Sunday edition. As a replacement, Baz subscribers will receive the Sunday paper every weekend starting March 3.

Following the decision to discontinue the previous seventh edition of the Basler Zeitung, the publisher had examined combination offers with other existing Sunday newspapers. Thanks to the decision in favor of a joint offer with the Sonntagszeitung, the editorial team of the Basler Zeitung can concentrate fully on the weekday newspaper editions, according to a Tamedia release on Friday. At the same time, the Basler Zeitung Medien publishing house is strengthening its economic foundation.

Subscribers to the Basler Zeitung will benefit from up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of politics, society, culture, travel and sports on the seventh day of the week with the Sonntagszeitung, the statement added. The publishers of the Basler Zeitung and the Sonntagszeitung would thus strengthen the attractiveness of the Basler Zeitung as a daily newspaper and the reach of the Sonntagszeitung in the Basel economic area. In addition to the Alpha, the Sonntagszeitung will also be accompanied in the Basel region by the Basler Zeitung's "Arbeit & Stellen" jobs supplement. Subscribers who do not wish to receive the Sonntagszeitung could withdraw from the offer.

Wemf: Radio 105 appeals to hedonists

Free newspapers and certain private radio and television stations are particularly popular among active, extroverted hedonists. These findings are based on data from the MA Strategy Radar 2012. The study was published on Thursday.

Active, extraverted personalities with a pronounced brand awareness and a penchant for hedonism read free print media such as 20 Minuten Friday, Blick am Abend and 20 Minuten more often than average. Among paid magazines, Automobil Revue and Annabelle appeal to them the most. The national private radio station Radio 105 is extremely popular with this marketing-relevant target group, followed by Radio Energy Zurich and Radio Energy Bern. Public radio stations, on the other hand, reach them only below average.

Comedy Central ahead of MTV

Active, extraverted personalities who are characterized by a strong brand awareness and hedonistic character traits enjoy watching Comedy Central more than average. But the TV channels MTV, ProSieben and Nickelodeon are also very popular with this target group.

Journalists use social media every day

Most journalists in German-speaking countries use social media in their daily work. This is the result of a survey by the PR agency network Ecco. The most widespread use of social media as a research tool is in Austria, the least in Switzerland.

The PR agency network Ecco, which is present in 40 countries worldwide, conducted a broad survey among media professionals in German-speaking countries on the use of social media. More than 700 journalists took part. They use social media to assess public opinion, follow postings by opinion leaders in politics, business and society, conduct quick and background research and involve their recipients in the research work by means of crowdsourcing.

Journalists use Facebook and Twitter most frequently, with the Swiss relying particularly heavily on Facebook and the Austrians on Twitter. In all three countries, blogs, Xing, LinkedIn, YouTube and Google+ are also regularly used for research. Around 60 percent of respondents want to rely more heavily on social media for their research in the future.

Change of staff at Real Estate Business

At the end of the year, Rolf Breiner, the long-time editor-in-chief of *Immobilien Business*, will retire. Effective January 1, 2013, Birgitt Wüst will assume editorial responsibility for all of the publisher’s online and offline publications.

The magazine will continue to be published monthly, with the exception of two double issues in January / December and July / August. Furthermore, the magazine will appear in this form for the first time at the beginning of February 2013 in a new layout and with a revised editorial concept, which is to be geared even more strongly to the current real estate markets by Birgitt Wüst, certified expert for real estate valuation (DIA) and business journalist.

Google and Belgian newspaper publishers: agreement

Google has signed a far-reaching cooperation agreement with Belgian newspapers. Thierry Geerts, the head of Google in Belgium, announced this in a blog post.

Google undertakes to advertise its services in the media of publishers who are members of the rights management company Copiepresse. Copiepresse represents the interests of French-language print media in Belgium.

In return, the publishers want to use Google advertising services such as Adwords to attract new readers and increase their reach. As part of the agreement, Google also wants to help publishers generate additional sales revenue through subscriptions or paywalls. With services such as YouTube or the Hangout video conferencing solution, Google will support publishers in intensifying contact with their readers.

The agreement ends years of bitter dispute between leading daily newspapers in Belgium and Google over the use of text snippets and preview images on services such as Google News. The publishers had sued in 2006 for copyright infringements by Google News and won. Google also lost an appeal in 2011 and temporarily removed all links to the newspaper pages from its index. After the Copiepresse publishers gave assurances that they would no longer demand fines for copyright infringements, the media were reinstated in the search index. (SDA)

IGEM Insiderlunch: Cinema Advertising 2013

Starting in 2013, movie theater advertising in Switzerland will be offered by two different marketing agencies: Publicitas Cinecom and Werbeweischer. At an IGEM insider lunch, they presented their offerings and demonstrated that competition stimulates business.

Christian Wittmer, Managing Director of Publicitas Cinecom made it clear in his presentation, first of all, that his company still has the monopoly in both French and Italian-speaking Switzerland. In German-speaking Switzerland, it has a 62 percent share in terms of visitor numbers in 2011. From 2013, the offer structure will be completely new. It will be possible to book either individual films or genres or, as before, individual regions, grouped into pools. The previous, seasonally graduated prices will be replaced by a uniform CPM of CHF 12 for booking pools and CHF 13.20 for booking individual cinemas (film or genre). However, this CPM is not based on the specific visitor numbers of the booked offer but on an average of the last three years. This is to compensate for seasonal fluctuations. However, billing is then based on the actual number of visitors. If this is lower than forecast, the customer receives a corresponding discount; if it is higher, he can be happy. Because there is no subsequent charge.

In the local market, Publicitas Cinecom can only book rooms, cinema locations, cities or regions. In contrast to the national advertising market, bookings are not made per week but per month and according to the previous pricing system. The importance of local business is also underlined by the fact that it accounts for half of Publicitas Cinecom's sales. However, it remains unclear whether this is due to the strength of the local business or the weakness of the national business.

In any case, Nils Schilling from Werbeweischer Schweiz is convinced that there is much more to be gained from the national advertising market. It states its visitor market share as 54 percent in the five largest conurbations in German-speaking Switzerland. The new provider attaches great importance to planning according to content environments and specific target groups. In Germany, where this system was introduced a few years ago under the term Cinema reloaded, around three quarters of sales are now generated on this basis.

The basis of Werbeweischer's offering are the Kitag cinemas, which are only represented in German-speaking Switzerland. However, other cinemas such as Kiwi Cinemas, Cinewil and, most recently, cinemas in Aarau and Biel are being added on an ongoing basis. In contrast to Publicitas Cinecom, WerbeWeischer charges according to actual admissions. For 1000 visitors, a minimum of 11.50 francs is paid. Through daily monitoring of visitor numbers, each campaign is continuously optimized so that the agreed contact numbers are actually achieved. Thanks to information about the owners of the cinecards, a large online pool of respondents and, if necessary, empirical values from Germany, WerbeWeischer knows the socio-demographics of the visitors to a particular film.
