Closure of Ziegler printing plant costs 73 jobs

Tamedia is closing the Ziegler printing plant in Winterthur at the end of 2015. Among other publications, *Schweizer Familie* and *Weltwoche* are printed there. Commercial printing operations will be discontinued, and the digital and sheetfed offset printing operations will be sold. 73 employees will lose their jobs.

When Tamedia took over Ziegler Druck in January 2014, it was already known that the printing company's situation was extremely difficult, Tamedia announced on Thursday. In recent months, Tamedia has run through various scenarios, said company spokesperson Christoph Zimmer when asked by the SDA news agency. However, even the relocation of suitable printing orders for Tamedia magazines was not able to sustainably improve the earnings situation. For example, the lifestyle publication Encore and individual brochures were now printed in Winterthur. For several years now, Schweizer Familie has been produced at Ziegler Druck, while Landbote has been produced at the Tamedia printing center in Zurich.

However, Ziegler Druck mainly had third-party customers, including Weltwoche. At the end of the year, orders were lost once again and the cost pressure increased further. In addition, some of the machinery would have had to be replaced in the near future. According to Zimmer, Tamedia saw no other option but to close the company.

Tamedia plans to discontinue the printing of magazines, advertising supplements and brochures, known as commercial printing, at the end of 2015. The digital printing business will be sold to Stämpfli, headquartered in Bern and with a branch in Zurich, as of April 1, 2015. The nine employees in this area will be retained. Stämpfli intends to combine the two digital printing plants in Bern and Winterthur at a single location in the greater Zurich area during the second half of 2015, as detailed in a press release issued on Thursday. Schellenberg Druck, based in Pfäffikon ZH, will take over sheetfed offset printing with the four employees in this area as of April 1, 2015.

Social plan drawn up last year

The discontinuation of Ziegler Druck is expected to affect 106 employees, according to the statement. Of these, 15 employees will be offered early retirement. A further 13 people will be able to continue working at Stämpfli and Schellenberg. The five apprentices will be able to complete their training either at Tamedia or with a partner. A suitable follow-up solution is being sought for a total of 73 employees. For this purpose, a job center will be set up together with a job placement agency. A social plan was already drawn up last year together with the social partners for the employees affected. In addition to the job center, this plan provides for contributions to retraining, compensation payments, a hardship fund and money for early retirement.

The decision to close the commercial web press is subject to the statutory participation rights of employees. This is stipulated by law, as Tamedia spokesperson Zimmer said. It will not be clear until the end of March how many redundancies will definitely have to be announced.

Syndicom not surprised

The Syndicom trade union is not surprised by Tamedia's decision, as stated in a press release on Thursday. The commercial printing plant in Winterthur was obviously a "necessary evil" that Tamedia accepted when it took over Landbote. Nevertheless, the timing of the "anti-social closure decision" is completely absurd. Due to the imminent closure of the NZZ print shop, around 200 print shop employees will be looking for a new job in the coming months. Their chances of finding a new job are not great.

The NZZ Media Group is already closing its printing plant in Schlieren ZH in the middle of the year (Werbewoche.ch reported). A maximum of 125 of the 184 jobs are affected. According to NZZ, replacement investments in the double-digit millions would have been necessary for the printing center in Schlieren. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung and NZZ am Sonntag will in future be printed at Tamedia's Zurich printing center. (SDA)

Union warns of nonstop availability

Working from home, new communication tools, networking: The digital revolution is opening up new opportunities for companies and employees—but it also carries risks. Syndicom warns of a growing blurring of the line between work time and personal time.

"Constant availability is a prerequisite in many places," said Giorgio Pardini, Head of Telecommunications and IT at Syndicom, speaking to the media in Bern on Thursday. This also has consequences for health: "Working around the clock is very stressful and makes employees ill." The union bases its findings on a representative survey of employees in the telecoms sector in Switzerland. Around 3,500 employees from Swisscom, Orange, Sunrise and UPC Cablecom took part between spring and fall 2014. According to the media and communications union, the results are alarming: "Many employees in the industry are suffering from stress, time pressure and staff shortages," said Pardini. The phenomenon is not new, but the risks of rapid technological change have not yet been limited.

Clearer rules required

"Employees are often working more, putting in a 45-hour week instead of a 40-hour week," said Pardini. One consequence of this is that the number of burn-out cases continues to rise. This should not be allowed to happen. "We must curb the dissolution of work boundaries." At the same time, the employee representative does not deny that the new possibilities of flexible working also bring opportunities. "Many people want to work from home, and that's not a bad thing," said Pardini. However, he emphasized that clearer rules are needed. The union recommends various measures: more staff to cover the volume of work; more co-determination rights for employees; more recovery time or a reduction in the maximum weekly working hours. In addition, Syndicom proposes technical barriers for business e-mails outside of working hours.

The implementation of the recommendations is realistic, said Pardini. "The companies were involved in the study; they also have an interest in healthy, productive employees." The results of the study will now be used for social dialog.

Opportunities outweigh risks

Swisscom, whose employees also took part in the survey, said in a statement that it was "already in close contact with the social partners". Nevertheless, the experience and feedback showed that the opportunities of modern forms of work outweigh the risks. The job satisfaction of its employees has increased over the past two years, Swisscom wrote. Working from home, part-time work, job sharing, sabbaticals and buying vacations enable employees to balance work and family life. At the same time, modern forms of work are a major challenge. The company relies on employees taking personal responsibility. "We certainly don't expect them to work in their free time or to be available around the clock." (SDA)

The Best of Swiss Web jury of experts reviewed and evaluated 517 project entries in eleven categories. Due to the particularly large number of entries, the jury even had to be expanded this year. On February 27, the readers' vote by the subscribers of the Netzticker and the newsletter Westschweizer ICTjournal starts. The winner of the coveted buoys will be announced at the Award Night on March 26, 2015 at the Kongresshaus Zurich.

Advertising market starts with minus in January

Advertising spending in January 2015 started off with a 1.9 percent decline compared with the same month a year earlier. At the start of the year, advertising spending totaled 322.8 million Swiss francs (gross).

14 of the 23 sectors were more restrained in their advertising print spending than in the previous year. However, the retail trade (33.5 million, +54.7 percent), leisure, catering and tourism (32.9 million, +28.1 percent), pharmaceuticals and healthcare (22 million, +18.0 percent) and finance (18.3 million, +27.6 percent) sectors have stepped up their advertising efforts.

Tourism industry increases advertising pressure

The leisure, hospitality, tourism sector invested 32.9 million Swiss francs in advertising at the start of the year, an increase of a proud 28.1 percent on the same month last year. At the forefront in January is the provider Trivago, which is fully focused on the TV medium with its advertising spend (+276 percent compared to the same month last year) and appears to be expanding reach. Among the Top 15 and with a clear plus in advertising pressure show themselves among other things the offerers Kuoni journeys (+702 per cent), eBookers (+1532 per cent) and Switzerland tourism (+485 per cent). Valais Tourism is also particularly keen on advertising: with an advertising increase of 71.3 percent, the provider even lands in 14th place in the advertising ranking. Valais sends its regards.

Furnishings: more advertising for more coziness at home

What to do when it's cold and gray outside? Exactly: Stay inside and make your own four walls cozy. Although the construction, industry and furnishings sector only recorded minimal growth of 0.1 percent year-on-year, the furnishings product group, viewed individually, advertised almost 11 million gross Swiss francs in January, representing an increase of around 5 percent. The top 5 advertisers in the sector in January include IKEA, Möbel Pfister, Toptip, Möbel Markt Dogern and Home24. The most advertised products in the furnishings product group include IKEA bathroom furniture, Toptip furnishings, Pfister furnishings, Home24 as well as Elbau kitchens.

Armed for the flu epidemic

Anyone who can't manage to ward off the flu or the common cold at least knows what they can get at the pharmacy. The pharmaceutical industry advertised a whopping 22 million advertising francs in January, an increase of 18 percent over the same month last year. For medicaments against sore throat, cold, flu, cough, stomach/intestine and cold were invested around 10 million advertising pressure francs. The share for sore throat, cold and flu remedies is around 4.8 million advertising print francs. The most advertised products include the well-known names such as Mebucaine F lozenges, Neo Citran, A.Vogel Echinaforce Resistance tablets, Strepsils Dolo lozenges and Pretuval - everything from prevention to treatment.

Last but not least: smartphone slap

Annoyed by the flood of smartphones at live concerts? An invention by Ramones drummer Marky Ramone finally offers a solution.

Anyone who last went to a concert years ago and is finally attending one again today might think they're watching the wrong movie. Audience behavior has changed fundamentally over the last decade: Whereas people used to surrender to the moment, nowadays many visitors want to capture the moment for themselves and posterity in sound and vision. The result: countless blurred recordings of the same concert on YouTube, but large sections of the audience who are primarily concerned with ensuring that the recording is not blurred.

Image: Keystone

Unbenannt-15_30

This development not only disturbs the part of the audience that misses the exuberant atmosphere, but above all the musicians themselves. They are degraded to subjects who perform not for a particularly beautiful live experience, but for a particularly beautiful movie. Singer Kate Bush asks the audienceto leave their smartphones in their pockets: "I want to have contact with you as an audience, not with your iPhones, iPads or cameras". Lenny Kravitz also complainsThe "technology stuff" makes it more difficult for people to be in the here and now. Elton John described the development to the Time Magazine as "sick": "I always want to shout to them from the stage: Put that thing down and just listen. Experience the artist directly and not through some damn machine."

Marky Ramone's solution involves far less communication: The smartphone clap made from a seven-inch and a drumstick is used to make short work of filming spectators. Rock 'n' roll! (hae)
