The animal world celebrates its 125th anniversary

*Tierwelt* is turning 125. Switzerland’s most popular and best-known weekly magazine for animals and nature is celebrating this anniversary with a variety of events and activities throughout the year.

The very first issue of Tierwelt was published on June 15, 1891. The idea of a group of small animal breeders and animal lovers around the Aarau publisher J. J. Spühler was to cover topics from the entire field of zoology with this new journal - from small animal breeding to zoo animal husbandry and nature conservation. After a turbulent first few years, Tierwelt was taken over by the Swiss Ornithological Society (SOG) in 1902, which later became its current owner, the Association of Swiss Small Animal Breeders "Kleintiere Schweiz".

Over the years, Tierwelt has grown to an unprecedented extent, according to a press release. Today, with a paid circulation of over 68,000 copies, it is one of the heavyweights in the Swiss magazine market. Under the motto "More reading fun for the whole family", it encourages over 270,000 young and old animal and nature lovers to read it every week. The range of topics is broader than ever before, without "Tierwelt" having deviated from the idea of its founders: "Tierwelt" cat and dog owners, horse riders, farmers, gardeners, bird watchers and passionate hikers all get their money's worth.

For decades, Tierwelt has also offered what is probably the largest and most iconic advertising market in the Swiss print media sector. Every week, well over 1000 new listings can be found here: from Labrador puppies, cars and forklift trucks to vacation homes in Tuscany. This small ads market also dates back to the founding period almost 125 years ago: hatching eggs, bird food, ram rabbits and Berhardine dogs were advertised for sale in the very first issue of "Tierwelt".

To celebrate the anniversary, "Kleintiere Schweiz" and its publishing partner Zofinger Tagblatt are running various campaigns and activities throughout the year. For example, readers of Tierwelt will benefit from special offers at preferential prices every two weeks. There are attractive prizes to be won in a monthly quiz - the main prize in the final draw is a car. The highlight of the anniversary year will be a big party for invited guests on June 10, 2016, and a special edition of Tierwelt will be published on June 16, 2016.

Last but not least: Dog misery

A dog meat festival in southern China is set to be shut down—with help from celebrities and a campaign that avoids using shocking images.

And shocking images are truly a dime a dozen. If you don't believe it, you can google "Yulin Festival" and get an overview. Incidentally, the "We eat animals too" faction can do the same. Or the "I've also tried dog, it tastes like a mixture of rabbit and chicken" faction.

Ricky Gervais is someone who no longer wants to leave the 10,000 dogs that are kidnapped every year - many of them with collars - to their perverse fate. The Brit is known from the brilliant, award-winning BBC series "The Office" and "Extras" - as the lead actor and scriptwriter. Gervais is - depending on his sense of humor - endlessly funny and now takes care of less funny things. Incidentally, he has already done so with anti-fur engagements, Dog meat in Thailand and bullfights. Now Supports he launched a new Petition (and Fundraising) of the organization Humane Society International (HSI). Its aim is to persuade the Chinese authorities to put an end to the "dog festival" in Guangxi, an autonomous region in the south of the People's Republic. Incidentally, the majority of the Chinese population rejects the Yulin Festival.

The petition is now also being supported by advertising. The Canadian agency Grassriots has produced a commercial for HSI that manages without shock images but is still shocking. And it gives the song "The Doggie in the Window", made famous by Patti Page in 1953, an unexpectedly bitter aftertaste. (hae)

End of an era: Raab quits

Stefan Raab has decided to end his television career at the end of 2015, even though Prosieben offered him a contract extension lasting several years.

The resignation announced on Wednesday evening marks the end of a long and successful career in the German television landscape. From 1993 to 1998, the passionate musician and songwriter presented the show "Vivasion" on the music and youth channel Viva and, in the meantime, the monthly program "Ma' kuckn'". In 1999, the trained butcher switched to Prosieben and launched the show "TV Total", which was initially broadcast once a week and has been shown four times a week since 2001 - until today. At the same time, the free spirit invented countless formats such as the "Wok-WM", the "Bundesvision Song Contest" and the extremely successful show "Schlag den Raab", which was sold abroad several times. Musicians such as Stefanie Heinzmann, Max Mutzke and the later Eurovision Song Contest winner Lena Meyer-Landrut emerged from his casting shows, which deliberately represented a fair antithesis to programs such as "DSDS" or "Popstars".

In a Press release Raab emphasizes the good cooperation with Prosieben: "I would like to thank my station Prosieben, which has allowed me to implement all my ideas over the past few years. We are ending our collaboration on the best possible terms". He had felt honored that Prosieben had offered him a long-term contract extension. Nevertheless, he made his decision to "hang up his TV shoes" after careful consideration and with conviction. (hae)

A recount is also planned in the canton of Lucerne

A complaint in the canton of Lucerne is also demanding that the federal vote on the Radio and TV Act (RTVA) be recounted. A voting rights complaint had already been received by the cantonal chancellery of Baselland on Tuesday.

"I can confirm that the canton of Lucerne has received a voting complaint in this matter," said Andreas Töns from the State Chancellery on Wednesday at the request of the SDA news agency. It is unclear who submitted the complaint. It is a private individual, he said. It remains to be seen what concrete effect the two voting rights complaints will have. According to the State Chancellery of Baselland, various legal issues still need to be clarified before the government council can make a decision. It is also still unclear whether the Federal Supreme Court has received any complaints regarding the outcome of the vote. The new RTVA was adopted on Sunday by an extremely narrow margin of just 0.14% or 3174 votes. In the canton of Lucerne, 502 votes tipped the scales in favor of a no vote. In the canton of Baselland, on the other hand, the result was much clearer: 45.8 percent in favor compared to 54.2 percent against; the difference was 6658 votes. (SDA)

Matter Gretener Lesch: Hiking vacations that leave their mark

With no fewer than 350 km of hiking trails, the Free Vacation Republic of Saas-Fee is an addictive outdoor paradise. That’s exactly what the latest campaign image from Matter Gretener Lesch highlights.

A happily exhausted family stretches its feet after another sunny day of hiking. In doing so, their expired shoe soles humorously make it clear that the fantastically beautiful ups and downs also have their disadvantages.

SDA Group realigns strategically

The SDA Group is setting the course for a successful future. After more than 90 years of independence, Sportinformation will be integrated into the SDA news agency effective January 1, 2016. The Board of Directors is also defining the strategy for the coming years.

In a still difficult media environment, the sda Group performed well in the 2014 financial year. The cost-cutting and efficiency-boosting program initiated back in 2012 continues to have a positive impact, as Chairman of the Board of Directors Hans Heinrich Coninx writes in the 2014 Annual Report. Total income of the sda Group increased by 2.9 percent to CHF 38.4 million. The bottom line was a consolidated profit of 565'000 francs, following a loss of 1.24 million francs in the previous period. At that time, a fine imposed by the Competition Commission had led to red figures in the income statement.

The SDA Group includes the news agency SDA, the picture agency Keystone, sports information, the financial news agency AWP, the original text service News Aktuell (Switzerland) and SDA-Informatik. The group employs a total of 300 people, 14 fewer than a year ago. The SDA general assembly in Bern on Wednesday elected Sandra Jean, director of editorial operations at the Valais daily Nouvelliste and responsible for the ESH Group's magazines, to the board of directors. She succeeds Valérie Boagno, who is stepping down from this body after four years. The other six members of the Board of Directors were re-elected. (SDA)

Havas Digital: Equip mails for Apple Watch

Havas Digital advises: Clients need to adapt their email templates for the Apple Watch. A hidden special code from the Havas Digital Unit makes this possible.

The digital arm of Havas Worldwide in Zurich has already existed for one and a half years with growing success. In addition to the standard repertoire, Havas Digital specializes in performance marketing, data-driven marketing and e-mail marketing, among other things. The new Apple Watch will also be delivered in Switzerland in the coming weeks. Two new requirements arise from this: firstly, iOS apps can be upgraded with Apple Watch-compatible content - and secondly, all existing email templates should also be adapted. Most of the existing HTML e-mail templates are not readable for the Apple Watch.

Peter Rehnke, Managing Director of Havas Digital, commented in a press release: "The Apple Watch brings with it a new challenge for email marketing. All - but really all - existing templates should be adapted so that they can be read on the new smartwatch. In future, separate content will have to be sent with every HTML email, which will only be displayed by the Apple Watch and will not be visible to all other devices. Not every email sending tool is designed for this. Businesses that rely exclusively on email marketing in particular should act quickly now. We also notice time and again that more than 50 percent of email templates are not smartphone-compatible, i.e. responsive. This is also a no-go in today's world and wastes valuable performance."

Blogger Virgine Peny launches style magazine

She knows all about savoir vivre and elegant coolness: DIY blogger Virginie Peny. In keeping with this motto, she is now launching the new style paper, which is intended to bring lifestyle trouvailles closer.

A life dedicated to fashion and the finer things in life: DIY blogger (for Annabelle and Zalando, among others) Virginie Peny, 29, was born in France and has lived in Switzerland for around three years. "I like the Swiss way of life, especially in Zurich where everything is constantly moving," says Peny.

With its newly launched Stylepaper, it wants to show stories and background information about beautiful spots and things to do in this country - away from the usual tourist guides. The Stylepaper is a new kind of customer newspaper that works within a partner network. The somewhat different style newspaper for Zurich reports quarterly via print and constantly online about pretty boutiques, online hotspots, innovative companies and DIY ideas for everyday life.

SP_print_PR

The first print copy and the new Stylepaper website with its new design and layout will be published on June 18. Peny was supported by fellow blogger Nina Pupikofer (Nimmplatz) and art director Laura Grümann, who took care of the editorial and design. The result is a platform for fashion, beauty, lifestyle, interior design and exclusive services that complements the blog of the same name.

Partnership synergies

The current issue of Stylepaper features the Zurich online store Fashionvestis.com, the online young designer store Clomes.ch, the vintage store Obbjekt in district four, the Sardinian brand Nule, which has recently become available in Switzerland, as well as the jewelry label Savannah Chic and the eyewear store Scharfmacher on Europaallee. Editorial articles will present the innovative companies and their ideas in a stylish and modern way - the French way. There will also be useful and cool DIY tips and tutorials from professional Virginie Peny. On June 29, Stylepaper will be represented at the Monday market in the Rimini Bar. The official launch party for the new Stylepaper will take place in September. By the end of the year, pop-up galleries will also be created in the Zurich area to physically present the online stores and their products, as well as a suitable online store where Stylepaper products will be available directly.

PBild_VPE_HD

Stylepaper is free for customers in the participating stores Obbjekt and Scharfmacher, as well as in the stores that distribute the brand - such as Nule and Savannah Chic. At the latter, it is also included as a supplement with online orders - as well as at Fashionvestis and Clomes.

Study examines overlap between TV and online video consumption

For the first time in Switzerland, a study by Mediacom and Stailamedia combines domestic TV and online video consumption with the aim of identifying different user types and overlaps in the use of video platforms.

This is intended to provide advertisers with a basis for increasing the efficiency of integrated TV and online video campaigns, according to a statement. The study confirms that online video platforms are attractive complementary channels to TV, as online video consumption is booming in Switzerland. A third of all respondents watch videos on the Internet every day and around half of all respondents several times a week - more often on mobile than on stationary devices. The typical online video user is more often found in the younger and middle-aged segments and thus in the group that, as the study shows, is less likely to watch TV than older people. For advertisers, therefore, the combination of online video and TV advertising means on the one hand a significant increase in reach potential and on the other hand the opportunity to tell the recipient consistent brand stories across all channels and devices and thus throughout the day.

According to the study, the use of online video is fragmented. Youtube is by far the most frequently used service, followed by the news portals 20min.ch, Bluewin.ch and Blick.ch. However, heavy YouTubers also use almost all other video offerings on Web TV platforms such as Zattoo, Wilmaa and Swisscom TV (Air) or on news and alternative video portals in parallel and just as intensively. Low YouTubers, on the other hand, prefer video content on news portals.

Within the types of TV users studied, it can be seen that people who watch TV frequently and also people who mostly frequent private TV stations have a stronger affinity for high moving image usage on online platforms. Fans of private broadcasters prefer video offerings on web TVs, broadcaster media libraries, YouTube and 20min.ch, while the SRF media library, Bluewin.ch, Tagesanzeiger.ch and Blick.ch are popular with viewers of public TV. Low TV users are best reached with video content on Youtube, the news portals and the SRF Mediathek.

"For Mediacom, this study offers real added value. Based on the combined usage data on TV and online video, we can further optimize our detailed planning and thus increase the effectiveness of moving image campaigns," says Lennart Hintz, COO Mediacom Zurich, who is very pleased with the results. The study was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2014 via Internet survey (sample size: 1997 people) and in cooperation with D.Core, research agency for media. This and many other data new to Switzerland are provided in a freely accessible evaluation.

11 hypotheses about online video

(Based on the Swiss study by MediaCom and Stailamedia on overlaps between TV and online video consumption).

  • Online video is a mass medium in Switzerland - 85 percent use it.
  • Online video is no longer the domain of young target groups; almost all age groups use video regularly.
  • Mobile usage with tablet and smartphone will overtake desktop usage by 2016 at the latest!
  • Online video usage in Switzerland is very fragmented. Only YouTube and the established Swiss media brands stand out.
  • Online video usage significantly increases the reach potential of moving image campaigns in Switzerland.
  • Heavy use of traditional TV is often accompanied by heavy use of online video.
  • Today, individual consumer segments can no longer be reached with classic TV alone.
  • Relatively few users account for a large share of total video usage.
  • The advantage of moving images only becomes usable for advertisers through technology: Targeting, frequency cap and user data enable effective campaigns in the fragmented moving image landscape.
  • Users with rather low TV consumption are increasingly using VoD portals such as Apple TV, but also the online offerings of traditional TV broadcasters such as the SRF Mediathek.
  • There is a high usage overlap among Web TV providers.

Lion Report, Day 2: Hard day, soft wine

You almost get the impression that a conclave is in session in Cannes. But they’re not looking for the head of the Catholic Church—they’re looking for the holiest of all advertising cases. Welcome to Day 2 of the Lion Report.

As is customary in such a venerable election, the bishops - pardon the pun - jury members were "locked" in dark rooms to evaluate the various submissions. Even if the beach beckons, our man in Cannes, Executive Creative Director Grischa Rubinick, perseveres.

Foto-16.06.15-08-55-48

White smoke. No, there are no winners yet. Only the steam from the coffee machine is rising. And the jury members will need coffee for the long day. Divided into groups of 5, they sift through, discuss and evaluate. There seems to be almost no end to the cases this year. 40,133 works were announced at the 62nd Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. A new record.

The program is tough. There are ten-minute breaks in the morning and afternoon. In between, there is an hour for lunch. In the evening, 159 cases were assessed in Grischa's group. That's pretty exhausting. But he enjoys it. Especially because he keeps discovering creative gems. And unlike at a conclave, he can go to the beach in the evening to enjoy a good glass of rosé.
