Republica helps Suissimage with its new website

Republica carried out the website relaunch for Suissimage, the Swiss Cooperative for Copyright in Audiovisual Works.

The relaunch focused on improving the readability of the content texts and refreshing the screen design, according to a press release. A new approach was adopted for the visual overhaul: a clear design grid forms a contrast to the macro views of the background images. At the same time, a navigation structure has been implemented that underlines the website's independent character. A glossary of technical terms has also been integrated.
The roll-out of the Website was communicatively supported by sending out a postcard designed in the same visual style as the redesigned website, drawing the attention of the addressees to the relaunch.

Bern newspaper pool dissolves - "Der Zeitungspool" founded

The Bern newspaper pool, the advertising combination of the Berner Zeitung BZ-Gesamtausgabe, the Bieler Tagblatt, the Freiburger Nachrichten and the Walliser Bote, will be discontinued at the end of 2009. The Bieler Tagblatt, Freiburger Nachrichten and Walliser Bote have already merged to form a new advertising combination.

With the dissolution of the Bern newspaper pool, the participating publishers Espace Media, W. Gassmann, Mengis Druck und Verlag and Freiburger Nachrichten are reacting to the changing market environment and the individual developments and orientations of the individual publishers, as detailed in a press release issued on Wednesday. The dissolution of the advertising combination, which was founded in 1998, is by mutual agreement between the contractual partners. All publishers continue to have good relations with each other. All other collaborations will remain in place.
"Der Zeitungspool" is intended to ensure a seamless transition for all national customers. Marketing will be handled by Gassmann Media in Biel. Module 8 of the Bern newspaper pool is very successful in the advertising industry and is often used as a docking module for the "metropool", according to a press release from Gassmann Media. The "newspaper pool" with Bieler Tagblatt, Freiburger Nachrichten and Walliser Bote not only keeps this advertising option alive, but also offers customers and agencies even more attractive prices and services. Thanks to a clear and simple rate structure, "Der Zeitungspool" will be cheaper for many relevant formats while retaining the flexible modular system. Each title can be put together with any other in any combination. "Der Zeitungspool" will come into force on January 1, 2010.

Blick: Relaunch for the 50th birthday

The new issue of *Blick* is here. In the two-section broadsheet format. The much-maligned single-section tabloid format is now a thing of the past, and sports fans can once again immerse themselves in a separate sports section. Back to the roots, in other words.

Happy Birthday is the headline on page 1, followed by a double-page spread featuring celebrities. The celebrations then continue on another full page with a photo story on the 50th birthday. An amusing review of 50 years of Blick written by Jürg Ramspeck, the long-time Blick columnist and former editor-in-chief of Weltwoche, rounds off the self-portrayal. The other topics are not spectacular, but are presented in a clean and tabloid-like manner.
The sports section has a lot to boast about thanks to the news situation. After all, the World Cup qualifying match between Switzerland and Israel is on the program today. That provides plenty of material and lots of emotion. Emotions also in ice hockey and the tearful retirement of Hermann "Herminator" Maier from skiing.
The first impression is positive. The design appears generous, the new format once again allows a tabloid-oriented design that stands out from the free newspapers. One has the feeling of having much more reading material. The reason for this is not only the generous size of the first issue, but also the new layout. The newspaper looks lively and colorful, the paper seems to be better. The next few days will show how the new concept will prove itself in real time, i.e. without many pre-produced articles.
Today's Tages Anzeiger is an example of how hard the fight for every reader is. The Tages Anzeiger devotes more than an entire page to its competitor. It neatly lists some of the tabloid's most spectacular sins since 1967. To make things appear a little more balanced, there is an interview with former Blick editor-in-chief Kari Lüond and a commentary by Constantin Seibt. So it seems that the opponent is being taken seriously again. This is actually an indirect compliment to the new Blick.

Patrick Rohr criticizes SF and his own "Arena" moderations

"Too stiff, not authentic, not spontaneous enough" - this is how ex-SF man Patrick Rohr describes his performance as "Arena" presenter in the latest editions of Tele und TV-Star.

But he also sees room for improvement here and there at his former employer SF: "I find the info formats quite similar. I would like it better if they each had their own relevant topics. But in the media, everyone is frantically looking for new aspects of the same event."

Swiss Printers discontinues gravure printing process and cuts 130 jobs

Swiss Printers will cease gravure printing at its Zofingen site at the beginning of 2011. The withdrawal from gravure printing is associated with the loss of 100 full-time positions. A further 30 jobs will be lost in administration and prepress.

Swiss Printers will withdraw from the gravure printing process at the beginning of 2011. The reason for this is pronounced overcapacity in the international market and the resulting high price pressure, according to a press release issued on Wednesday. In addition, the gravure printing systems at the Zofingen site are nearing the end of their life cycle. They will be replaced by a new, high-performance 72-page web offset system. The discontinuation of the process at the Zofingen site will result in the loss of 100 full-time positions. With the aim of reducing duplication within the Group, a further 30 jobs will be cut in the administrative areas and prepress by the beginning of 2011. The restructuring will be carried out in compliance with statutory participation and social partnership rules. A social plan is available for the employees affected.
Swissprinters is investing in sheetfed offset printing, the statement continues. A new 10-color sheet-fed offset system will be installed at the Schlieren site in 2010. The Swissprinters Group has already modernized its offset capacities in St. Gallen and Zofingen over the past two years.
With 1,100 employees, Swiss Printers is the largest group in the graphic arts industry in Switzerland. It is a subsidiary of the media companies Ringier, NZZ and Edipresse and unites four printing plants: Ringier Print Zofingen AG, Zollikofer AG St. Gallen, NZZ Fretz AG Schlieren and Imprimeries Réunies Lausanne S.A.

DAB+: Bakom wants to concentrate on safeguarding the public service

The ongoing technical development of digital radio in Switzerland presents new challenges for the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom). Rather than continuing in its current role as a policy maker, it intends to gradually shift toward the role of guardian of public service broadcasting.

DAB+ has brought two worlds together - SRG and private broadcasters, said Marcel Regnotto, Head of the Media Section at Bakom, speaking to the media in Zurich on Wednesday, according to SDA. In a kind of joint venture, they were building a network infrastructure together for the first time. However, the launch of DAB+ also represents the start of an uncertain future. For Bakom as the regulator, but also for the broadcasters, this means that they will have to rethink their current roles.
According to Regnotto, Bakom has primarily had to manage a "lack of distribution channels" - keyword: limited FM frequencies. Digital technology has turned this shortage into a surplus. In future, Bakom will withdraw from its current function as an "omnipresent designer" and concentrate on safeguarding the public service. Only a small fraction of the digital spectrum is needed for this.
The rest should be left to private providers to shape. This freedom means more freedom, but also more responsibility and risk, warned Regnotto.

Weber Harbeke Partners: "ok.-" explained on the basis of the opposite

Weber Harbeke Partners has created advertisements for Valora's own brand "ok.-" advertisements that appear in the commuter press.

The "ok.-" success story continues. Following the launch of Valora's own brand in June 2009, starting with an energy drink, many other products are now following. With advertisements in the commuter press, Weber Harbeke Partners' advertisers are now boldly demonstrating what is "ok.-" and what, by contrast, is no longer ok at all. It is no longer okay to have to go without a vitamin boost, a sweet cookie or a cold beer for reasons of cost or lack of availability.
