Swiss Post reorganizes courier and express services

Volumes in Swiss Post's courier and express business have fallen significantly in recent years. The current poor economic situation has accelerated this trend. From 1 November, the courier centers in the larger conurbations will also be merged with existing distribution bases.

This is already the case in the other regions of Switzerland. Swiss Post will determine the specific operational organization for each location by February 2010. A reduction in jobs is to be expected, as Swiss Post writes in a communiqué. The aim is therefore to quickly negotiate a social plan with the trade unions. This step will have no impact on services.
Swiss Post already merged some of its courier centers and branches with the distribution bases in 2007. On 1 November, the courier centers in Geneva, Lausanne, Berne, Basel and Zurich and the courier branches in Winterthur, Aarau and Olten will be merged with the distribution bases at these locations and dissolved as independent organizational units. Nothing will change for customers as a result of the new organizational structure, Swiss Post continues.
Today, more than 300 employees work in the courier centers and branches, most of them on a part-time basis. These employees will be transferred to the Distribution department of Post Logististics. From the time of the organizational merger on 1 November until February 2010, Swiss Post will draw up a detailed organizational and operational concept for each of the affected locations, supplemented by the experience gained during ongoing operations. The services will be integrated and the number of employees required in future will be determined on the basis of this appropriate period, the press release continues.
Swiss Post intends to negotiate a social plan with the trade unions for job reductions. The aim is to avoid redundancies wherever possible, the press release continues. Should this nevertheless occur, Swiss Post will proceed responsibly and support the affected employees in their reorientation.

Edipresse continues to insist on separate negotiations

The Western Swiss media company Edipresse had announced plans to cut about 100 jobs—50 in the printing department, 20 in production, and 30 in the editorial department. The media company continues to insist on negotiating the terms separately for employees from different departments. However, as Impressum told the SDA news agency on Thursday, it is committed to securing favorable terms for everyone.

Representatives of the management, the editorial team and the
journalists' association Impressum took part in the negotiations. Another round of negotiations on the social plan will take place today, Friday. Two meetings were held on Thursday. The conditions of those affected from the print shop and production were negotiated.
With a sit-in last Monday, trade unionists together with
employees demanded in vain that the three areas should not be discussed separately.
is negotiated.

Lowe: Fiddlesticks for Mini's 50th birthday

The Lowe agency, part of the Draftfcb/Lowe Group, was inspired by the motto of the international "What a Birthday" campaign and created a broad-based print campaign based on its model. The focus is on the two new special models. In addition, an extensive mailing was designed for the two birthday children and cinema spots were used.

The Mini brand is celebrating its anniversary with two sporty special models. The models are in line with past anniversary models. Successful professional examination for PR specialists 2009

Following this year’s professional examination for PR specialists, which was held in accordance with the new examination regulations, 85 of the 105 candidates will receive their federal certificate as «PR Specialist» at the graduation ceremony on November 20 in Thun. The SPRG Examination Commission confirmed the results of this year’s professional examination for PR specialists at its grading conference on October 12. Eighty-one percent of the participating candidates achieved the required grade point average to earn the federal professional certificate. Across all six subjects, this average is 4.37.

The professional examination was conducted for the first time in accordance with the new examination regulations, which require the MarKom certificate to be obtained beforehand. The successful 61 candidates - 61 from German-speaking Switzerland and 24 from French-speaking Switzerland - had at least two years of professional experience in the fields of public relations, advertising, marketing or journalism when they took the professional examination. They had to prove their knowledge and practical skills in the areas of conception, media relations, PR and ethics in three written and three oral examinations. With the introduction of the new examination regulations, they also had to achieve a sufficient grade of 4.0 in each of the examination sections "Production of PR media and PR measures" and "Writing and editing".
The professional examination, which was once again led by Mireille E. Saucy, was conducted by 48 experienced experts. The graduates were prepared for the exam by the training institutes SPRI, SAWI/Polycom and Academia Engiadina.
The graduation ceremony will take place on November 20 at Scherzligen Church and Schadau Castle in Thun. The names of the newly qualified PR specialists can be found at www.pr-ex.ch/PR-Fachleute (audit year 2009).

Advico Y&R invents Save Ass technology for Head

Save Ass Technology is the name of Head's latest innovation for freestyle skiers and boarders. The brand is responding to the risk of baggy-style pants slipping down because the new Head material now allows you to jump off even more explosively, the agency writes in a press release. Save Ass Technology stabilizes the position of the trousers - because they are quite simple suspenders.

Head launched the technology to combat lost free-skiing pants and bare boarders' bottoms at Freestyle.ch, the event on Zurich's Landiwiese with 47,000 visitors. The core of Head's skis and boards is made up of so-called Intellifibers, which convert mechanical impulses into electrical energy. The harder you ski, the more energy is produced. This energy is fed back to the Intellifibers, whereupon they stiffen and immediately give the ski or board more resilience. Conclusion: The new material stiffens on the kicker and you jump off more explosively.

SDA editorial team demands: No layoffs - maintain language solidarity

The media crisis is also affecting the SDA news agency. At a meeting on October 14, the editorial team discussed the immediate measures imposed by the management and the threat of further cuts.

One of the immediate measures decided upon is a job freeze. Some positions are already unfilled. In addition, salary increases are to be frozen and the deferred cost-of-living adjustment drastically reduced. The savings program was published in the SDA basic service on 16 September, the day of the Federal Council elections. Restructuring is now to bring additional savings, according to a SDA communiqué on the editorial meeting. Around 10 percent of jobs in the editorial department are at risk of being cut, resulting in mass redundancies.
According to preliminary announcements by the management, the cost-cutting program is likely to primarily affect the French-language editorial team, the press release continues. The editorial team had already made a considerable contribution to restructuring during the last recession and could not simply accept that jobs were to be cut and language solidarity abolished. It therefore passed a resolution on Wednesday evening. This demands:
No redundancies:
The planned cost-cutting measures are hitting the editorial team hard. Unreplaced departures increase the pressure, which has an impact on working conditions and therefore quality. The editorial team is aware of the crisis and is therefore prepared to forego regular step increases in accordance with the salary model and the promised cost-of-living adjustment for one year in order to preserve jobs. The editorial team is making this painful sacrifice on the condition that no redundancies are announced, the press release continues. Stagiaires should not be regarded as natural departures at the end of their contract, but should have a fair chance of continued employment.
Maintaining language solidarity:
The SDA editorial team is convinced that language solidarity in the sense of an equivalent service is an essential raison d'être for the agency, but also an unrivaled strength in the Swiss media market. The SDA mission statement postulates an equivalent basic service in all three languages at the same price. The editorial team is therefore calling on the management not to abandon language solidarity.
As an alternative, the editorial team calls on the management in its communiqué to look intensively for other alternatives to downsizing in addition to new services and customers.
SDA has been able to significantly increase its equity capital in recent years, not least thanks to the increase in productivity of the editorial team, the Editorial Board further stated in the press release on behalf of the SDA editorial team. According to the 2008 annual report, the SDA Group has accumulated profit reserves sufficient for several years of crisis. Redundancies are therefore unacceptable. If redundancies are unavoidable, they should be carried out in a socially responsible manner and without cases of hardship. The option of short-time working should be carefully examined. The Federal Supreme Court has also declared short-time working to be possible in the event of structural changes. In addition, the cost-cutting measures should not only affect the rank and file, but must be equally supported by the management.
Following the termination of the industry-wide labor agreement by the employers, the SDA management issued house rules, in particular with the argument of planning security. Now in the crisis, however, plans are being made over the heads of those affected, provoking fears. Instead, a genuine company CLA could facilitate solutions based on social partnership, bring more stability on both sides and save grueling disputes.
If the crisis in the media industry is not only due to the economic situation, but above all to structural factors, which is the reason given for the downsizing plans, then SDA and in particular its owners are obviously pursuing the wrong strategies, according to the communiqué. The SDA editorial team is therefore calling on those responsible to put an end to the age of free offerings on the Internet and also to go over the books when it comes to free newspapers. It is particularly offensive that SDA co-owners who have terminated the service are shamelessly helping themselves to SDA services on the Internet.

Contexta launches campaign for the launch of the new Bund

Since October 15, 2009, *Der Bund* has been published with a new design and in editorial cooperation with the *Tages-Anzeiger*. To mark the launch, *Der Bund*, in collaboration with the Contexta agency, launched a testimonial campaign featuring prominent figures from Bern: Alexander Tschäppät, Jaël, Christa Markwalder, Thomas Häberli, Oskar «Chrüteroski» Marti, and Bernd Schildger all declare themselves to be readers of *Der Bund*.

The new key visual is consequently the typical black "intellectual glasses", which, together with the new claim "For readers", clearly positions the Bund as a daily newspaper for a target group with high quality standards. Because those who enjoy reading will find the best entertainment and all relevant information in the Bund, the agency writes in a press release.
Around a week before the launch, online and print teasers drew attention to the campaign. The testimonial subjects are displayed on posters in the capital. They can also be found on public transport in the form of streetcar hangers and longitudinal roof panels. Cinema slides and radio spots round off the communicative appearance.
