Google enters the digital music market

Google is entering the hotly contested digital music market. To this end, the internet company has now launched a new search function for music tracks ("OneBox"), which should allow users to find their favorite music on the internet more quickly and in a more targeted manner.

Users can enter artist names, song or album titles and even individual passages of lyrics and are presented with relevant music from the cooperation partners MySpace and LaLa in the search results, which they can then listen to or buy directly.
"We receive millions of music searches every day. In the US, two of the top ten searches are for music," Google Product Manager Murali Viswanathan and Software Engineer Ganesh Ramanarayanan state on the company's official blog, according to the press release. Previously, the processing of such requests was too cumbersome and time-consuming. The new search function will make this much easier and users will be able to find the music they are looking for much more quickly. The new music search should not only lead users to their destination much more quickly, but also be a generally helpful tool for discovering new music and finding songs for which the artist or title is unknown. To this end, Google has implemented the option of searching for individual song test passages or phrases.

So far only available for US users
Google has entered into a partnership with the online music services Pandora, Imeem and Rhapsody to help users find new music. These can be found in the form of corresponding links below the "OneBox" and are intended to direct users to an extensive range of paid MP3 downloads, music videos and concert information, among other things.

So far, however, the new Google Music Search is only available to US users. Whether and when the feature will also be available in other countries is still unclear.

Edipresse: Social plan in place

Edipresse, the staff and the Impressum journalists' association agreed on a social plan for the various editorial offices on Tuesday. For example, a basis of assessment for severance payments was defined according to age, function and years of service.

According to SDA, Impressum described the redundancy plan as "correct in view of the current economic situation". The trade union Comedia, on the other hand, was skeptical: it regrets "the blatant lack of will on the part of Edipresse management to avoid redundancies". Edipresse itself emphasized in a statement that the proposed measures were more generous than required by law. Among other things, the plan includes financial benefits for those who wish to become self-employed. A fund for hardship cases is also planned. The company is also offering compensation to those who voluntarily resign or reduce their workload. Interested parties can register until Monday.
At the beginning of October, the French-speaking Swiss media company announced redundancies: 30 jobs in the editorial offices, 50 in the print shop and 20 in production. Among other publications, the newspapers Le Matin, 24 heures and Tribune de Genève are affected by the redundancies.

Pro Sieben Sat.1 plans pay-TV

The debt-ridden television group Pro Sieben Sat.1 no longer wants to rely on the sale of advertising time and is therefore planning to introduce long-term subscription fees for viewers of Pro Sieben, Sat 1, and Kabel 1.

CEO Thomas Ebeling told Handelsblatt that the company needs to become more independent of the advertising market. In many small steps, the aim is to persuade viewers to pay fees to receive the channels. For the future viability of the Group, it is extremely important to build relationships with end customers, for example via pay TV, video-on-demand or other business models. The self-imposed target is to generate 30 percent of revenues outside advertising by 2014. Last year, Pro Sieben Sat.1 generated revenues of EUR 3.1 billion, but had to accept a loss of EUR 129 million. Today, growth can no longer come from the advertising market alone. All revenue streams, including end customer subscriptions and one-off payments, must be tapped, according to Niko Steinkrauß, media expert at management consultancy Booz.
No concrete price expectations
In other European countries, viewers spend 50 to 200 euros a month on pay TV. In Germany, however, it is not possible to charge anywhere near as much, said Ebeling, without naming specific prices.
The TV manager announced that he would initially venture into pay-TV with smaller special-interest channels in order to test the market reaction. This is not imminent for the major channels such as Pro Sieben or Sat.1. "We are not ready to take this big step at the moment," said Ebeling.
The advertising market in Germany will shrink by up to 15 percent this year, although a recovery is noticeable in the current quarter, he continued. For next year, he expects a development of plus 2 to minus 5 percent. In order to make the previously free-to-air channels more attractive to viewers, new business areas are to be developed. Among other things, the company plans to set up its own television production. The company already has an exclusive contract with television producer Dick de Rijk. He previously worked for Endemol and created the successful format "Deal or no Deal", among others.

Tempobrain: With Laura and Lars at the Suisse Emex '09

At Suisse Emex ’09, Tempobrain launched a promotional campaign to draw attention to its promotional services. Lars and Laura—a pair of Tempobrain promoters—exchanged a postcard from their vacation for visitors’ business cards.

Lars and Laura approached visitors to the marketing fair from August 24 to August 26, 2009 to exchange business cards with them. "I'm going on vacation on Friday. You are going to work. Shall we swap?" was the message
on the front of the T-shirt. "Give me your business card and I'll send you a card from the vacations" on the back. Over 700 business cards from potential promotional customers were collected over three days. In a second step, the hand-written postcards from Ticino were sent to the target group. In a third step, Lars and Laura called the potential customers to arrange an appointment with our promotion manager.
Tempobrain used this campaign to communicate its range of classic promotions to the relevant target group. According to the press release, the campaign led to a lot of positive feedback, initial orders and a large number of appointments.

Yahoo also wants to launch a real-time search service

After both Google and Microsoft announced last week that they would be integrating information from Twitter and Facebook into their search engines in future, Yahoo now also wants to launch a real-time search service.

This was reported by the industry portal Tech Crunch according to the press release. Yahoo is also planning to launch a real-time search engine, but not in direct cooperation with Twitter or Facebook like its competitors. According to Tech Crunch, the company wants to work with an existing, specialized real-time search engine instead. One Riot is under discussion. Together with the real-time search provider, a new Yahoo product is to be launched on the market in the near future.
Yahoo has not yet officially confirmed the rumors about the partnership with One Riot. However, according to the report, the company admits that real-time search is an important topic for Yahoo and that various tests are currently underway to determine the extent to which such a search can be useful for users. Only after a detailed evaluation of the results will Yahoo decide whether real-time search will be integrated.

SNK: Name and brand created for rim service

The Zurich-based agency Scholtysik Niederberger Kraft (SNK) created the name and brand identity for the new wheel repair service, Felgendienst.

Expensive alloy wheels are quickly damaged when parking or during driving maneuvers with kerb contact. Repairs in a specialist workshop are expensive. The Swiss start-up Felgendienst takes care of this problem. Minor damage is repaired and the rim is then stove-enameled.
SNK is developing the overall brand identity of Felgendienst - from the definition of the brand identity, naming, logo, business stationery, vehicle labeling to the website. The agency writes in a press release that Felgendienst's market presence is as simple, clean and honest as the company sees itself.

Edipresse: Editors want to keep the number of redundancies as low as possible

The editorial staff at Edipresse, a media company based in French-speaking Switzerland, are calling on management to minimize the number of layoffs as part of the workforce reduction. They are demanding that alternative options be considered.

One day after the social plan was published, the Edipresse editorial teams passed a resolution, according to SDA. In it, they demand that options such as voluntary redundancies, reduced workloads and early retirement be analyzed in greater depth. According to a communiqué issued on Wednesday, this requires equal control.
In the letter, the editorial teams declare their solidarity with those affected in the areas of printing and production, which are particularly hard hit by the restructuring. These employees should also benefit from a social plan and not just from accompanying measures.
Managers and shareholders should also make sacrifices
The resolution also states that Edipresse employees must not be the only victims of the crisis. Management and shareholders should also make sacrifices in terms of their salaries and dividends.
At the beginning of October, the French-speaking Swiss media company announced redundancies: 30 jobs in the editorial offices, 50 in the print shop and 20 in production. Among other publications, the newspapers Le Matin, 24 heures and Tribune de Genève are affected by the redundancies.

New Lgk: Picking up prizes at the Gerber fondue game

Until now, Gerber Fondue has advertised with TV commercials and the phrase "When was the last time you lost your bread in a fondue?". Now Neue Lgk is picking up on the familiar message, but breaking new ground with an online game.

Together with The Eyecatcher, Neue Lgk has designed an online game that is advertised cross-media. In the Gerber fondue game the aim is to pick up the pieces of bread lost in a fondue. With every piece of bread saved, players increase their chances of winning prizes such as ski weekends for four or Davos sledges. And after each round of the game, a suitable mini-game awaits users: the aim is to scrape the crust out of the empty caquelon with the fondue fork to see if you have won an additional prize straight away. If you get caught up in the game fever, you can win more free spins using the tell-a-friend function and winning codes on Gerber fondue packs. And anyone who fancies a fondue can arrange to meet up with friends using the integrated "Doodle" agenda function.
The Gerber Fondue Game is being publicized by means of on-pack advertising, POS posters, advertisements, banners, social media ads and a mailing. It is available immediately and will run for several months. In addition, various instant prizes will be raffled off via SMS.
