Further speculation about new SRG Director General

Armin Walpen’s successor as head of the SRG will be elected on May 18. Speculation and denials have been swirling for the past six months. Currently, FDP National Council member Filipo Leutenegger and Hans-Peter Rohner, director of the Poubligroupe, are being mentioned as possible candidates.

According to Bazonline.ch, they are the only publicly named candidates who either stick to a clear "no comment" response to speculation or do not give a clear denial. Both would also fulfill the job profile: an experienced top manager with an affinity for the media industry who is familiar with political life in Switzerland.
However, Leutenegger would be difficult to sell to the SRG Board of Directors and the Assembly of Delegates, which must confirm the election. After all, he is regarded as a vehement critic of SRG, partly due to his position as President of the Campaign for Media Freedom. That leaves Hans-Peter Rohner. However, according to the original timetable for the selection of the Director General, a third candidate should still be in the running.

"No silver bullet for PR agencies in a year of crisis" - BPRA's annual media conference did not take place

Business development in the PR sector is an indicator of overall economic development in Switzerland. The results of the full survey should have been presented today, Friday, at the annual media conference.

This included comments on fee income and employee figures for the public relations agencies that are members of the BPRA, as well as the causes and drivers of business development. However, the press conference was canceled due to a lack of interest from the media, according to the association. This was despite the fact that the results of the survey, which were then sent out as a press release, revealed some interesting facts:
No silver bullet for PR agencies in the crisis year either
After the market for agencies united in the Swiss Association of PR Agencies (BPRA) had already stagnated in 2008, fee income fell by 9.2 percent in the year of the economic and financial market crisis. This means that the crisis did not spare the PR sector, which had been growing in previous years, writes the BPRA. Although the decline is less marked than in other communication disciplines, the market survey makes it clear that there is no silver bullet for PR agencies through the crisis. This is because there are both winners and losers in all market segments and fields of activity.
The PR industry is confident about 2010. The leading PR agencies in Switzerland generated fee income of CHF 64.5 million in the 2009 financial year with 287 employees (previous year: 297). In the previous year, the figure was CHF 71 million. After several years of constant growth, fee income stagnated at a high level in 2008. This decline of 9.2 percent is attributable to the majority of the
According to the BPRA, the decline in the number of agencies can be attributed to budget reductions caused by the economic and financial market crisis and a generally more volatile market environment. While the largest agencies in particular were able to make further gains in the 2008 financial year and the medium-sized and smaller agencies came under increasing pressure, the PR year 2009 showed greater fluctuations in all provider categories.
The two leading agencies in Switzerland - Farner Consulting and Burson-Marsteller - continued to grow slightly in 2009. The former Trimedia, whose successor organization will operate under the name Grayling from the current financial year, experienced a significant drop in fees. As a result, it fell from second to third place in the agency ranking. Farner Consulting remains at the top of the ranking for net fee income with CHF 14.9 million.
According to Roman Geiser, President of the BPRA and Chairman of Burson-Marsteller Switzerland, the market survey carried out among BPRA and non-BRPA members shows that there was no strategic panacea or no real silver bullet in the year of the economic crisis. Large, medium-sized and smaller agencies or providers with different strategic positioning experienced both fee growth and decline, Geiser continues. These fluctuations covered an enormous range from minus 37.5 percent to plus 9 percent. Although this is painful, PR agencies fared better in 2009 than other communication sectors, such as advertising, emphasizes the BPRA President.
The trend towards increased specialization and the need for size that has emerged in recent years has only continued slightly. According to the BPRA report, the majority of agencies see growth opportunities in the area of digital media (social media, online PR, web services) and in the area of reputation management and trust building. This fact also allows the industry to look to the current financial year with confidence, in which a recovery is emerging. Demand from the energy industry, the pharmaceutical/medtech/biotech sector, politics and the public sector is developing encouragingly.
Per capita turnover, which is important for the profitability of agencies, also came under slight pressure, falling by 6.3%. The fact that the larger agencies in Switzerland that are members of the BPRA continue to have a profitable business model is shown by the fact that their per capita turnover is significantly higher than that of the smaller PR service providers, which offer selected partial services with 1-4 employees. According to projections, these small providers with around 590 employees generated fee income of just over CHF 97 million. At CHF 165,000, the per capita revenue of these small providers is significantly lower than that of the agencies. The BPRA agencies reacted quickly to the market environment by reducing their personnel capacities compared to the previous year.
As in the previous year, there is no pronounced tendency towards further internationalization of the PR business in 2009. The fact that 9 of the 16 leading PR agencies are affiliated with a global network does not change this.

Trio goes hunting for the Grand

The Créatifs Romands have chosen Agence Trio to carry out their campaign for the 2010 Grand Prix Romand de la Création.

As a humorous metaphor for this competition, the visual concept takes aim at the creative idea hunters themselves for once. The communication professionals pose proudly with their hunting trophy, the well-deserved Grand. The subject was photographed by the CEPV students in a studio decor to emphasize its intentionally kitschy and caricature-like character.
With advertisements, posters, banners, invitations and mailings, the campaign invites all creative people to take part in the hunt. A hunting license is not required: all you need to do is register your work on the Grand's website. The trophy will be awarded on June 10 in Geneva.

100 years of Kunsthaus Zürich: short film by advertiser Ralf Kostgeld

To mark its 100th anniversary, the Kunsthaus Zürich has commissioned short films from an advertising professional, an artist, and a filmmaker. These three perspectives are intended to offer different views of the Kunsthaus and its surroundings.

Saturday, April 17 was the big premiere at the Kunsthaus Zürich. "Chez toi", the title of his film, is intended as a metaphor for the consumption of art and to show that it is worth engaging with art in various forms in order to better understand oneself and life. In this cinematic realization, enjoyment of art is to be taken literally. For on the menu of the restaurant "Chez toi", a couple are offered the brains of various artists for consumption. The story is surreal, with a touch of Buñuel. The film was produced by Pumpkin Film. The work can be seen in the permanent exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zürich until the end of the year.

After training in the graphics class at the Kunstgewerbeschule and further training in New York and San Francisco, Ralf Kostgeld worked as an art director, concept developer and creative director for various creative agencies in Germany and abroad from 1992 to 2009. Swisscom, UB. He was also a member of the film jury of the Art Director's Club ADC for many years, multiple winner of the EDI Film Prize and winner of more than 180 national and international awards at the most important festivals.

Media Focus: Advertising pressure increased in the first quarter of 2010

The advertising expenditure figures for the first quarter look quite positive. Gross advertising expenditure rose by 7.6 percent in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of 68.1 million francs compared with the first quarter of 2009.

The good quarterly result is mainly due to advertising activities in March. This was reported by Media Focus in a press release on Friday. Around 42 percent of the quarterly advertising volume, i.e. CHF 412.6 million, is attributable to the month of March 2010 alone.
The print media continued the positive trend in March 2010, closing the month 5.3% up on the previous year's figure, or CHF 10.4 million. The Posters media group outperformed the same month of the previous year by 17.1%, which corresponds to an increase of CHF 5.7 million. The highest gross advertising pressure was recorded in the food, vehicles and cosmetics + personal care sectors. All three sectors recorded higher figures compared to Q1 2009.
The food sector generated advertising pressure of CHF 107.8 million in the current year. This corresponds to an increase of 43.1 percent compared to the previous year. At CHF 24.4 million, chocolate + confectionery is the most important product group in the sector in the first quarter of 2010. In percentage terms, however, the fruit + vegetables product group recorded the strongest growth of 263.3%, an increase of CHF 4.3 million. As expected, the passenger car (new) product group recorded the greatest advertising pressure in the vehicles sector in the current year with around CHF 87.2 million. This corresponds to a slight increase of 1.6% compared to the first quarter of the previous year. In the lower mid-range and mid-range segments, gross advertising pressure fell by 30.5% and 28.7% respectively. In contrast, the Coupe + Sport Wagon and Luxury Car segments were advertised more intensively than in the previous year, with an increase of 316.2% and 179.5% respectively. Gross advertising pressure in the cosmetics + personal care sector rose by 20.5% in the first quarter of 2010, amounting to CHF 13.4 million. The greatest growth in value was recorded by the product groups body care cosmetics with an increase of 56.8% and hair care with 67.6% compared to the same period in the previous year.

Branders strengthens brand of Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank

Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank has engaged the agency Branders to carry out a comprehensive rebranding. Branders guided the process from brand analysis and brand strategy through to brand identity and implementation.

The brand identity is intended to position the cantonal bank uniquely in the competitive environment. At its core is the partnership concept "My Sparring Partner". At the center of the new brand identity is a visual world that portrays people in their natural environment: Different couples living their everyday lives in mutual trust and mastering challenges together. Black and white images are complemented by colourful illustrations that symbolize the added value of the partnership, the goals and dreams of the customers in a lively and diverse way.
The principle runs through the entire appearance: from brochures and the Internet to posters and advertisements. The new brand identity is accompanied by a campaign created in collaboration with the Zurich-based advertising agency ROD Kommunikation.
Responsible at Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank: Christoph Loeb (Head of Corporate Communications). Responsible at Branders: Pascal Geissbühler (Strategy Director), Claudia Kaufmann-Morf and Karin Erbacher (Brand Consulting), Roland Dill and Andrea Bürdel (Brand Design).

Obwalden and Nidwalden newspaper appeared first on

On Friday, the ONZ Obwalden and Nidwalden Zeitung was published for the first time with a large print run of 37,000 copies. It had already launched as an online publication on Thursday evening, providing ongoing coverage of the two cantons in Central Switzerland.

The ONZ appears as a printed edition twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday. Thematically, it concentrates on Obwalden and Nidwalden. It presents its material in five columns in four sections: Politics, Business, Culture and Sport. The event magazine "7 Tage" is also enclosed on Friday. In the first issue, ONZ takes stock of the general elections in Obwalden and Nidwalden, among other things. The business section opens with the helicopter transport of a gondola cabin. The culture section offers a review of the Stans Music Days. And in sport, the wrestling season is at the top of the list.
The new newspaper was launched within a very short space of time. This was triggered by the discontinuation of the Nidwaldner and Obwaldner Wochenblatt by LZ Medien in August 2009. The initiators met for the first time at the end of November. By the end of March, the share capital of three million francs had already been collected - distributed among over 400 shareholders. However, the initiators did not have to start from scratch. They took over the micro-newspaper concept from Gossweiler Media in Brienz.
After distribution to all households at the start, the newspaper guarantees advertising customers a minimum circulation of 10,000 copies beyond the launch phase. It hopes to have 10,000 subscribers within five years. ONZ has 15 full-time positions at its Alpnach site, 8 of which are in the editorial department. According to publisher and project manager Urs Gossweiler, around two thirds of the positions are currently filled. The positions that have not yet been filled will be temporarily taken over by the Gossweiler Media project team.
The OnZ project should not, however, be seen as a challenge to the Neue Luzerner Zeitung and its head papers in Central Switzerland, says Editor-in-Chief Francesco Welti. The aim is to obtain information from the region for the region and disseminate it via various channels.

Google Buzz: Hardly any active users

Around ten weeks after the launch of Google Buzz, a rather sad result is emerging for the Twitter competitor. So far, Buzz does not seem to have succeeded in motivating users to actively participate.

According to a recent analysis by Post Rank, 90 percent of all content in Buzz currently comes from automated bots. 63 percent is fed in by Twitter, while automated RSS feeds account for 27 percent.
Now the question arises as to why so few users are apparently actively buzzing, after all, the placement within such a busy space as the Gmail inbox is not bad. However, according to the press release, the fact that RSS and Twitter in particular are already well established and exclusive Buzz entries can hardly compete with the huge volume of integrated tweets certainly plays a role.
One advantage Buzz has over Twitter is its comment function, which encourages additional interaction. This and the "Like" function make Buzz very similar to Facebook status messages and is superfluous for many users because they communicate in this way on Facebook anyway.

Lobster Studios: Mario Aldrovandi resigns

There will be a change in the management of Lobster Studios in Schlieren: Mario Aldrovandi, Managing Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the film production company, is stepping down with immediate effect.

The resignation was due to "differing ideas about the company's strategy among the management and shareholders", as the company writes in a press release issued by SDA on Wednesday. The new Managing Director of Lobster Studios will be André Eichholzer.
The management structure was adjusted at the beginning of 2010. Previously, the 54-year-old Aldrovandi was Editor-in-Chief and a member of the Executive Board. In January, it was announced that Christoph Blocher's Robinvest had acquired a 52% stake in Lobster Studios.
Lobster Studios AG was founded in July 2009. It replaced the bankrupt TV production company Primetime. According to its own information, the company produces TV programs, video, film and sound works with a team of 28 people. Among other things, it produces programs for regional broadcasters, such as "Swissdate", "Futura TV", "Wohnraum TV" and "Kochen TV". Lobster Studios AG is an important pillar in the TV and advertising sector and has economic potential if managed well, as Christoph Blocher explained his financial commitment in January. Blocher founded the consulting company Robinvest, based in Männedorf ZH, in 2008. It is managed by his youngest daughter Rahel Blocher.
