Basel: Successful campaign against illegal TV reception
The Basel Public Prosecutor's Office carried out a raid early Thursday morning targeting the illegal reception of pay-TV channels. During the operation, officials made discoveries at more than a dozen restaurants and bars.
Extensive technical material and modified receivers were seized and confiscated in 14 of the 19 premises inspected, as the public prosecutor's office announced according to SDA. In addition, a 30-year-old Turkish man residing in Basel was arrested for allegedly offering the "flashed" receivers.
The raids, which were carried out simultaneously by around 50 officers from the Criminal Investigation Department with the support of the police, were triggered by a complaint from a Turkish digital TV provider. This provider offers coded and fee-based TV programs in Europe and Asia and is authorized to exclusively broadcast football matches from the Turkish professional league.
During checks in Turkish restaurants in Basel, the company discovered that "flashed" receivers were connected to the TV sets. These can be used to decode the broadcast signal and receive the paid program without a subscription. The company therefore filed a complaint for unauthorized data procurement and fraudulent procurement of a service. According to the public prosecutor's office, the Turkish company estimated the damage at CHF 35,000 per location.
