Under the sign of the red dot

Are you looking for a bold, convincing idea for your annual report or website, for a magazine or book, for household items, furniture or sounds? Then the Red Dot Design exhibition could be just the right inspiration. It is currently making a guest appearance in Basel.

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. The Essen-based "Design-Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen" has been awarding the Red Dot to successful communication design since 2000. The Red Dot is awarded in the categories of product design, communication design and design concept. The award has its origins in the product exhibition of the "Industrieforum e.V.", which was founded in 1955.
Last year, 6112 entries from 42 countries were submitted for the competition. 527 websites, posters, books, calendars, packaging, annual reports, campaigns, TV commercials, video games, corporate design and sound concepts were awarded the Red Dot - making them some of the best communication design in the world. The winning ideas are on show in Dubai, Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul, Moscow, Singapore and Beijing - and can also currently be admired at the Basel School of Design.
Swiss also dotted red
Of course, Swiss work worth seeing is also among the award winners. For example, the Basel agency Schaffner & Conzelmann is represented with the design of the fine food packaging for Coop, the agency Namics, based in Zurich, St. Gallen and Zug, with its corporate design created daily by its employees, and Basel-based Corporate-Sound AG with the sound design for the event ship MS Sonnenkönigin (listen: werbewoche.ch, Webcode 0710Sonnenkoenigin). A number of works surprise with a pleasant pinch of humor, for example the utensils for "Hotel Mama" or the paper shopping bag designed by Frankfurter Merkwürdig GmbH. It shows a pug - and there is a hole where the pug's tongue should actually be. This defect is quickly replaced by a freshly bought shirt, plucked out a little through the hole by the bagging saleswoman. To be or to design, that is the question here.

Schaerer und Partner joins AZ

The advertising agency Schaerer und Partner was on the move for its client Aargauer Zeitung: A shuttle composition designed by the agency for the AZ has been circulating on the Wynental and Suhrental Railway WSB for several days.

This is adorned with a huge Aargauer Zeitung lettering and the claim "The Aargauer Zeitung transports content". The 25,000 travelers per day will be joined by countless motorists, passers-by and residents who will see the two-meter-high lettering. Further AZ activities are already planned around the WSB.

Swiss Press Council reprimands Simmental Zeitung - No hearing despite serious allegations

The Simmental-Thun-Saanenland Hospital Group (Spital STS) has filed a complaint with the Press Council regarding the Simmental Zeitung’s reporting. On June 25, 2009, the publisher published serious allegations against Spital STS and its board members, who were named in the article, without giving the other side an opportunity to respond.

In the case of serious allegations, the opposing side must be heard, the Press Council has now ruled, thus proving Spital STS AG right. Even if the opposing side also has its say in a further period of time, it cannot be expected that the readership will always be aware of the entire topic, writes the Press Council.
Spital STS AG accused the Simmental Zeitung of conducting "a campaign against them in the context of the hospital dispute that has divided the region for some time". The newspaper's articles about the controversial new hospital location were "biased and violated the rules of journalistic fairness".

SFLB: Boulders laid in the way for Switzerland Tourism

Switzerland Tourism is launching its current summer campaign today and is focusing entirely on hiking. At the heart of the new campaign is a spot with spectacular landscape images and a humorous story.

The 90-second film was created by Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett and shot by Swiss director Michael Fueter. "We do everything for perfect vacations." Switzerland Tourism has been advertising under this motto for over a year now. First with the rock cleaners who cleaned the mountains for the tourists, later with a winter film in which hut wardens prepared for the day.
The current summer film impresses with fantastic landscape scenes and a humorous story: two mountain climbers carry a huge, heavy boulder for days over mountains and meadows, through valleys and forests. Only to put it down at the end where it is useful to a few hikers.
The commercial will be used as a 55-second TV spot in Switzerland, but will also be used internationally - on TV in Italy, France, the Netherlands and England, and in cinemas in Germany, France and the USA.
In addition, many different measures are designed to whet the appetite for hiking and vacations in Switzerland. For example, in collaboration with UBS, a "Hiking Guide" with the 32 most beautiful hikes in Switzerland is being published for the first time. From the end of April, hiking enthusiasts will be able to download a free iPhone app for all 32 selected routes. Sophisticated hiking maps from Swisstopo with additional information on the routes, attractions and levels of difficulty are also available, so that the most important information is always to hand when out and about. A hiking promotion in Swiss cities as well as London, Paris and Frankfurt with countless hiking trails draws attention to the wealth of hiking kilometers in Switzerland. And finally, a personalized mailing with a circulation of over 200,000 copies will also be used internationally.

Radio Jay challenges decision to hand over concession to Radio Energy

Radio Jay is challenging the decision by the DETEC, which in January had approved the transfer of Radio Monte Carlo Züri RMC’s FM license to Radio Energy.

The Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) had examined the transmission application from the Ringiers private broadcaster and concluded in January that the requirements for approval were met. Radio Jay is now appealing against this to the Federal Administrative Court. Deborah Murith, spokesperson for the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM), confirmed on Wednesday that the appeal had been received by the Federal Administrative Court. According to SDA, she confirmed a report from 20 Minuten.
Unlike Ringier with Radio Energy, Radio Jay had applied for the license in the greater Zurich area with Radio Züri Live, but was not considered. The license was awarded to Radio Monte Carlo Züri RMC. Radio Energy, on the other hand, only applied for the larger license for the Zurich/Glarus area, but was left empty-handed when the license was awarded in autumn 2008.
Radio Energy could now remain on air thanks to the deal with RMC - provided the Federal Administrative Court does not uphold RadioJay's appeal. The Federal Law on Radio and Television expressly provides for license transmissions, regardless of whether someone has applied for them, as OFCOM spokeswoman Murith said.

Swap Zurich country for Thurgau

The deal between Tamedia, NZZ, and the Gut family comes at just the right time, riding the wave of Panini fever surrounding the 2010 World Cup. Finally, everything everyone has always wanted but couldn’t achieve is coming together. Trading makes it happen.

A look back: When the shareholders of the Thurgauer Zeitung (TZ) announced the sale of their publishing house to Tamedia, the publisher of the Tages-Anzeiger, at the beginning of September 2005, the St. Galler Tagblatt (SGT) was very upset. The St. Galler Verlag, a subsidiary of the NZZ Group, had also negotiated with the TZ about cooperation in the print and advertising sector and later even about integration into the SGT headline system. "In the end, the Zurich bidder was surprisingly awarded the contract - but not for a cooperation model, but for a complete takeover," the SGT sobered up the day after the deal was announced.
The government council of the canton of Thurgau also regretted the takeover of the Thurgauer Zeitung by Zurich-based Tamedia. This means that a media company with a long tradition is losing its independence. However, it sees the takeover by Tamedia as an opportunity, as the Frauenfeld site could be expanded as a result and the canton would continue to be served by two cantonal daily newspapers.
In a weekly interview with Werbewoche in April 2006, Daniel Hofer, then Director of Publishing and Production and member of the Executive Board at Neue Zürcher Zeitung AG since January 2006, answered the question of whether NZZ would swap its holdings around Lake Zurich for the Thurgauer Zeitung: "Swapping Thurgau for these holdings is absolutely not a topic of conversation for me. On the contrary: the regional newspapers and the NZZ are a very good match and complement each other to provide a very attractive product offering for readers in the greater Zurich area".

Eastern Swiss print shop Swiss PSO-certified

The Goldach-based printing company Grafimedia Druck has been certified under the Swiss PSO label.

At the beginning of 2010, the Swiss Association for Visual Communication Viscom launched the Swiss PSO label - a quality designation for the graphic arts industry. The Breu brothers, owners of Grafimedia Druck for 16 years, applied for certification. They received certification within three months.
Thanks to Swiss PSO, the optimal workflow, print products and customer relations, for example, were tested and comprehensively examined, as Grafimedia writes in a press release.

Voice creates atmosphere - and expert knowledge

Just like the candidates, experts also need to prepare for exams. That’s why marketing specialists who serve as examiners for the «Presentation and Communication Techniques» course attend an annual «training camp» for quality assurance. This spring, the experts received a concise introduction to the tools of the human voice from an expert who is both knowledgeable and skilled in the field.

What good is it if a presentation is technically accurate but delivered in such a staccato of words that nothing of what is said sticks with the recipient? Or when a head of marketing wants to get his staff on board with a new course, but instead of using the voice of a lion, he uses the voice of a mouse? This spring, the "Presentation and Communication Techniques" seminar of the professional examination for marketing specialists with a federal certificate dealt with this subject - the voice and all its situations. While at last year's seminar it was TV personality Patrick Rohr who brought the experts up to date with the latest communication techniques, Peter Gilli took his specialists into completely new territory for many of them. The voice - possibly a somewhat exotic topic at first glance - but definitely one that comes into its own in every presentation and plays a key role in oral examinations: "The voice in and of itself is not graded in the examination," said Peter Gilli before the event, "but it plays a key role when performing in front of an audience - for newly qualified marketing specialists, experts and in everyday practice." For the Head of Presentation and Communication Techniques, a topic that deserved to be explored in greater depth: "Although all of our experts have their theoretical tools together and gain practical experience on the job every day, quality assurance also involves constantly staying on the ball." The topic of voice, said Gilli, "has not been addressed very much so far, but there is certainly plenty of scope for in-depth study and new learning here."
The doctrine of the "sounding breath"
The first few minutes of the speaker's appearance confirmed just how right Gilli was with this assumption. Michael Berndonner, former stock exchange trader, later choirmaster and current lecturer at the University of St. Gallen for speech technique, speech design and performance skills, shed light on the topic of "voice" from every angle and in a manner that didn't let the audience get bored for a second. Especially not at the beginning, when he instructed the 60 or so surprised experts to rehearse a song and then perform it. Two volunteers actually ventured forward. The purpose of the exercise was to show what a personal organ the voice is. Building on this, Berndonner went on to talk about the organ itself, including medical issues, listening exercises and vocal theory - and didn't forget the practical tips: clearing your throat, the experts learned, is a no-go. Instead of mistreating the vocal chords in this way, it is better to hum. Coffee and orange juice can make the vocal chords worse; speakers are better off drinking lukewarm water and apples. And if you always want to get a message across vocally, you should speak slowly enough, add dynamics to your speech with loud and quiet passages and set breathing caesuras. "Singing and speaking is sounding breath," Berndonner proclaimed. The experts took away from this afternoon that the voice is one of the match-deciding soft factors in lectures, talks and presentations. Voice coach Berndonner, who is never at a loss for a vocal interlude, was able to demonstrate how closely the psyche and voice are related and how much this organ deserves to be cared for and trained. His advice and tips are likely to have been doubly valuable for experts in the field of presentation and communication techniques. Firstly, they helped future candidates to understand the role of the voice better - and secondly, there were certainly takeaways for their own next speech or presentation. A win-win situation in a class of its own.
Insights for experts
It can be assumed that the examination experts in the subject "Presentation and Communication Techniques" have gone through life differently since this event - and therefore also refocused their eyes and ears when it comes to seriously assessing the next generation of marketing specialists. What does a candidate's jaw posture reveal? What does the candidate's voice sound like, what does it reveal about their current state of mind and their actual personality in addition to the actual message? And, probably most importantly: is the candidate also convincing vocally during the presentation, are facts and emotions conveyed in such a way that the recipient "buys" what is being communicated? Voice creates mood - this essence has become ingrained in the hearts and minds of experts. Just like Peter Gilli. The head of the "Presentation and Communication Techniques" course for marketing specialists was pleased with the lively, always informative and sometimes unorthodox way in which speaker Michael Berndonner got his message across. The event, which was anything but a "revision course", but rather a seminar with a refreshing and refreshing character, fits in with Gilli's line and the way he sees the professional examination for marketing specialists with a federal certificate and their examination professionals: "It is important that the experts - just like the candidates - prepare intensively for this federal professional examination, which is carried out by Swiss Marketing (SMC) under the supervision of the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology (OPET). Here and today, the experts were able to get professionally fit, learn new things and gain important insights that can be directly applied to the exams. That's how it should be." After Berndonner's inspiring presentation at the end of the day, an aperitif was held at the end of the day where, in addition to the voice, another detail was cultivated that can be decisive in practice: a good atmosphere.

There is always something of the personality in his voice: former stock exchange trader Michael Berndonner during his presentation.

Charging values with meaning

Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank has a new look. Branders designed the branding. Rod is handling the advertising campaign.

Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank is a successful regional brand. However, in a market with increasing competition, the traditional bank requires a focused strategy and a differentiated image. The Zurich agency Branders won the mandate in fall 2008 after a pitch with three agencies and accompanied the process from brand analysis and brand strategy to brand appearance and implementation. The resulting image campaign is currently being implemented by the advertising agency Rod Kommunikation.
Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank offers a wide range of products and services for companies and private individuals. Its comprehensive expertise is combined with a long-term commitment to the region. This is how the cantonal bank positions itself "uniquely in the competitive environment", as the responsible strategist Pascal Geissbühler explains at Branders. At the heart of the new branding is the partnership concept "My sparring partner". The bank not only advises and supports clients competently, but also acts with "feu sacré" and foresight. It not only confirms, it challenges, inspires and motivates. "The kind of partner you want" is the bank's motto.
At the center of the new brand identity is a visual world that portrays people in their natural environment: Different couples who live their everyday lives in mutual trust and overcome challenges together.
The authentic black and white images are complemented by colourful illustrations that vividly and diversely symbolize the added value of the partnership, the goals and the dreams of the customers. A simple principle that characterizes the entire appearance: from numerous brochures to the Internet to posters and advertisements. pan
