Last but not least: Lidl shows a lack of accuracy when displaying posters

Lidl is opening a new store in Altendorf this week. As usual, the discount retailer wanted to draw attention to the opening with posters in the neighboring villages. But is Altendorf next to Pfäffikon SZ or near Pfäffikon ZH?

Large posters in Pfäffikon ZH are currently advertising the new Lidl store in Altendorf SZ. One or two passers-by may have wondered about this. Why drive to Altendorf, 30 kilometers away, when there is a Lidl store in nearby Wetzikon? The explanation is obvious: the posters should actually be in Pfäffikon SZ. It remains unclear who is responsible for the faux pas. Lidl does not want to disclose which advertising agency and poster company are working for the German discounter. It merely told the Tagesanzeiger that it works with Swiss companies. It can happen. But it is certainly embarrassing.

Two invisible but dangerous scissors

Staff cuts in newsrooms are accompanied by a sharp increase in the number of PR professionals at companies, associations, and government agencies. This is a dangerous trend, says Karl Lüönd, a freelance journalist and author.

The print media crisis has sharpened our focus on survival strategies, at least in theory. It is becoming increasingly clear that two tracks are diverging: the free publicity of the quickly made and quickly discarded consumer papers - and the immersion in the local and/or the qualitative. The market confirms that both have a chance. The continuing success of 20 Minuten and the progress of Blick am Abend confirm the one assertion, while the stable situation of many B titles in the regions, as well as conspicuous success stories such as Hamburger Zeit, confirm the other.
In an uncomfortable position are the papers that until now have wanted to be for everyone: the larger A titles, daily newspapers that have felt responsible for both the universe and the immediate surroundings plus the most important (i.e. most newsworthy) subject areas, from cars to fashion to vacations and real estate, with the same claim to exclusivity. Here, the cost-cutting measures that the editorial offices are forced to implement already look like acts of desperation, and they are primarily at the expense of freelance journalists - not because this is where the biggest problem or the most savings potential lies, but because this is where savings can be made most easily and, above all, most quickly. Even in the best houses, fees have been cut by up to two thirds!
How is this supposed to go together? On the one hand, the insight that only deepening and individualization are suitable in the long term to differentiate the convenience product from the quality paper, on the other hand, the clear-cutting in the very places where the paper would be particularly strong and storm-proof.

Fifa's choice of sponsors criticized - too unhealthy

The main sponsors of the World Cup include Coca Cola, McDonald's and Budweiser. This has led to criticism from various health organizations: The football association had failed to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Criticism has come from the international cancer research organization WCRF, for example. If FIFA were to set a good example and announce that in future it would not accept sponsors who promote unhealthy products, this could give a strong boost to human health, Teresa Nightingale, CEO of the organization, told the BBC. She also receives support from the Association of Dietitians. Football reaches precisely the target group that is otherwise difficult to reach with health messages, she told Pressetext. Little is likely to change for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, however, as the contracts of the three sponsors criticized will last until then.

Ruf Lanz: Lovely in football fever

To coincide with the World Cup in South Africa, Swiss dairy farmers are launching an advertising campaign featuring a new TV commercial. The star of the commercial, produced by Ruf Lanz, is once again Lovely the dairy cow. This time, she shows off her soccer skills.

Lovely demonstrates light-footedly that milk is "really strong". She dribbles the ball like a virtuoso Ronaldinho and then crosses powerfully from the Swiss pasture around the globe directly into the South African steppe - right onto the head of a lion dozing under the sun. The commercial was conceived by Ruf Lanz and realized by Ruf Lanz in close collaboration with Markenfilm Schweiz under the direction of Tibor Glage and the post-production specialists from UPP.

Ringier: charges filed against former management member

Ringier has filed a complaint against a former executive. The man is alleged to have embezzled a high six-figure sum for his own personal gain.

Edi Estermann, Head of Corporate Communications at Ringier, confirmed a corresponding report in the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper on Saturday. The former employee of the Marketing Services division is said to have placed fictitious orders with a market research company in the name of Ringier over a long period of time. He then demanded the fees paid back and put them in his own pocket. Estermann told the SDA news agency that this involved a high six-figure sum.
The accounting department only noticed the irregularities after the employee had already left the company. He resigned in November 2009 and left his job in February 2010. At the beginning of May, Ringier filed a complaint with the Zurich public prosecutor's office. According to Estermann, this is a "serious case". Nothing like this had ever happened at Ringier before. Estermann did not provide any information about the period of the fee payments, citing the ongoing proceedings.

Unusually many live broadcasts on SF info

According to its license, SF info is a rebroadcast channel. In reality, however, it airs numerous live shows. This effectively gives Swiss Television a third channel.

Council debates from the Federal Parliament, press conferences on the national football team, broadcasts from the Swiss Economic Forum, next week's Tour de Swiss: SF info is not just showing reruns of "Tagesschau" or "10 vor 10". Under the terms of its license, SF info is allowed to show first broadcasts "exceptionally" when "events of national importance" are involved. However, it is questionable whether the funeral of Michael Jackson or football matches without Swiss participation are included. This is also the criticism of Dominik Kaiser, head of the private broadcaster 3+. "Showing expensive sports programs on SF info and thus further expanding the program is the wrong way to go," he told the NZZ am Sonntag. It would make more sense to show them on SF1 or two and, against the backdrop of a possible fee increase, to bring the budget back into balance.
SF spokesman David Affentranger defends himself against the accusations. There is no strategy to expand SF info into a full program. It is correct that there is currently a certain accumulation of live broadcasts on SF info. According to Affentranger, this will change again after the World Cup. The live broadcasts have been agreed with the Federal Office of Communications. In financial terms, there would be practically no additional expense for Swiss television.

Last but not least: The Greeks in the Paulaner Garten

For once, it's not Indian business tourists who are causing a stir in the Paulaner advertising. Nor are they Japanese. The Munich brewery's latest "victim" is the Greeks. The debt crisis sends its regards.

The plot is quickly told: A German is sitting at a table with three visitors from Greece. When he wants to pick up the bill, the Greeks wave him off: "You've already paid enough," says one of them. "We Greeks do that," agrees another. Well, the commercial isn't really funny. It's probably a bit primitive to simplify the debt crisis in this way. In any case, there is no sign of displeasure in the Paulaner beer garden. The round of beer we ordered arrives, we toast and everyone is happy. "Samma liquid again!"
