iAd launches July 1

As Apple boss Steve Jobs announced at the developer conference currently taking place in San Francisco, the company's own advertising platform, iAd, will be launched on July 1 of this year.

The enormous number of advance bookings for the second half of 2010, estimated by the Californian technology company at 60 million dollars, shows that the new service is meeting with keen interest from advertisers.
"iAd offers advertisers the emotion of television combined with the interactivity of the Internet, giving users a new way to discover advertising without forcing them to leave their favorite apps," explains the Apple CEO according to the press release. The advertising platform could be used to reach millions of iPhone and iPod touch users who are already using the new iOS 4 operating system. This is a highly desirable demographic for advertisers, according to Jobs.
According to Jobs, iAd will have a rich and high-caliber portfolio of advertising clients right from the start. These include brands such as AT&T, Best Buy, Chanel, Nissan, JC Penney, Liberty Mutual Group, Sears, Turner Broadcasting System and Unilever. According to Jobs, the estimated booking budget of 60 million dollars for the second half of 2010 corresponds to 48 percent, or almost half of the total advertising expenditure forecast for mobile display advertising in the USA for this half of the year.

FAZ posts loss in 2009 - fewer ads, higher circulation

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported a loss of 19.8 million euros in 2009. The slump in the job market has been particularly hard on the long-established newspaper. In contrast, circulation figures for both the FAZ and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS) have risen.

The savings program initiated in 2009 should now contribute to an improvement this year. In addition, Managing Directors Tobias Trevisan and Roland Gerschermann are expecting higher sales revenues in view of the growing sales trend, particularly of FAS. In order to cope with the structural change, the online offering Faz.net is also to be expanded and developed "into a profitable online business" as a third pillar. According to industry service Horizont, FAZ intends to concentrate primarily on themed portals such as FAZfinance.net.

SNK standardizes the image of the Canton of St. Gallen

Scholtysik Niederberger Kraft (SNK) is developing the new visual identity for the canton of St. Gallen. The agency prevailed over 47 competitors in a competitive pitch.

The challenge of the project is to reduce the complexity of the canton's image by standardizing it while leaving each organizational unit room for maneuver, the agency wrote in a press release on Tuesday. The main objectives are efficient communication, recurring cost savings and greater transparency. As part of the new image, SNK is developing the design of the relevant resources and media: from the website and vehicle lettering to forms and publications.

Ticino football commentator not allowed to attend the World Cup

Armando Ceroni, who usually commentates on the Swiss national football team's matches for Radiotelevisione Svizzera di lingua italiana (RSI), is not allowed to travel to South Africa. A TV interview with national team coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was his undoing.

Ceroni had violated the code of conduct. As a result, his accreditation for the World Cup in South Africa has been withdrawn, said RSI Head of Sport Andreas Wyden at the request of the news agency SDA. The decision was made by the Business Unit Sport (BUS), which is responsible for implementing SRG's sports strategy. It coordinates and organizes major projects such as the Football World Cup for the national radio and television broadcasters.
Ceroni is accused of having conducted an unauthorized interview with Hitzfeld. In doing so, he risked jeopardizing "the delicate relationship with the national team", writes RSI in a communiqué. Ceroni will not be able to follow the World Cup on site because of this faux pas. The 50-year-old had already been banned from commentating on the international match against Italy last Saturday. Many RSI TV viewers noticed this immediately. Ceroni is one of the station's best-known faces.

Schoch & Sonders: New brand design for Orell Füssli

The Zurich-based branding agency Schoch & Sonders is responsible for developing the new brand identity for Orell Füssli Bookstores. The new brand design has been in place in all branches in German-speaking Switzerland since the end of May. In addition, a media campaign is currently underway to support the launch.

Schoch & Sonders created and implemented a new brand design in collaboration with the brand managers and the management of the Orell Füssli bookstore. The appearance was fundamentally revised for the first time since 1993. The agency was responsible for the development of a new brand strategy, the brand design, the brand image and the brand manual. The claim "my book" is intended to express Orell Füssli's awareness that the choice of a book is something very personal and emotional.
The launch campaign in German-speaking Switzerland also started at the same time as the launch. It will run for three weeks from May 31 to June 19 in print, online and outdoors.

National Council: Parliament to set SRG fees

Parliament is to be given the authority to set the amount of radio and TV license fees. On Tuesday, the National Council narrowly approved a parliamentary initiative by Natalie Rickli (SVP/ZH) by a vote of 94 to 89, with 3 abstentions.

The development of the level of fees shows that the Federal Council has regularly responded to the SRG's demands, but hardly takes the interests of fee payers into account, Rickli explained her motion. Parliament could take better account of these interests. Rickli, who works professionally for private media companies and is Vice President of "Aktion Medienfreiheit", is also bothered by the fact that SRG is increasingly competing with private providers. Against this backdrop, the "massive" increase in fees over the last 20 years is incomprehensible.
The responsible Telecommunications Committee had still clearly rejected the proposal by 17 votes to 7. Commission spokesperson Jacqueline Fehr (SP/ZH) feared that a shift in competence to parliament would lead to attempts to exert political pressure. It would also endanger the independence of the media and interfere with the SRG's freedom of programming. Fehr also pointed out that 40 out of every 100 francs in fees go to French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino. This distribution guarantees the cohesion of the country and cultural diversity. From the SVP's point of view, the SRG offering can be reduced for minorities.
