Since 1982, net sales have been collected by the Advertising Statistics Foundation directly from the media by means of written surveys. Only the figures for direct advertising are based on an extrapolation. However, the trade fair association left the Foundation in 2010 and no longer provides its figures. In addition, the turnover from direct advertising is based on a new calculation basis. For these reasons, the overall result presented today by the Swiss Advertising Statistics Foundation is around CHF 425 million lower than in 2009.
Comparable sales increased by 5.3 percent
However, the results for most media categories remain comparable. For example, net press sales rose by 4.5 percent to CHF 2.001 billion in 2010, TV increased by 12.4 percent to CHF 669 million, outdoor advertising revenues grew by 1 percent to CHF 608 million, radio remained stable at CHF 135 million, the address books now show CHF 227 million, an increase of 5.6 percent, and the other media (teletext, cinema, ad screen) amounted to CHF 40 million, 8.1 percent more than in 2009. In short, these still comparable media generated total net advertising sales of CHF 3.68 billion in 2010, 5.3% more than in 2009. However, there is one fly in the ointment: In 2010, total comparable net sales are still 6.6 percent below their 10-year average of just under CHF 4 billion.
That leaves direct advertising: according to the new calculation system, it amounts to CHF 1.019 billion, compared to CHF 1.215 billion in 2009. Advertising turnover from the Internet industry is still not included in the advertising statistics. This sector has so far been neither able nor willing to provide data that would be comparable with the other categories. The table (see below) therefore includes Media Focus gross sales as a benchmark.
Print: upward trend in all categories
Following a 20.4% decline in net advertising sales in the print media in 2009, they rose again by 4.5% in 2010. However, the press is still 17.5% below its 10-year average of almost CHF 2.4 billion. The largest increase in 2010 was recorded by the special press (primarily thanks to the Migros and Coop customer newspapers), which grew by 12.6%, followed by the general press (+7.7%), the financial and business press (+6.3%), the Sunday press (+3.1%), the daily press (+2.9%) and the trade press (+2.4%). Only the regional weekly press remained stable at +0.1%.
TV: Record sales in 2010
A total of CHF 669 million was generated from television advertising and sponsorship of programs. This means that TV as a medium is not only 11.6% above its 10-year average of just under CHF 600 million, but is also reporting record revenues. At +16.9%, the biggest jump in revenue in 2010 was achieved by the private Swiss broadcasters - 3+ and Schweizer Sportfernsehen (SSF) send their regards. SRG broadcasters were able to increase their revenues by 13.9%, and foreign advertising windows increased their net advertising revenues by 12%.
Cinema and teletext remain below the line
And where do the other media stand in 2010 when measured against the respective 10-year average? The radio medium is doing relatively well in this respect, as it is 1.1% above its long-term average. Out-of-home advertising is also slightly above the average at 0.9%, with billboard advertising sales 8.5% below the average and traffic advertising sales 22.5% above the average. Cinema sales, on the other hand, remained 23.1% below the 10-year average despite growth in 2010, and teletext sales were even 43.7% below the average.
