SF: End for "Off to the Kitchen

The cooking show «Ab in die Küche» on Swiss television channel SF did not appeal to viewers. It is being canceled effective immediately following the season finale of its first season.

Although the season got off to a good start with a market share of 29.4 percent, viewer favorability has declined sharply, an SF spokesperson told the news agency SDA. In the final broadcast on Monday, the market share was only 20.2 percent.

The program managers at Swiss Radio and Television SRF will now work with Betty Bossi and Ringier Entertainment Fernsehen to develop a concept for a new cooking show. "The topic of cooking should continue to have a slot on Swiss television," the spokesperson continued. From next Monday, SF 1 will be showing new episodes of the quiz show "1 against 100" at 8.05 pm.

Media Focus: Slightly less advertising in April

After peaking in March, gross advertising spend fell slightly in April 2011, totaling just under 380 million francs. This is shown in Media Focus’s monthly report on trends in the Swiss advertising market. The volume exceeded that of previous years by 5.1 percent (+18.4 million compared to 2010) and 8.8 percent (+30.7 million Swiss francs compared to 2009), respectively.

In percentage terms, the sector with the lowest advertising pressure, "Tobacco Products," increased the most in April compared to the same month last year (+61.7 percent; + 666,226 Swiss francs). This development was mainly driven by the advertising of the Philip Morris brands "Chesterfield" and "Marlboro". Among the most intensively advertised brands in April 2011 were also "Parisienne".

Development of advertising print as of April 2011

With an increase in advertising print of 36 percent (+1.3 million Swiss francs), the "IT + Office" sector reported the second-largest percentage increase year-on-year. In April 2011, the distribution of gross advertising print in this sector was 89.5 percent for "IT" (CHF 4.3 million) and 10.5 percent for "Office" (CHF 513,421). Within the "IT" product group, the segment with the highest advertising print was "Computer (laptop)". Advertising for laptops recorded a share of around 46.5 percent (CHF 2.0 million). By contrast, the advertising share for "Netbooks + Tablets" (7.3 percent; CHF 320,018) or "Desktop Computers" (2, 3 percent; CHF 102,390) was at a very low level.

Around a third more money was invested in advertising for "Telecommunications" in April 2011 (+ 29.5 percent; + 4.0 million Swiss francs). As usual, "Mobile" gobbled up the biggest share of advertising money (63.6 percent; CHF 11.3 million). According to Media Focus, the development of advertising for "apps" is interesting. Since September 2009, these have been actively advertised in traditional advertising media. Advertising pressure increased significantly since 2009 and reached its peak to date in December 2010 (CHF 3.1 million). At the beginning of the year, gross advertising print fell sharply, rose slightly in March 2011, but subsequently fell again and in April 2011 still generated gross advertising print of around 1.4 million Swiss francs. "Is this already the first indicator that apps have lost their appeal?

Fairness Commission: Complaint about alcohol advertising upheld

The Fair Trading Commission has upheld a complaint filed by IG Plakat Raum Gesellschaft (IG PRG) regarding an alcohol advertisement. The outdoor advertising company Clear Channel had posted the disputed billboard in the immediate vicinity of a school building on Kalkbreitestrasse in Zurich.

According to an internal industry regulation, tobacco and alcohol advertising must be at least 100 meters away from school buildings. However, random checks have shown that the leading outdoor advertising companies do not adhere to this regulation, writes the IG PRG on its website.

The IG PRG is campaigning for less poster advertising in the city and canton of Zurich. Further cases are pending with the Fairness Commission.

Clear Channel will respond to the complaint, Beat Sulzer, Head of Sales at Clear Channel, told the SDA news agency. "We want to make sure that things like this don't happen," he said. The company will review the locations of the billboards and adjust its computers accordingly.

The Swiss Fairness Commission serves as a self-regulatory body for the advertising industry. It is made up of consumers, media professionals and advertisers. Any person is authorized to complain to this commission about advertising that they consider to be unfair. (SDA)

Petition "Fee monster" submitted

Radio and television license fees are to be reduced from the current 462 francs to 200 francs per year. A group led by Natalie Rickli, a Zurich-based SVP National Council member and member of the executive board at Goldbach Media, is calling for this change through a petition. She submitted the signatures on Tuesday.

According to the committee, over 143'000 people have signed the petition "Fee monster - 200 francs are enough!" - around 135,000 of them on the Internet. Natalie Rickli assured the media in Bern on Tuesday that measures had been taken to prevent multiple signatures as far as possible. The petition was supported by the SVP, the young parties of SVP, FDP, CVP and EDU as well as by "Bye Bye Billag", a Facebook group, which under this title is supporting the Abolition of Billag and is preparing a popular initiative to this end.

Rickli considers the SRG's offering to be too large. She says there is no need for so many radio and TV stations to fulfill the public service: "What private stations can do should be left to the private ones." The involvement of Rickli, who sits on the management board of advertising marketer Goldbach Media Group, raises questions. Critics accuse her of pursuing personal interests. Weakening SRG brought business to her employer, which markets private radio and TV stations. She considers these attacks "highly questionable," Rickli told the Tagesanzeiger, referring to the militia system.

No device-independent fee

In addition, the committee opposes the parliament's decision that in the future every household and every company should pay fees - regardless of whether a receiver is available. The petition committee considers these Obligation to pay fees for unfair. According to Francisca Brechbühler, initiator of "Bye Bye Billag," there are "several thousand" people in Switzerland who consciously do without radio and television. According to the will of the Federal Council, only socially disadvantaged people should be exempt from the fees, the Council of States wants to exempt small businesses from the obligation to pay fees.

Regarding the collection agency, the petition also contains a demand: Billag should have to refund all savings and unpaid fee money to the fee payers. The members of the committee reserve the right to launch a popular initiative, said Rickli. At the moment, however, they lack the human and financial resources to do so.

Swiss Syndicate of Media Professionals SSM criticizes petition

In a statement, the Swiss Syndicate of Media Professionals SSM criticizes the petition submitted on Tuesday. A demand for a fee reduction sounds good, because "who wouldn't like to pay less for an SBB ticket, less for a postal letter or less for waste disposal fees". However, a fee reduction of 57 percent would result in the disappearance of many popular programs, according to the union. It would also harm Switzerland, since the fees are largely used to produce programs in all four national languages. A weakening of the public broadcasting offer would also lead to a strengthening of foreign broadcasters in Switzerland.

Germany: Corporate sound project with Swiss sound designer

What does a company that manufactures casting resins sound like? This question will occupy the employees of the German company Rampf over the next few weeks. The end result will be a corporate sound that will accompany the company's image.

According to a report in the Nürtinger Zeitung, the company has engaged the services of Swiss sound designer and film music composer Peter Philippe Weiss, owner of Corporate Sound in Basel. As part of the project, employees are to search for sounds and noises that are typical in the manufacture of plastics and in the production of mixing and dosing systems. These are then to be acoustically staged in a workshop with Weiss.

The project, initiated by Professor Frank Dievernich from the Bern University of Applied Sciences, was presented on Monday. The event with Peter Philippe Weiss also marked the start of the "Innovation stars on the red couch" series at Rampf in Grafenberg. Guests who have taken bold, innovative paths will be invited at irregular intervals.
