Publimedia launches mobile advertising initiative

Publimedia is launching the «Mobile-too Initiative.» The goal of the initiative is to complement traditional print and online campaigns with mobile applications such as mobile display, performance advertising, and mobile search engine advertising.

Switzerland has a very high penetration of smartphones and tablets compared to Europe, writes Publimedia, the key account unit of Publigroupe and Publicitas, in a press release. Switzerland is also one of the leaders in the use of apps. Advertising presence - in the right place at the right time - has therefore become significantly more important than the advertising environment. Publimedia is picking up on this trend with the "Mobile-too-Initiative" and is pushing to supplement existing traditional print and online campaigns with mobile display, performance advertising and mobile SEA.

Scholz & Friends Zurich: "Hot Air" in the Social Network

A small step in the fight against the climate killer that is the Internet: To mark its 10th anniversary, the nonprofit foundation Myclimate, in collaboration with Scholz & Friends Zurich, has launched the Facebook app «Heisse Luft.».

With the app, users can mark unnecessary status messages from friends as what they are: hot air. The campaign is intended to sensitize users on the social web to the issue of CO2 emissions caused by the Internet, the agency said in a statement. The IT industry is now responsible for the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as global air traffic, it adds. And Facebook also contributes its share: Every status message consumes electricity on servers, for which a small amount of CO2 is emitted. That sounds harmless, but with 800 million registered users, 60 million status updates per day, and 42,000 status messages per minute, you can imagine how much it adds up to.

However, Myclimate does not want to reprimand, but rather gives the CO2 emitters on Facebook the opportunity to make up for their behavior, it continues: With just a few clicks, users can offset their hot air with a small donation at www.facebook.com/myclimate. The contribution flows into certified carbon offset projects. The contribution flows into certified climate protection projects. By the way: The amount of CO2 emissions that were generated to create the app were of course also compensated.

Dominique Hiltbrunner takes over Swiss Bauer stake from Espace Media

Dominique Hiltbrunner will take over the specialist media Agrar and the 49% stake in Schweizer Bauer from Espace Media on July 1, 2012.

According to a press release issued on Friday, the Basel-based media entrepreneur will manage Schweizer Bauer together with the Ökonomische und Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft des Kantons Bern (OGG), which will continue to hold a 51% stake in the specialist newspaper. The contracts with all 27 members of the editorial and sales team will continue unchanged.

Der Schweizer Bauer was founded in 1846 by the OGG and was managed by it for almost 150 years. In 1992, Espace Media took over 49 percent of the trade newspaper as well as the management. The leading Swiss agricultural newspaper is published twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday with a circulation of 30,841 copies.

As part of the merger with Edipresse Suisse, the Tamedia media group decided in April 2011 to divest its radio and TV stations and specialist media. In mid-August 2011, Tamedia had already announced the sale of Automobil Revue and Revue Automobile to Dominique Hiltbrunner. The parties have agreed not to disclose the details of the transfer of the stake in Schweizer Bauer.

A photograph taken in Yemen has been named the best press photo of last year. The photo, which won the 2011 World Press Photo Award, shows a woman in a black full-face veil holding an injured relative in her arms.

The photo was taken by Samuel Aranda from Spain. He took it last October in the Yemeni capital Sanaa in a mosque where opponents of President Ali Abdallah Saleh had set up a field hospital.

"The photo stands for the entire region," said jury member Koyo Kouoh in Amsterdam, explaining the award in the world's most important photo competition. "It presents Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria - simply everything that happened during the Arab Spring." The special thing about the photo is that it shows "a private, intimate side" of a significant development. Aranda was in Yemen on assignment for the New York Times.

The image series gives patients, doctors, researchers and other stakeholders a chance to have their say.

"Further cost-cutting measures not ruled out"

In an interview with the Swiss business magazine *Bilanz*, Ringier CEO Christian Unger discusses the Blick Group, the company's business in China, conflicts of interest, and potential cost-cutting measures.

Although two or three titles in China have been loss-making, Ringier is profitable in China, says Ringer CEO Christian Unger in an interview with Bilanz magazine. However, he added, Switzerland will continue to play an essential role - in the longer term, the company is aiming for a three-way split of total revenues: one-third from the core publishing business in Switzerland, one-third from Swiss and international activities from the digital sector, entertainment and the new markets or with new models such as ticketing, events or radio - and one-third from the Eastern Europe joint venture with Axel Springer.

Ringier is clearly a modern media group, Unger answers the question of whether the company is now an entertainment or a media group. The discussion about Ringier's role is only being held in Switzerland because the strategy is new for Switzerland. There are three pillars: publishing business, digital activities and entertainment. Asked whether he sees no danger of conflicts of interest, Unger says it's primarily a matter of "playing our value chain intelligently and offering our users the greatest possible added value across all our channels and services." But clear demarcations are also needed, for example, journalistic independence is a key asset that is very important to Ringier.

"More full-cream journalism"

In the last three months, Blick has reported 25 times on the hit duo Florian Ast and Francine Jordi, the tabloid simultaneously acts as their concert sponsor, and the Ringier subsidiary Ticketcorner sells the concert tickets. Bilanz wants to know whether this does not harbor any conflicts of interest. Unger replies that this is a good example of the value chain. But the individual companies mentioned would work decentrally, and the editorial staff would decide autonomously which topics they would include and how often.

Bilanz asks whether the goal set by Michael Ringier of becoming more political and less German has been achieved. Michael Ringier literally demanded "more full-frame journalism," says Unger. This has happened. Business reporting, for example, is a good example: Every day, there would be "excellently researched articles" on a double-page spread, in which business topics would be taken up "in a generally understandable way, but at a high level. And they also want to improve on the subject of politics: The aim is to explain the processes and issues of politics to people in a simple but exciting way and also to look behind the scenes.

Further cost-cutting measures not ruled out

Ringier has cut costs by around CHF 100 million in the last three years. When asked about further savings potential, Unger says that the company is looking very closely at the possibilities. The aim is to continue to improve the result, and further cost reductions will also be made. But they are also clearly aiming for growth.

In the Swissprinters area, Ringier is cutting staff and concentrating sites. Unger fears that the print shop could lose further orders due to the strength of the Swiss franc. He cannot rule out further measures - he expects 2012 to be a "challenging year" for Ringier overall.
