Study: Large Swiss companies on the social web

91 percent of the largest Swiss companies are now involved in the social web. Facebook has held its own, with YouTube following close behind and showing the highest growth rate.

This is shown by a follow-up study based on Barbara Kunert's master's thesis at the HWZ Hochschule für Wirtschaft Zürich. The social media engagement of Swiss companies has increased by a significant 29 percent compared to 2011. Facebook is most frequently maintained and has maintained its position as the leader with 68 percent. Youtube follows close behind at 66 percent. With a 38 percent increase over the previous year, the video platform shows the highest growth rate of all social media channels. Twitter has doubled its activity to 53 percent.

A strong change can be observed in human resources. In 68 percent of large Swiss companies, corresponding employees are responsible for social media activities (plus 29 percent). Overall, 57 percent of the members of the management board are involved in social media.

Surprisingly, 36 percent of the largest Swiss companies nevertheless state that their executive board members are not interested in playing an active role. The departments most actively involved in social media activities are Communications, Marketing and Human Resources. Customer Service is only in fourth place by a wide margin. There is potential for Sales and Product Management departments.

While only 22 percent of large Swiss companies had a written social media strategy in 2011, this figure has more than doubled to 51 percent within a year. Nevertheless, the use of social media is still unplanned at 40 percent of companies.

Concern about loss of control decreases

A year ago, the biggest weakness of social media was the fear of losing control, which accounted for 62 percent of respondents, but in 2012, this fear declined by 9 percent. At the moment, the main concerns are the time required for maintenance (57 percent) and the high level of resources required in terms of personnel and finances (55 percent).

Why social media? Image and reputation building tops the list at 87 percent (up 35 percent). Positioning as an employer brand holds its own in second place with 74 percent. This corresponds to an increase of 15 percent. Dialog with target groups takes third place with 68 percent.

The study is based on an online survey of the 141 largest Swiss companies conducted in December 2011, in which 53 companies participated. The detailed follow-up study "Swiss Large Companies on the Social Web 2012" by the HWZ Hochschule für Wirtschaft Zürich, Hutter Consult and Barbara Kunert, as well as the infographic, are freely available at Fh-hwz.ch/fsmm and Socialmediastudy.ch.

Italy: Il Manifesto fights against the end

Italy's long-standing left-wing daily newspaper, *Il Manifesto*, is fighting to survive. Under pressure from significant cuts to government subsidies for daily newspapers, the independent communist newspaper—founded in 1971—now faces closure.

The Ministry of Industry in Rome has already initiated proceedings to forcibly dissolve the cooperative, which has published the daily newspaper since 1971. The Monti government has given the Leaf has not yet confirmed the financing it needs to survive. Falling advertising revenue and a circulation at a record low of 20,000 copies have severely weakened the daily newspaper in recent months. The 60 journalists and administrative staff have not been paid since last September. The paper has been heavily in debt for years.

The paper's editor-in-chief, Norma Rangeri, described the dissolution of the cooperative that publishes the paper as a "political offense". However, the journalists want to continue the fight and are calling for an extraordinary campaign to save the daily newspaper. They appealed to readers to actively support the paper in order to avert its closure at the last minute.

"We have already experienced many crises in our 40-year history, but this one is the most serious, also because of the political environment in which we find ourselves," said the editor-in-chief. The paper has lost many readers due to the crisis, which is eating into Italians' income. "We can no longer do it alone, we need you!", the appeal reads. (SDA/APA)

Last but not least: Funny collapsing cooling towers

Collapsing cooling towers aren't usually very funny. Unless, that is, they have faces. Then—despite the serious subject matter—they take on a comical twist.

They drink coffee, chat, wear moustaches or carry walking sticks, and otherwise behave more like humans than cool towers. They are distributed by the British eco-energy company Ecotricity via YouTube.

Glaswerk Design: New appearance for "Coming-Out - Mittendrin

In 2011, the organizations Aids-Hilfe Schweiz (AHS), LOS, and Pink Cross decided to update the layout and content of the brochure «Coming Out – Right in the Middle,» which had been in print since 1996, for gay and bisexual youth as well as transgender people.

Brigitta Javurek, who already realized the two successful brochures "Hey Boys!" and "Hey Girls" for AHS, was entrusted with the project management. Glaswerk Design was responsible for the redesign of the layout. Encouraging statements are emphasized and are also intended to provide orientation in terms of design. Prominently placed quotes from homosexual and bisexual young people, trans girls and boys, together with coherent images, offer plenty of space for identification. An extensive range of addresses of reputable organizations rounds off the brochure.

With the handy DIN A5 format, Glaswerk Design also wants to make the brochure a discreet, contemporary companion that assists the young target groups in coming out without any raised forefinger, but with the greatest respect and understanding.

Ringier: Rumors of round of cost-cutting intensify

There are growing signs that Ringier is facing another major round of cost-cutting. According to the newspaper *Der Sonntag*, figures are reportedly being circulated behind closed doors within the company itself, fueling employees’ fears of a wave of layoffs.

There was talk of having to cut ten percent across the Group. The statement made by Ringier CEO Christian Unger in the "News" section did not exactly help to reassure staff. Interview with the business magazine Bilanzthat the company will make further cost reductions. Furthermore, Ringier employees are said to repeatedly encounter employees of a strategic consulting firm at the company's headquarters.

Der Sonntag asked Ringier spokesman Edi Estermann whether it was true that the Group wanted to make linear savings of ten percent. Ringier is constantly and consistently reviewing the efficiency of its business units and various holdings, Estermann replied. As part of the Group-wide increase in profitability, Ringier is currently examining ways to improve efficiency. Ringier is doing this in an effort to "grow and diversify. And thus become an attractive bride for the German Springer publishing house? asks Der Sonntag. Estermann said nothing about this.

Last but not least: Help, the Pizol bunnies are coming

The Pizol-Häsli recently provided entertainment in Zurich. Packed with skis, snowboards and sledges, they set off from the main station.

Some passers-by pulled out their cell phones with smiles on their faces and took their own personal snapshots, according to a statement from Pizolbahnen. The hairy mascots even found some snow. It may not have been as much as on the Pizol, but it was enough to strap on the skis. Jööööhhh, how cute - to cuddle, scratch and snack on!

The Sun: Five more journalists arrested

About eight months after the tabloid *News of the World* ceased publication, the justice system has turned its attention more sharply toward Britain's largest newspaper, *The Sun*. Over the weekend, five more reporters from the paper were arrested.

In addition, three men were arrested, including a member of the army, the police said. According to media reports, the other two are a police officer and an employee of the Ministry of Defense. Four Sun journalists were arrested just two weeks ago. The most recent arrests relate to suspicion of bribery, corruption and abuse of office, as well as aiding and abetting. The men were released on bail shortly afterwards and are due to appear in court again in March and May. The arrests are a further highlight in the affair surrounding media entrepreneur Murdoch's empire in the UK. Last July, the Sunday newspaper News of the World was shut down. Prior to this, new allegations had come to light in the long-running affair surrounding the illegal tapping of telephone mailboxes by the paper's reporters.

Editor-in-chief "shocked"

British media reported on Sunday that Murdoch had assured his employees that the Sun was not in danger and that he would not give it up or sell it. The 80-year-old is expected to travel to London next week. Sun editor-in-chief Dominic Mohan said on Saturday that he was "shocked" by the arrests. However, he said he was determined to lead the newspaper through these "difficult times".

According to News Corporation, the company itself has passed on information to the investigators of the "Elveden" special commission. "News Corporation stands by its commitment to ensure that unacceptable news gathering practices used by individuals in the past are not repeated," it said.

Highest-circulation paper

Two weeks ago, a police officer from Scotland Yard and four reporters and editors from The Sun newspaper were also arrested on suspicion of corruption. The investigations are ongoing. All five have since been released on bail.

Since its purchase by Murdoch's News Corporation group in 1969, the Sun has become the UK's highest-circulation newspaper with a focus on sex and scandal. The paper sells around 2.5 million copies a day. (SDA/DPA/AFP)
