Last but not least: CNN collects Ecosphere tweets

Last year, CNN International launched the Ecosphere project in collaboration with the Berlin-based agency Heimat. The CNN Ecosphere visualizes the global discussion on the topics of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, and invites viewers worldwide to participate in the discussion on Rio+20 topics via Twitter.

Tweets with the hashtag #RIO20 create a digital ecosystem in real time, in which every #RIO20 tweet stimulates the growth of a tree. Each tree represents a specific topic within the discussion. The size, color and growth of the trees give users a fascinating insight into the discussion surrounding the conference.

The CNN Ecosphere project was launched last year as part of the UN World Climate Conference in Durban. By the end of the conference, the Ecosphere had already counted 227,000 tweets. The opinions and thoughts of Twitter users can be seen online in the Ecosphere. The Ecosphere is also part of the June edition of "Road to RioA Green City Journey". As part of the program, CNN went on a trip to Rio in the run-up to the conference and reported on sustainability projects from the United Arab Emirates, India, China, the USA and Mexico. In June, the program is dedicated to the topics of the UN Rio+20 conference.

For tweets to become part of the Ecosphere, they must contain the hashtag #RIO20. Tweets can be posted directly via the Tweetbox on Cnn-ecosphere.com are sent via Twitter.com or via any Twitter application - both on the computer and on mobile devices.

The Ecosphere trees
The Ecosphere collects thousands of tweets from all over the world and visualizes them in a unique animation: Tweets with the hashtag #Rio20 create a digital garden that becomes visible when the microsite is called up. Individual tweets are displayed by moving the mouse over the leaves of the trees. By clicking within the ecosphere, you can move around the 3D animation and zoom in on individual trees to see their content. You can also navigate through the Ecosphere by clicking in the menu at the bottom of the screen.

Trees grow when one or more people tweet about a specific topic with the hashtag #RIO20. Once the system has registered the hashtag #RIO20, it searches for further keywords in the tweet. The Ecosphere can identify up to five different keywords. If the tweet can be thematically assigned to a tree, it appears at this point in the Ecosphere. If the tweet does not relate to any of the existing topics, it appears as a seed on the surface of the Ecosphere. If other Twitter users then also pick up on this topic, a new plant grows from the seed. A total of up to 30 trees can exist in the Ecosphere at the same time, each representing a specific topic. The Ecosphere changes depending on the intensity of the discussion: If a topic is no longer discussed, the tree dies and makes room for a new topic. The growth of the trees is modeled on natural plant growth: Based on the content, an algorythm of the Ecosphere continuously calculates the height, circumference, color and shape of each tree, simulating organic plant growth.

The CNN Ecosphere Project is an initiative of CNN International. Advertising agency: Heimat, Berlin. Production: Stink Digital, London / New York. Digital design: Minivegas, Amsterdam.

Beginning in 2013, Marcel Kohler will also join Tamedia’s executive management as head of the new 20 Minuten division.

Ueli Eckstein will manage the division from Bern. Within the division, the daily newspapers BZ Berner Zeitung, BZ Langenthaler Tagblatt, Der Bund, Tages-Anzeiger, Zürcher Unterländer and Zürichsee-Zeitung as well as the shareholdings BO Berner Oberländer, TT Thuner Tagblatt, Der Landbote and Zürcher Oberländer will benefit from an exchange of experience and synergies. The merger of the two divisions, which have separated from their radio and TV activities in recent months, will also enable savings to be made at management level, Tamedia said in a press release. The editors-in-chief of the daily newspapers will continue to report directly to the company management, as will the publishing directors. In journalistic matters, the editors-in-chief will continue to report directly to the publisher Pietro Supino.

Ueli Eckstein joined the Tamedia media group in 2009 as Head of Espace Media. In the last three years, he has been responsible for the implementation of the collaboration between the Bund and Tages-Anzeiger, the sale of Capital FM and TeleBärn and the forthcoming integration of the BZ Langenthaler Tagblatt into the Berner Zeitung group. He was previously deputy CEO at AZ Medien.

The current Head of Media Zurich, Rolf Bollmann, will reach his normal retirement age in July 2013 and will then continue to work for Tamedia on a mandate basis. He has been a member of the Management Board since 2005 and was previously the founding managing director of the commuter newspaper 20 Minuten.

The commuter newspapers of 20 Minuten in German-speaking Switzerland, French-speaking Switzerland, Ticino and Luxembourg, the people magazine Friday and all digital offerings of 20 Minuten Online, Tilllate.com and Lessentiel.lu will become an independent division as of January 1, 2013. The creation of the new division reflects the importance of 20 Minuten within the Tamedia media group, according to the Tamedia press release. The division will be headed by the current Managing Director Marcel Kohler, who will also become a member of Tamedia's Management Board.

Marcel Kohler has headed the 20 Minuten media network since 2006. Over the past six years, Marcel Kohler has made a significant contribution to the development of the commuter newspapers 20 minutes and 20 minuti and to strengthening the digital offerings of 20 Minuten Online. BZ Basel expands editorial team

BZ Basel expands its editorial team. In addition, a campaign is launched to position the daily newspaper as independent and liberal.

Already last year, the Basel-Stadt and Sport departments were strengthened by three positions and the Basel team of Der Sonntag was filled with four people. Now, four new positions will be created for the BZ Basel in the departments Basel-City, Basel-Country, Economy and Culture, as AZ Medien announced on Tuesday. The reason was the positive feedback from readers on the daily newspaper, which has been published since January.

In addition, as of the beginning of June, the editorial headquarters were moved from Liestal to new, larger editorial offices in the center of Basel, at Kornhausgasse 5, according to the statement. From June 18, 2012, an advertising campaign will also be launched to position BZ Basel as a liberal and independent daily newspaper. These messages will be communicated via billboards, radio spots, advertisements and online advertising. The campaign was realized by the CR Basel agency.

Pro Sieben Sat.1: Channel planned for older audience

The media group Pro Sieben Sat.1 no longer wants to concentrate solely on younger viewers.

"We are working on the development of a new, free-to-air television channel. Specifically, we are discussing a channel for older target groups, who are increasingly being courted by the advertising market," CEO Thomas Ebeling told Handelsblatt (Tuesday edition).

The aim is to reach new advertising customers with the channel. "This has already worked very well with women with Sixx," said Ebeling. With the new channel, Pro Sieben Sat.1 would primarily be competing with ARD and ZDF, which achieve high market shares among older viewers. The media group currently has four free-to-air TV channels in Germany: ProSieben, Sat.1, Kabel 1 and Sixx. (SDA/DAPD)

Hipp: "cream puff" for the most audacious advertising lie of 2012

According to the consumer organization Foodwatch, Hipp committed the most brazen advertising lie of 2012 in its marketing of children’s teas and was awarded the «Golden Windbag»—a negative prize—for doing so.

In the self-initiated online vote, more than 44,000 consumers (34.1 percent) voted for Hipp's granulated sugar teas "Fruits", "Forest Fruits" and "Apple Balm", as Foodwatch announced on Tuesday. A total of 129,229 people cast their vote on the Abgespeist.de website.

The children's tea contains the equivalent of two and a half sugar cubes per 2 deciliters, according to the report. However, experts recommend only giving children unsweetened teas. It would be irresponsible to recommend such a drink.

Hipp had already announced in May that it would be withdrawing its sugar-containing granulated teas from the market by the end of the year and would in future be offering children's teas with the tooth-friendly sugar substitute isomaltulose. These teas are already available for children under the age of one.

The company reacted with incomprehension to being awarded the "Golden Windbag" for the most audacious advertising lie. The sugar content of the products is stated on the packaging "transparently and clearly recognizable for the consumer", it said in a statement. In addition, the teas comply with the strict regulations of the Dietary Guidelines, which all products for children under the age of three must adhere to. Hipp accused Foodwatch of unsettling consumers.

The "Golden Windbag" was awarded for the fourth time. Five products were nominated and could be voted for from May 22 to June 18. Viva Vital minced meat preparation from Netto (27.5 percent) came second in the list of label frauds. In third place was Becel pro activ from Unilever (22.2 percent) ahead of Clausthaler from Radeberger (10.1 percent). (SDA/DAPD).

Last but not least: iPads for the bus drivers

Verkehrsbetriebe Zürichsee und Oberland (VZO) is giving each of its drivers a personal iPad. But this is not for the pleasure of the employees. On the contrary.

The iPad is equipped with an app specially developed by the VZO. The aim is to provide drivers with information and further training on the road - during waiting times, of course. Previously, drivers were trained for two days a year on customer service, service quality, driving style, safety and fares. In addition, employees had to check the notice board every day before starting work to find out about changes to routes, postponed stops and so on. All of this information is now stored on the central computer on each iPad and updated daily via radio before the start of the service. The driver can now read the operational instructions, study plans and maps undisturbed at any time and anywhere or while waiting on duty en route and ask the operations control center if anything is unclear.

Incidentally, the VZO does not specify when the iPad should be used. The daily duty roster only indicates to the staff at which final stops time for the use of the iPad is recommended. (Editor's note: But woe betide anyone who does not adhere to the recommendations and scrolls through a 20-minute book instead!) In addition to company information, "funny articles, internal video messages or photos from the last company event" are also available. And, probably even more important for staff: downloading private apps or music is permitted. A good thing!

Euro RSCG Zurich: Campaign developed for AWS

Euro RSCG Zurich has developed a poster campaign for Aussenwerbung Schweiz (AWS), which is intended to sum up the benefits of poster advertising and thus provide proof that poster advertising must work.

The core idea of the campaign for the umbrella organization of companies and individuals interested in outdoor advertising in Switzerland is to stage the poster as a large medium. The size of the poster stands for the great potential of brand success. This is visualized with small but highly successful products that - reproduced almost in their original size - demonstrate the power of poster advertising. All under the motto "For big things. The poster."

Icons of the brand world such as Victorinox pocket knives, Haribo Gold Bears, BIC razors and Duracell batteries were won as protagonists for the campaign. The subjects can be seen throughout Switzerland with immediate effect.

Responsible at AWS: Mélanie Giger (Managing Director), Markus Ehrle (APG|SGA), Lena Martschenko (Clear Channel). Responsible at Euro RSCG Zurich: Frank Bodin (overall responsibility), Axel Eckstein (CD), Remo Rudolf (graphics), Niklaus Huwyler, Marcel Mägerle (consulting), Cara-Anne Specker (art buying).

WVC: Campaign for Observer Nature realized

Since May 4, 2012, *Beobachter Natur* has been published with a new look and new design. The WVC agency created an advertising campaign for the occasion.

The new claim is intended to get to the heart of the innovations: Beobachter Natur is "the surprising environmental and knowledge magazine". WVC had the task of visually emphasizing this statement in a series of advertisements, as the agency writes in a press release. In addition, a younger and more female audience was to be addressed. The diversity of the new magazine is supported and communicated with three advertising subjects. Surprising motifs show unusual combinations from different subject areas and reflect the spirit of discovery and the new sensuality.

Responsible at Beobachter Natur: Thomas Knell (Head of Marketing), Barbara Novak (Product Manager). Responsible at WVC: Kurt Wettstein (overall responsibility, CD), Stefan Fleischlin (art direction, graphics), Kevin Wettstein (DTP).

High voltage: Day families recruited for the GFZ

The Hochspannung agency carried out a recruitment campaign for child care providers and host families on behalf of the Zurich Nonprofit Women's Association.

The Gemeinnützige Frauenverein Zürich has been offering professional daycare for children in Zurich daycare centers for over 125 years, as Hochspannung writes in a press release. For the past two years, the GFZ has also offered the option of placing children in daycare families on a daily basis. To ensure that there are always enough places for children, the Zurich agency Hochspannung was commissioned with a campaign. The target group is mothers who were previously in employment and are willing to open up their families to look after other children on a daily basis.

A series of unusual job advertisements developed a high level of excitement. With the invitation to consider a career as a childminder for once instead of the usual career in the business world, interested parties are drawn to the Website of the GFZ daycare center. The subjects developed for buzzwords such as "brainstorming" or "business lunch" translate common business slang into the world of children.

Responsible at Gemeinnütziger Frauenverein Zürich: Gioia Neuenschwander-Bozzato (Head of Communications), Michelle Castelli (Head of Daycare Families). Responsible at Hochspannung Werbeagentur Zurich: Tom Fäh, Noemi Fraefel, Anigna Groebli, Marco Huber, Matthew Katumba, Julian Murer, Alex Taiganidis, Katja Wölfel.
