Sunday newspaper cooperates with The Economist

The Sonntagszeitung and the British news magazine The Economist have signed an exclusive exclusive cooperation agreement for Switzerland.

Starting Sunday, July 2, 2012, the Sonntagszeitung will expand its coverage of international topics and adopt the best articles from the renowned British weekly on a weekly basis, according to a statement. Selected articles and analyses on world politics, economics and finance will be translated and published by Sonntagszeitung exclusively for Switzerland.

"We are pleased to be able to offer our readers reading material on international topics that is among the best in the world, over and above the articles we have researched ourselves. We are consciously investing in journalistic content: On the one hand, by greatly expanding our resources for investigative journalism at home with the creation of the new research desk in Bern. On the other hand, by working with the strongest journalistic talents at the international level and achieving concrete added value for our readership," says Martin Spieler, Editor-in-Chief of the Sonntagszeitung, about the new collaboration.

The contractual agreements stipulate that the articles taken over can be shortened or expanded to include Swiss aspects, as Spieler told SDA in response to an inquiry. A mutual exchange of articles is not planned for the time being.

AWS strengthens generic marketing activity

The Swiss Outdoor Advertising Association (AWS) has stepped up its category marketing activities, launched a poster campaign for the poster medium, and unveiled a new, redesigned website.

In collaboration with the Euro RSCG advertising agency in Zurich, the Swiss Outdoor Advertising Association (AWS) has developed a poster campaign that sums up the advantages of poster advertising in a simple and striking way, thus proving how poster advertising should work. The core idea of the campaign is to stage the poster as a large medium. The size of the poster stands for the great potential of brand success, the association said in a statement on Monday. This is visualized with small products that - almost in their original size - vividly demonstrate the power of poster advertising. All under the motto "For great things. The poster.".

Icons of the brand world such as Victorinox pocket knives, Haribo Gold Bears, BIC razors and Duracell batteries were won as protagonists for the campaign. The subjects can now be seen throughout Switzerland in various formats as well as on e-boards and e-panels. At the same time as the campaign was launched, AWS also revised its website and brought it up to date on the subject of outdoor advertising.

Seed: With Cruiser and Bella off through the middle

Seed, in collaboration with Boutiq, has created an animated film in the tradition of Pixar and others. With this film, Suva is raising awareness about safe cycling at roundabouts.

Cruiser and Bella are the main characters in the animated film "Ab durch die Mitte!", which Suva is launching as part of its bicycle campaign. The theme is safe traffic circles. The rule here is that bicycles are allowed to ride in the middle of the lane on single-lane traffic circles. Today, most cyclists and car drivers are not aware of this rule. Many cyclists therefore ride on the right edge of the traffic circle. By doing so, they put themselves in danger because they are easily overlooked by motorists.

In "Off through the middle!" Cruiser has to witness Bella suffering a serious accident in the traffic circle. Fortunately, she is quickly patched up. But when she drives towards a traffic circle again, she gets scared. Cruiser, however, finds the solution: get into the lane before the traffic circle and then off through the middle!

The film was directed by Seed and produced by Boutiq under the direction of Mike Huber.

Suva is showing the animated film on the Internet and at events and training sessions. A trailer version will also be shown in selected open-air cinemas this summer.

The trick for fathers

Starting now, Spick is no longer just for kids—it’s for adults, too. Big Spick is designed for dads and offers topics and ideas related to outdoor adventures, entertainment, and games, as well as parenting and role-related issues.

Back in March, the Künzler Bachmann publishing house launched the Spick children's magazine on the occasion of its 30th anniversary. Launch of "Big Spick - the magazine for fathers" announced. Originally planned for May, the first issue of the magazine for Spick readers' fathers will now be published at the end of June.

The 80-page booklet aims to show men why it's fun to be a father. It provides ideas on how to spend time with your children in a playful and creative way and not only offers topics relating to action and outdoor adventures, but also sheds light on parenting issues. "Big Spick is designed to encourage you to experience new things with your children, have fun together and occasionally do something for the child in you," says publisher Max Künzler. It is designed to meet the needs of modern fathers who want to be together with their children and nurture their relationship. "A magazine especially for fathers is new and unique in the media landscape," says Christian Kaiser, Editor-in-Chief of Big Spick, commenting on the launch.

The Big Spick relies on a mix of journalistic forms: Features, portraits, reports, witty columns and interviews. For the first issue, for example, Bänz Friedli, "Hausmann der Nation", has written an amusing plea for the job of househusband. Music journalist Reto Aschwanden brought the bandleaders of three Swiss children's bands together and discussed with them how politically incorrect children's songs can be. Cabaret artist and children's book author Franz Hohler gives tips on reading aloud and storytelling. And the Biel poet Michael Stauffer, who can be heard on Radio DRS 1 as "Professor Hämmerli", plays the role of advice uncle in educational matters for Big Spick.

The magazine is published in a print run of 55,000 copies and will be available at newsstands from June 21. The Big Spick will also be included in the July issue of Spick and the family magazine Kidy Swissfamily.

Interested parties can download the first issue on Bigspick.ch order free of charge.

Last but not least: Google urged to censor

Last year, the number of requests from governments asking Google to remove critical comments continued to rise. As in previous years, most of these requests targeted political comments.

The number of such requests also increased significantly in Western democracies between the beginning of July and the end of December 2011. According to SDA, the US internet company writes this in its semi-annual transparency report. An increase in such requests is not only alarming because freedom of expression is under threat, said Google expert Dorothy Chou at the presentation of the report, "but also because some of these requests come from Western democracies that are not typically suspected of censorship".

Following the report, the number of requests from the USA to delete politically offensive material from Google and its video portal YouTube doubled. However, countries such as China are not included in the report. There, unpopular entries on the internet are blocked by hand.

The majority of requests to delete politically offensive material were comments, cartoons and videos that were considered defamatory, insulting or derogatory towards monarchs, politicians and institutions such as the army.

Should these censorship requests therefore be justified, as they are increasingly coming from democratic countries that otherwise do not tend to apply censorship? Or have monarchs, politicians and institutions such as the army simply increasingly swapped their "mirror on the wall" for the internet?
