Adjustments to Radio SRF 1 and Radio SRF 2 Kultur

In the course of convergence and in view of the launch of the new brand world, SRF has has revised its program profiles. DRS 1 has already been continuously updating its programming since mid-2012; DRS 2 is implementing a series of programming adjustments with the name change.

Radio SRF 1: more topicality, in-depth coverage and interaction

DRS 1 and Radio SRF 1 (from 16 December 2012) have been gradually adapting their programming since mid-2012, as detailed in a press release. The new content and forms of implementation are geared towards the everyday life and usage habits of the audience. In addition to rock/pop and country, primarily from the 1950s to the 1990s, the music profile now includes individual titles from modern German pop, instrumental music, selected new releases as well as chansons and canzoni.

In the morning program (5 a.m. to 9 a.m.), the information services have been strengthened, including short news, service and regional journals on the half hours. The accompanying program is also more topical and in-depth: morning guests can be heard regularly, interaction with the audience plays a greater role and the press review has been expanded into a media review. The detailed information on the hour, the consumer magazine "Espresso", the morning story and the popular morning game have remained.

Also new to the daily program since September 2012 are the cooking section "À point" at 11.40 am, a cultural magazine with current topics in the afternoon and the portrait section "Herzblut" after 3 pm. The "Treffpunkt" from 9 to 11 a.m., the "Ratgeber" after 11 a.m. and the radio play on Mondays from 2 to 3 p.m. will remain. The audience will also be more involved in the daily program, contributing feedback, opinions, knowledge and stories. On Sunday afternoons from 2 to 3 p.m., the literary magazine "Buchzeichen" ("Bookmarks") sets a new focus. This is followed by the new program "People & Horizons".

Over the course of 2013, Radio SRF 1 and Radio SRF 3 will revise their 4 to 7 p.m. schedules - with the aim of offering more in-depth information from 4 p.m. and increasing the overall frequency of information and services. Radio SRF 1 will also redesign the late evening from 10 p.m., with a focus on entertainment, accompaniment and audience participation.

Radio SRF 2 Kultur: the contemporary cultural radio station

From December 16, 2012, Radio SRF 2 Kultur will offer more up-to-date reporting as well as analysis and in-depth coverage from the culture, music and knowledge departments. The changes affect the broadcasting times when a particularly large number of listeners can be reached: the morning (6 to 9 a.m.) and the evening before (4 to 7 p.m.). The renowned background formats such as "Kontext", "Reflexe" and "Passage" will remain, as will the special interest programs for new music, jazz, science and religion as well as the radio drama and literature offerings. The music focus of Radio SRF 2 Kultur will continue to be on classical music and jazz; the spectrum will be specifically expanded in the evening before. Longer works and concert broadcasts will also continue to characterize the music profile of Radio SRF 2 Kultur.

From December 16, 2012, the Srf.ch/kultur platform will offer new multimedia access to SRF's entire cultural offering.

The renewed program of Radio SRF 2 Kultur at a glance:

In the morning (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., Monday to Friday), Radio SRF 2 Kultur is significantly expanding its cultural journalism program: Reporting on current topics from society, science, religion and art will be strengthened - embedded in a diverse classical music program (known from the previous "Mattinata").

The morning program (9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., Monday to Friday) remains largely unchanged: The half-hour formats "Kontext" and "Reflexe" offer detailed background and classification on the entire spectrum of topics from culture and knowledge. At 12 noon, there is a summary of the morning's cultural news, which is also offered as a daily podcast.

The evening before (4 to 7 p.m.) expands the previous jazz-influenced music profile of the "Apéro" to include blues, singer/songwriter and world music. There will also be more current affairs reports from the fields of society, science, religion and art. World music remains the third musical color on Radio SRF 2 Kultur alongside classical music and jazz, and can also be heard in the "Klangfenster" (19.45, Monday to Friday) and in "Musik der Welt" (Friday, 21.00).

The special interest programs will largely retain their previous slots, such as "Diskothek im Zwei" (Monday, 8 pm), "Fiori musicali" (Monday, 10.35 pm), "Neue Musik im Konzert" (Wednesday, 10.35 pm), "CH Musik" (Thursday, 10.35 pm), "Jazz Collection" and "Jazz aktuell" (Tuesday, 8 and 9 pm), "Wissenschaftsmagazin" (Saturday, 12.40 pm) and "52 beste Bücher" (Sunday, 11 am). The radio play dates (Wednesday, 8 p.m. and Friday, 9 p.m.) will also be retained, as will the "Hörpunkt", which interrupts the usual program on the 2nd of each month in favour of an all-day exploration of a major topic.

SRF: new brand world, new web presence

Starting December 16, the entire lineup will be clearly presented under the SRF umbrella. On the one hand, the new radio and television channel brands will be launched; on the other hand, Srf.ch will go live, replacing the previously separate radio and TV websites.

The media world is changing rapidly: More and more offerings are competing for the audience's attention, and audiences are increasingly using media according to individual preferences, mobile and time-independent. It is therefore important for SRF to be recognizable as a strong brand, a media beacon, on all vectors and channels, the company writes in a statement. Hansruedi Schoch, Head of Programming: "By linking all our offerings to the corporate brand throughout, we are sending a strong signal of commonality. In a media landscape that is characterized by a high degree of change, the SRF brand offers the audience both orientation and a home - whether on radio, TV or online."

According to the statement, the new branding ensures the perception of the overall offering "from a single source," but at the same time resumes strongly anchored previous brand elements, ensures the necessary distinctiveness between radio and television brands and does justice to the independence of the various program profiles: The individual brands, especially those of the radios, are each to be distinguished by their own identity, and the logos feature different colors and an individual emotionality. On the night of December 15-16, 2012, SRF will implement the rebranding on all channels; from December 16, audiences will therefore encounter the new brand names and logos.

Facilitated online access

Also on December 16, SRF goes online with a completely revamped web presence: Srf.ch bundles the online content of radio and television under a common address. This means that all of SRF's multimedia offerings will also be consistently linked to the umbrella brand. To help users find their way around the new site as quickly as possible, they will be redirected from the previous radio and TV addresses (Drs.ch and Sf.tv) directly to Srf.ch. SRF's new web presence strengthens the focus on audio and video. The home page offers an overview of the most important, up-to-date multimedia content, as well as service information on weather and traffic at the click of a button. The topic sections News, Sports, Culture, Entertainment, Consumer, Health, Knowledge & Digital facilitate access according to individual interests, as do the entry pages of the six radio channels. The overview pages are arranged according to journalistic criteria.

Alternatively, the "Social View" view can be used to display topics that have been accessed or commented on particularly often. srf.ch also specifically integrates interactive elements such as Twitter messages and special explanatory graphics. Hansruedi Schoch, Head of Programming: "Srf.ch reflects the changing audience needs and the evolving convergent journalism at SRF. We used the merger of the radio and TV sites to review the entire multimedia offering and to position ourselves as a broadcaster in line with the times online as well. Our web presence, however, is a dynamic offering that should continuously evolve and also provide room for the experimental and unexpected."

Sodastream: Advertising censorship in England

The British Advertising Standards Authority has banned a TV commercial by Sodastream. It interprets the advertisement for the sparkling water maker as a «denigration» of the beverage industry.

Sodastream, the market leader in drinking water bubblers, has launched its first global TV campaign. The claim: "If you love the bubbles, set them free" is intended to draw attention to the waste and lack of sustainability on the part of major drinks manufacturers. When the Sodastream machine is activated in the commercial, thousands of conventional pet bottles burst. At the end, the viewer is told that they can save 2000 bottles a year with Sodastream.

The campaign was created and implemented by the Common agency, the commercial was broadcast extensively in the USA and has already been viewed over a million times on YouTube. In contrast, the Sodastream campaign was less well received in England. Clearcast, an organization that checks TV advertising before it is broadcast and is closely networked with the largest TV stations, decided to ban the ad. The reasoning: People would understand the advertisement more as a request not to buy drinks in supermarkets and less as an opportunity to protect the environment through Sodastream. The commercial denigrates the bottled drinks market.

Daniel Birnbaum, CEO of Sodastream, describes the reasoning as absurd. It has probably not often happened that the media has mobilized against an environmental protection idea in order to protect a traditional industry. Of course, the beverage bottle industry is being challenged, but offering a pioneering alternative has nothing to do with denigration. After all, an iPod advertisement does not denigrate the Walkman, nor does a car advertisement denigrate the horse and cart. Of the 629 billion drinks bottles produced worldwide, one billion are thrown away every day - the Sodastream ad shows people that there are smarter ways to enjoy soft drinks.

Publicitas industry event confirms: Real-time advertising is gaining in importance

On Tuesday, the 18th P-Forum took place, focusing on the topic «Real-Time Advertising—Evolution or Revolution.» The event explored the changes and implications of real-time advertising. As part of the event, the premium inventory marketplace «The Mark» was launched.

Beat Roeschlin, CEO of Publicitas, opened the industry event at Zurich's Kino Arena Filmcity and welcomed participants from the media industry to the 18th P-Forum on the topic of real-time advertising (RTA). In technical jargon, this refers to the data-supported automation of online advertising (Werbewoche.ch reported). Media providers can thus better monetize their advertising inventory. Advertising clients have the opportunity to evaluate advertising contacts before purchasing, taking into account the advertising space and viewer. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), more than 25 percent of display advertising in Europe will be sold via RTA by 2015.

Arndt Groth, CEO of Publigroupe, sees real-time advertising as a tool for increasing efficiency in the planning of advertising campaigns, as detailed in a press release. Media decisions can be permanently optimized based on real-time data analysis. "Those who analyze the right data faster are ahead of the competition," said Sacha Berlik, CEO of mexad, who spoke about RTA from the perspective of a specialist service provider for auction-based ad impression buying. Berlik is convinced that a marketing department will look different tomorrow than it does today. A greater understanding of technology must be developed, and computer scientists and data analysis specialists must find their way into marketing departments. "Chief Marketing Officers will be replaced by Chief Data Officers".

Roger Calisi, District Manager Sales & Marketing Mercedes-Benz Switzerland, also shared the view in his presentation that the marketing and sales process must be based more on hard data. "At the end of the day, marketing is all about sales," he said. Virginie Fortun, Direction Développement stratégique Le Temps, provided the media provider's perspective. "Media providers have to be extremely innovative and use all means at their disposal to find new ways to offer new, effective advertising services to advertisers on the one hand and to offer readers a clear differentiation of high-quality editorial content on the other," said Virginie Fortun.

Kimon Zorbas, Vice President IAB Europe, illustrated in his presentation that data is important, "If data is king, then the prince is the user", but at the same time made it clear that European regulation could demand a restriction on data availability in the future.

Following the presentations, Stephan Klapproth, 10vor10 moderator, discussed with the speakers and Chris Morgan, Head of Digital at Publicitas. All speakers agreed that RTA is a necessary development that needs to be accelerated. RTA is both a revolution and an evolution.

The official name of Publicitas' premium inventory marketplace was also launched at the P-Forum: "The Mark", based on the SSP technology from Improve Digital. With "The Mark", Publicitas will in future market the digital inventory of media providers using the real-time process and give advertisers the opportunity to buy digital inventory in an automated and data-driven way. Local.ch is already one of the first companies in Switzerland to use Publicitas' real-time advertising solution, enabling it to monetize and manage its digital advertising inventory even better.
