Last but not least: The agony of the voluntary pay choice

Taz.de has introduced a paywall. However, it is semi-permeable, as readers can choose whether to pay and how much to pay. Readers, however, are not exactly pleased with this move.

From now on, users of Taz.de will be greeted with a paywall. With two different layer motifs "stay free" on the homepage and "taz paywall" at article level, Taz is once again focusing on the principle of voluntary payment for online articles. Taz.de writes this on its own Blog. The taz introduced voluntary payment back in 2011. And payments have already been made. Since then, small amounts totaling 70,000 euros have been collected. Last month alone, readers voluntarily paid almost 4,000 euros, writes Taz.de on its blog. More than half of this came via regular direct debits. Nina Schoenian, Head of Digital, says: "It's more of a pay choice. The amount of voluntary contributions is increasing slightly from month to month, and the campaign is now intended to increase the total number of people willing to pay."

Although the paywall that has now been introduced is still a pay choice, it is more like a begging choice. This is because the user has to decide whether they want to pay for the article before they have had time to read it. If the user chooses "Yes", there are six ways to pay for the online content - Paypal, mobile payment, credit card, bank transfer, direct debit or standing order. If "No" is selected, the window with the payment request closes again - the article can still be read free of charge.

And yet, the campaign doesn't seem to be making much of an impression on Taz readers. On the one hand, readers are annoyed that the question: "Is this article worth anything to you?" appears after just a few seconds. So there is no time for an honest answer. On the other hand, subscribers in particular are not exactly happy that they have to answer the question with "No", even though they are already paying for the Taz. The idea of a voluntary pay-wall has therefore become a pay-question. (uma)

Miaou-O-Mat collected money for Swiss animal welfare

The Felix brand, part of Nestlé Purina Pet Care, has drawn attention with a humorous campaign. The advertising agency Ander Group, BSW from Manno near Lugano, and the consumer relations agency PR Fact from Zurich were commissioned to create the Miaou-O-Mat.

The two agencies were tasked with effectively staging the campaign with the Miaou-O-Mat and attracting media attention. The Miaou-O-Mat toured Switzerland for almost three weeks, making cat lovers, passers-by and tourists meow and laugh - for a good cause. The Miaou-O-Mat not only rewarded every authentic meow with a portion of Felix brand cat food, but also triggered a donation of 1 franc to the Swiss Animal Protection STS. The campaign resulted in a donation check in the amount of CHF 7,851 being handed over to Swiss Animal Protection.

From October 29 to November 17, the numerous Miaus in the post offices in Geneva and Lausanne as well as in the SBB stations in Zurich, Lucerne, Basel and Berne could not be ignored. From the Lausanne and Zurich locations the best Miaou-O-Mat scenes on Youtube summarized in a video that already has over 6,000 views.

Ringier with its own Swiss TV station

Apparently, the Ringier publishing group is planning to launch a Swiss TV station. According to well-informed sources cited by *Der Sonntag*, the plans for the TV station are already well advanced.

The plan is for the Ringier channel to focus on entertainment and, as a celebrity and event channel, to supplement the commercial exploitation chain of the publishing house with its own channel. According to Sonntag internally, the exit from "Teleclub" (Werbewoche.ch reported) on the final preparations for its own station. The station is scheduled to start broadcasting as early as next spring. This is the result of research by Sonntag. Ringier spokesman Edi Estermann would neither confirm nor deny: "The TV sector definitely remains an issue for Ringier, even if we have pulled out of various projects."

According to Sonntag, the name of the Ringier channel is unclear so far. After the public channels SF 1 and SF 2 and the two national private channels 3+ and 4+, Ringier is left with only the number five for its channel, which is not exactly considered optimal internally.

22nd Bern Media Day: "Beware of staged stories"

«Primeurs und Enthüllungen oder alles nur heisse Luft?: Am 22. Berner Medientag diskutierten am letzten Samstag mehr als 100 Journalistinnen und Journalisten, Kommunikationsleute und Lobbyisten über die Sonntagspresse, den Medienplatz Bern und das Verhältnis Politik und Journalismus.

Five national and an increasing number of regional Sunday newspapers want to come up with exclusive reports at the weekend. But the hunt for primeurs and exclusive reports has its pitfalls: In the absence of daily events, journalism on Sundays feeds even more than during the week on indiscretions from politics, administration and lobbies, according to a press release from the Bern Media Day. More than 100 representatives from journalism, politics and communication discussed this topic on Saturday in the auditorium of the Progr cultural center in Bern. NZZ media editor Rainer Stadler pleaded for the sustainability of articles in the Sunday press. Stories are often toned down or even refuted the next day at the latest and thus collapse.

Sarah Nowotny, editor of the NZZ am Sonntag, explained that she is often offered stories by communications people, but these are often not necessarily the best. Such an offer often forms a research approach, which in turn can lead to a new story. Her competitor, Joël Widmer, editor of the Sonntagszeitung, agreed: Lately, he had rejected more stories than he had taken on. Sometimes you also try to convince organizations to cancel a media conference on a Friday so that you can tell the story exclusively in your own paper on Sunday instead.

Any communications expert who tries to influence reporting with set stories runs the risk of triggering the opposite, warned Roland Binz, crisis communications specialist and former SBB spokesperson. "In the age of transparency, we should instead focus on dialog with all target groups," he emphasized. The same opinion was expressed by Martin Schläpfer, Head of the Economic Policy Directorate at Migros. Nevertheless, he advised political journalists to relocate to Bern. This is the only way to be close to the action and to be able to talk to someone informally. Barbara Ritschard, former staff member of Federal Councillor Moritz Leuenberger, warned journalists against hidden interests. Journalists often lack the necessary information to shed light on stories from the administration and politics.

Maxomedia moves mountains for Swissquote in Shanghai

Maxomedia versetzt für Swissquote Berge – und zwar die Schweizer Berge – ans andere Ende der Welt. Die Agentur hat für Swissquote einen Messeauftritt in Shanghai gestaltet.

In order to raise awareness of the online bank among existing and potential customers in China, Swissquote will be attending the "Money Fair 2012" in Shanghai. The bank will be presenting its services and products there, with particular emphasis on its forex services. The key visual of the exhibition stand, the idyllic mountain landscape, and the message "Moving Mountains since 1997" are intended to show at a glance: "The bank has its origins in the stable Swiss financial center - but is also characterized by its internationality and dynamism."

The exhibition stand will shine in the classic Swissquote orange and thus attract many visitors. Because in China, every color has a certain meaning: orange is generally perceived as very positive, the agency said in a press release.

Gemi October 2012: Adscreen remains the unbroken leader

Advertising pressure is steadily increasing on TV and in electronic media, while teletext and the Internet are losing ground. Adscreen remains the undisputed leader.

TV and electronic media as a whole show a continuous increase to 610 index points each, which corresponds to an increase of 6 points for TV and 3 points for electronic media. Adscreen remains the frontrunner with an increase of 13 points to 627 (614). Radio remained constant at 416 index points, while Teletext recorded a slight decline of 86 (88) index points. These are the findings of the October edition of the Goldbach Index Gemi for advertising pressure in the overall market and electronic media.

The most striking decline of 16 points was recorded by Internet (display only), which corresponds to a current level of 639 (655) index points. "The online market has not yet managed to capitalize on the enormous benefits of its campaigns, especially for branding campaigns. With moving images, on the other hand, many clients are already seeing the positive effect that they can achieve with rich media advertising, which is why we are seeing double-digit growth with moving images," explains Alexander Horrolt, Managing Director Goldbach Audience (Switzerland).
