Press Council reprimands Das Magazin

In an article about parents who are disowned by their children, the magazine violated the Journalists' Code of Ethics. This is the conclusion reached by the Press Council. The names of a daughter and her mother had not been changed in the text—according to the author, this was done inadvertently.

The article titled "I'm off then" was about adult children who disown their parents. In one of two examples, the report gave the mother's first name and surname, the names of the two children, the daughter's place of origin and field of study, and her age. The daughter filed a complaint with the Press Council five months later, claiming that the mention of the details made her identifiable, violated her privacy and damaged her reputation. The Press Council approved the complaint, as it announced on Tuesday.

Motion to disregard

The Tamedia legal service, which represented Das Magazin, had applied for the case to be dismissed. The name had been published unchanged by mistake. The author had apologized to the daughter in writing immediately after publication, and the editorial team had deleted the complainant's name from the archive and corrected it in the online version. Furthermore, the Tamedia legal service was of the opinion that no conclusions could be drawn about the complainant from the mention of her name, because the name was widely used. The other details only allowed conclusions to be drawn by third parties belonging to the family, social or professional environment.Normally, the Press Council does not intervene in complaints "if the editorial office concerned has already publicly apologized and or taken corrective measures in a matter of minor relevance".

Incomplete correction

The Press Council Presidium, which dealt with the complaint, nevertheless accepted it. It justified its decision by stating that the written apology provided by "Das Magazin" had not been submitted despite a request to do so. In the online version, "Das Magazin" had also only changed the first name of the complainant. All other information - including the first and last name of the mother - had remained unchanged. The original article was also stored in the Swiss media database. The magazine had neither publicly apologized for the error, nor did the corrective measures appear sufficient, which is why the Press Council took up the complaint and ultimately approved it. Point 7 of the Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists obliges media professionals to respect the privacy of the individual, unless the public interest demands otherwise. (SDA)

Audience Council praises "Schwiizer Chuchi with Ivo Adam

"Diverse, informative and entertaining" is how the SRG Audience Council finds the TV show "Schwiizer Chuchi mit Ivo Adam" on SF 1. For a future season, however, the Audience Council would like to see urban regions and their residents included.

The strong Swiss connection, the unconventional cook, the relaxed conversations with the hosts and the beautiful pictures give the program its entertainment value, as the audience council announced on Monday. Because it is not only about cooking but also about stories and portraits, the cooking show also appeals to those less interested in cooking. It is criticized however that once more the rural and idyllic Switzerland is represented and rather an older, traditional target public is addressed. The time slot, weekdays at 6:15 p.m., is also unfavorable for younger people, working people and families.

Discover the unknown

The audience council has much praise for the radio program "Music for a Guest" on DRS 2. The broad selection of guests and the calm conversational style are particularly well received. The music part also provides pleasant surprises time and again. The selection of guests does not focus on celebrities, but rather on the discovery of unknown but no less interesting people. The program thus offers something surprising, new and exciting. The audience council is controversial about the time of broadcast. Some find the midday time suitable, others could enjoy the broadcast in the evening more, as it says in the message. (SDA)

Mobile ad blocker scares digital economy

The anti-advertising browser extension Adblock from Eyeo will be released for mobile devices on Tuesday. The online advertising industry fears a major loss of revenue in the promising market of smartphones and tablets. According to the Financial Times, social networks are also threatened with losses.

"This will be the first app that removes all advertising from your phone. There is a huge demand for software like this," says Eyeo co-founder Till Faida. For the mobile online advertising market, which is still growing, this must sound like a threat. Media, advertising agencies, social networks, bloggers and many other site operators whose offerings are ad-financed must expect losses. In 2011, mobile advertising generated around four billion dollars worldwide. However, the future growth potential is generally considered to be enormous.

It is difficult to estimate the extent of the damage caused by Adblock Plus and other comparable software. The PC version of Adblock Plus has been downloaded more than 180 million times for Firefox alone. In the USA and the UK, it is estimated that between two and three percent of Internet users use the ad blocker. The extension is even more popular in Germany. Here, every tenth user is said to have installed the program. Competing products are not yet included in this estimate. If the number of mobile users were to reach similar levels to those on computers, the losses would already be considerable.

Danger for free network

Advertising companies warn that the widespread use of ad blockers poses a general threat to free content on the internet. Adblock representative Faida also recognizes this. He advises the industry to stop placing aggressive, annoying ads. "Advertisements should bring added value: But if people have a negative attitude towards advertising, online advertising as a whole is in danger." For some time now, Ad-Block Plus has included a "whitelist" that allows unobtrusive, non-annoying ads. This is intended to protect small publishers and bloggers in particular from loss of revenue.

Social networks, most of which are hoping for mobile advertising as the business model of the future, could also suffer from the loss of revenue. "The operators will certainly not be happy, as many are hoping for mobile revenues. Mobile advertising on social media does not improve the user experience, which is already limited by the small screen," Ed Wohlfahrt from Edrelations told Pressetext. The need for ad blockers could therefore be even greater on cell phones than on computers. Due to the enormous range of advertising available, online advertising is inherently a business segment in which individual placements hardly cost any money. Large revenues are only generated by the masses. If mobile ad blockers develop into a mass phenomenon, Facebook and co will probably have to rethink their future plans.

Theoretically, it is technically possible to install an adblocker. However, this is not a good idea, as customers who do not want advertising sometimes react aggressively if they are forced to do so, as some reports on the Internet show. (Press release)

Last but not least: A greeting from Ringier

On her 48th birthday, Ringier surprises Vreni Schneider with a nice present: Blick am Abend finally makes her forget her Olympic victories and matter-of-factly refers to her as a "Swiss pop singer".

So now it's happened: Vreni Schneider is officially a musician. Ringier had to fight for a long time until this fact was finally anchored in people's minds. Some obstacles were cleared out of the way until she was no longer reduced to her phenomenal skiing successes. "Leave Vreni alone!" was Blick's rebuke to Swiss television when Messrs. Giacobbo and Müller referred to the somewhat awkward choreography as "Glarner Gangnam Style" due to years of wearing ski boots ("SF drags our ski queen into the mud"). The rock that paralyzed the Gotthard line was later explained by the two of them via a video clip ("E Gruess us dä Bergä is Tal"). Opening the eyes of the ladies and gentlemen of Leutschenbach was certainly not a bad idea. Because even after the attempts to explain, they still have a hard time with Gold-Vreni's career 2.0. For example "Glanz & Gloria" still convinces todayMs. Schneider had "made her singing debut" on her favorite show, Happy Day. Of course she didn't, after all, she already waved her neo-hit "E Gruess us dä Bergä" through the TV landscape on the occasion of the national holiday. On SF1 - but in today's flood of channels, even a people magazine can't keep an eye on all of them. At least Blick didn't miss the appearance ("Vreni Schneider sings!").

Anyway. Everything turned out well. The fears expressed by Blick on August 20, 1994 did not come true ("Vreni Schneider: One-time detour"). The then still active ski racer announced that she would not sing on Sepp Trütsch's show "Musig-Plausch" after all. The slalom queen "never dreamed of making a name for herself as a folklore queen one day," the newspaper said with a worried undertone. At least the Swiss public once again has a really relevant topic to deal with. And for those who find it all too much: A "Kafi am Pischterand" helps. But "with music" please, as they say in the vernacular. (hae)
