Only one-third of Swiss SMEs are represented on social media

A large portion of the Swiss population is active on social media and uses this technology regularly. But to what extent do Swiss SMEs also maintain their own profiles on such platforms, and what kind of reach do these profiles generate? A survey by the University of Applied Sciences of Graubünden paints a sobering picture.

news-ch-kmu-social-media

Just under one-third of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Switzerland are on social media, according to the analysis, with Facebook at 29.3 percent, Instagram at 16.1 percent and LinkedIn at 12.4 percent the dominant platforms.

21.3 percent of Swiss SMEs operate profiles on at least two social media platforms. Facebook and Instagram are combined most frequently, in 137 cases (14 percent). A special feature can be seen in second place: In 9.8 percent (96 cases) of the SMEs surveyed, Facebook is used exclusively without another platform. Third place is taken by the combination of Facebook and LinkedIn with 8.8 percent (86 cases).

In terms of the reach that SMEs achieve with their social media presence, Instagram is in first place, with an average reach of 1,193 followers, followed by Facebook with 924 followers.

Individual platforms used with restraint

The reach on Xing in particular is very low, with an average of only 17 followers. Looking at the reach of Swiss SMEs across all platforms, the average reach is 1,438 followers.

"The figures indicate that with regard to own social media profiles, for many SMEs the expected efforts exceed the expected returns. This is precisely where we come in in our project by helping SMEs to identify valuable returns by using social media efficiently and sensibly," says Sebastian Früh, project manager at the Swiss Institute for Entrepreneurship.

Attract new customers and retain existing ones

Social media offer small and medium-sized companies a wide range of possible applications and added value potential. Many SMEs are particularly interested in outbound communication, which should bring them new customers or help them to better retain existing customers.

Somewhat less intensively, SMEs on social media platforms pursue purposes relating to incoming information ("inbound") and its analysis. Through interactions with potential and current customers on social media, SMEs could also apply market research methods regarding product-related preferences or price sensitivities, for example. However, realizing this added-value potential would require considerable effort on the part of the companies, which would have to be spent in addition to managing day-to-day business.

Importance of social media on the rise

The importance of using social media is growing for SMEs, as the proportion of the Swiss population active on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is increasing. For SMEs, it is important to find out to what extent possible positive contributions to their business can actually be realized at reasonable cost and effort.

The University of Applied Sciences Graubünden would like to use the Research report "Use of social media platforms by Swiss SMEs".  which support companies in considering their social media presence. The report provides a first-time overview of the use and reach of Swiss SMEs on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, XING, LinkedIn, YouTube) and was produced as part of a project funded by the Friends of the University of Applied Sciences Graubünden and includes a survey of social media activities based on a representative sample of 976 Swiss SMEs.

Swiss Life and Jeff analyze self-determination types

Swiss Life Switzerland and Jeff launch a digital image campaign around the topic of self-determination. The centerpiece is a personality test to determine one's own self-determination type.

SL_Purpose_Halfpage_Ad_300x600_v04_RZ_3

Self-determination has different faces. For some, it means getting everything under one roof, for others it is nothing other than independence. Still others associate it with more time, more spontaneity or more flexibility. For Swiss Life, self-determination means helping people to lead a self-determined life - and advising them individually and entirely according to their personal needs.

Self-test with scientific legitimacy

The new campaign by Swiss Lift and Jeff does not merely highlight the diversity of self-determination, but directly addresses the very individual understanding of it. The centerpiece is the self-determination type test developed especially for Swiss Life. The Hamburg agency Sturm und Drang provided the research basis to make the test development possible. Ethnographic interviews were used to identify self-determination types, which can be determined on the basis of short, intuitive questions. Four types are distinguished: Sovereignty Preserver, Initiative Seizer, Opportunity Taster, and Interest Balancer.

"The visual test was developed together with Joixes, a start-up founded by ETH graduates," says Melanie Gujan, Head of Marketing Communication at Swiss Life Switzerland. They found that personal taste says a lot about a person's type, behavior and way of doing things. Tailored to the ethnographic data, this simple self-determination type test was thus created.

Broad online presence and testimonials

The overall campaign relies on a broad online presence with emotional images and video sequences in ten different motifs. In order to sharpen the concept of "self-determination," real people were portrayed in short videos, each representing a self-determination type and with their personal stories additionally emotionalize the campaign as testimonials.

Stuiq sleeps well with Bico

In its opening campaign for the new Bico Showroom in Zurich, Stuiq connects with people directly through their sleep and sleeping habits.

BICO_plakat_f12

"Sleep well, Züri." is the message to people in the city and the region. Because what could be better than a really good night's sleep? We humans sleep for almost a third of our lives. So it simply has to be perfect. For the opening of the new Bico showroom in Zurich, Stuiq developed the overall communication and relied on a strong involvement of the population in the immediate opening phase. As a DOOH strategy in Zurich City, the subject changes depending on the time of day to "Häsch guet gschlafe, Züri?", and is thus close to people and part of their everyday lives.

The campaign is complemented by user-centric, digital performance measures that sensitize potential customers to their sleeping habits. Belly or back? Owl or lark? Freezing or sweating? Communication is consistently aligned with customer needs. Because Bico has the right solution for all sleeping habits and positions itself as a personal sleep expert. The aim is also to raise awareness of sleep and demonstrate its importance for a person's own health.

Supino ties receipt of "Bern model" to conditions

According to publisher Pietro Supino, Tamedia intends to continue the «Bern Model» with two competing daily newspapers. However, Supino has made the continued publication of *Der Bund* and the *Berner Zeitung* contingent on certain political conditions, among other things.

Dr._Pietro_Supino-t

In addition to the willingness of the reading public to pay and advertising investments by the economy, politics is called upon, writes Supino, who also presides over the Swiss Media Publishers Association, in an article published on Thursday to mark the 170th anniversary of the daily newspaper. The Covenant published article.

Politics could make a significant contribution to managing structural change. For example, by preventing the federal parliament from Confederation and Bernese Newspaper be disadvantaged in the law on the promotion of online media by the so-called holding clause.

However, the merger under one corporate roof was a prerequisite for "maintaining two newspapers with respectable editorial teams in Bern". Looking to the future, this is only possible if this entrepreneurial achievement is appreciated and the legal framework conditions are "not worse compared to other media offerings.

The bill on media subsidies is expected to come before the National Council in the winter session. The media package could be amended in the spring at the earliest, and entry into force is realistic at the beginning of 2022 at the earliest.

"Distortion of competition" by scoreboard

Another example of "how politics can make a significant contribution are the scoreboards," Supino writes. Instead of "losing a lot of money and distorting competition" with the scoreboards, the governments of the city and canton of Bern should look for a joint solution. (SDA)

Switzerland falls behind in a study on digital competitiveness

According to a study, the Corona pandemic has shown that Switzerland is well positioned in terms of digitization. However, digitization experts warn that major efforts are still needed if Switzerland is not to fall behind comparable countries such as Denmark and Sweden.

switzerland_digitalisierung

According to the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking 2020, Switzerland has fallen out of the top five countries with the best digital competitiveness in an international comparison. After Hong Kong, the country now occupies sixth place.

The United States, Singapore and Denmark occupy the podium positions, according to the rankings released Thursday.

This year's study by the Lausanne-based IMD World Competitiveness Center (WCC) used the Corona pandemic as a case study to examine how the economies of the 63 countries surveyed are using digital technologies that could help address the health crisis.

Corona as a "digital stress test

The Corona pandemic is a kind of "digital stress test" for every nation, Martin Vetterli, President of the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne EPFL summarized the study results on Thursday. Only under the conditions of a lockdown and collaboration in the home office does the actual state of an economy in terms of digitalization become apparent, he said.

When it comes to the digitization of the Swiss healthcare system, the professor of computer science and communications gives the Swiss authorities a rather mixed report. Although the example of contact tracing, which has worked well so far, shows that the country is certainly capable of mastering challenges, the "general digital state" of the healthcare system is still lagging behind many countries such as Denmark or Sweden.

Healthcare still has a lot of potential

"The Covid 19 pandemic was the ultimate wake-up call for Swiss health authorities in terms of digitization," added Marc Walder, initiator of Digitalswitzerland and CEO of media company Ringier.

He, too, draws a mixed interim conclusion regarding the latest data in the report: "On the one hand, we can be proud of many things we got up and running promptly in the wake of the Corona crisis. On the other hand, he said, the height of the pandemic showed that many operations still had a long way to go in terms of digital potential." Walder cited as an example, for example, the use of fax machines to transmit infection figures.

Another concrete example, he said, is the electronic patient dossier: "There is still a great deal of unused optimization potential here, on which all stakeholders agree, but the necessary political enforcement continues to fail." (SDA)
