Sir Mary sprays 8,000 advertising week covers by hand

This is an absolute first in Swiss media history: The Zurich-based agency Sir Mary has hand-designed 8,000 covers for the latest issue of *Werbewoche*. Unique graffiti designs adorn the magazine, which will be published on March 6.

The agency is thus celebrating its Megaphon Award as best newcomer in the DACH region, which it received in Berlin on January 31. Pascal Baumann, Creative Director at Sir Mary and former graffiti artist, spent several days at Galledia Print in Flawil for the spectacular campaign.

There, among other things, he sprayed hearts, smileys or peace signs over the pre-printed letters "SRMY BRLN". This abbreviation of "Sir Mary in Berlin" refers to the prize and the cover story of the advertising week dedicated to the agency's trip to the German capital.

Editorial team and agency pleased with successful campaign

But Pascal Baumann's biography is not the only explanation for the use of graffiti colors on the Werbewoche cover. After all, the agency won its first major budget from Allianz Insurance three years ago with a graffiti campaign. "What a successful campaign," says Anna Kohler, Editor-in-Chief of Werbewoche, delightedly. "Being bold, unconventional and even a little provocative at times is what further raises Werbewoche's profile. Through this performance, we are underlining this attitude."

Pascal Baumann, Creative Director at Sir Mary, adds with a twinkle in his eye, "When an idea is born of passion, you make 8,000 unique pieces and get tendinitis."

Facebook and Google restrict election advertising

Facebook has banned the publication of election advertising financed from abroad in Indonesia ahead of the presidential election on April 17. This is intended to prevent foreign influence on the vote, the online network announced on Monday.

The Facebook ban in Indonesia therefore applies to all advertising that refers to politicians or political parties, as well as attempts to encourage people to vote or discourage them from doing so. The review of advertisements and commercials is carried out both mechanically and by employees, it said.

In Indonesia, incumbent Joko Widodo is running again in the upcoming presidential election against former general Prabowo Subianto, who already lost to him in 2014. At that time, there were fierce disputes between the political camps during the election campaign.

Prevent interference

In February, the Russian embassy in Jakarta denied that Moscow was interfering in the current election campaign after Joko accused the opposing camp of "Russian propaganda". The opposition, on the other hand, accuses the president of being too close to China.

In the run-up to several important elections in the Asia-Pacific region, Facebook says it is also planning a new headquarters in Singapore to combat election interference, fake news and hate speech on the internet.

In Europe, Facebook already stopped foreign election advertising in Ukraine in January with a view to the upcoming presidential election on March 31. For the European Parliament elections in May, Facebook promises to introduce transparency measures that are already in place in the USA.

So far, this has included the requirement that anyone wishing to place advertisements with political content must provide their identity and location. In addition, the ads are to be stored in a publicly accessible database for up to seven years. Facebook came under fire after propaganda campaigns run by Russia became known during the 2016 US presidential election campaign.

Google announces restrictions on voting in Canada

Google, for its part, wants to completely abandon election advertising on its platforms ahead of the parliamentary elections in Canada, which are due to take place on October 21 at the latest. According to Canadian media reports on Tuesday, the company explained that it would be virtually impossible to comply with the new transparency rules.

A law passed in December stipulates that internet platforms should keep a register of all published political advertisements. As ads are placed automatically, Google cannot know which ads the customer is seeing, the company argued. (SDA)

Tier im Recht, Pro Tier and Vier Pfoten launch campaign against wild animals in circuses

Wild animals do not belong in the circus ring: The three animal welfare organizations—Tier im Recht, Pro Tier, and Vier Pfoten—want to emphasize their call for a ban through a joint campaign.

KWIZ Spiegel D_A3_quer_klein

The new campaign by Vier Pfoten, Tier im Recht and ProTier underpins the demand for a legal ban on wild animals in circuses.
The 2019 circus season has begun and once again big cats have involuntarily found their way back into the circus ring. Although Switzerland boasts exemplary animal welfare legislation, it lags far behind the rest of the world when it comes to circuses: 28 European countries have already significantly restricted or even banned the use of wild animals in circuses.

In contrast, the three animal welfare organizations criticize in a joint press release that in Germany circuses are even allowed to fall massively below the minimum requirements of animal welfare legislation, which zoos, for example, must adhere to.

For Vanessa Gerritsen from the Foundation for Animals in the Law (TIR), one thing is clear: "Dubious dressage methods and unnatural and often humiliating tricks violate the dignity of animals." Instead of giving these animal species, which are often under severe pressure in their habitat, the protection they urgently need, they are humanized in circus performances and shown as fun birds, beasts or cuddly animals.

"The fact that wild animals in circuses are no longer ethically acceptable is shown by the petition with over 70,000 signatures that we submitted to the Federal Council in March 2018. This petition finally calls for a national ban on wild animals in circuses in Switzerland too," says Monika Wasenegger from ProTier. In its reply, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) explained that the strict legal regulations take sufficient account of animal welfare in Swiss wild animal husbandry and that there is therefore no need to ban wild animals in circuses. This means that it is still up to the circus companies to comply with animal welfare requirements - which is simply unacceptable from an animal welfare perspective.

Lucia Oeschger from Vier Pfoten clarifies: "The breeding of wild animals such as lions and tigers specifically for the entertainment industry is definitely not justifiable from an animal welfare perspective. The petition's concerns are by no means off the table, but will be pursued with renewed vigor."

This year, the three animal welfare organizations Vier Pfoten, Tier im Recht and ProTier want to emphasize the demand once again with the expressive campaign, which was created through a cooperation between Viva Colores Switzerland and Nachtlicht Creative. The public and parliament are to be further informed about the lifelong suffering experienced by wild animals in circuses so that a legal ban can finally be implemented. (hae/pd)
