Instagram is popular, but it has its pitfalls

According to the Cybersmile Foundation’s «Social America» study, Instagram is the most popular social media platform among younger generations, while Facebook has largely fallen out of favor. However, cyberbullying represents a significant downside.

socialmedia-apps

Instagram is the most popular social media platform among both Millenials and the subsequent Generation Z in the US, but it also has a problem. Young people believe it is the platform where cyberbullying is most prevalent.

The old giant Facebook, on the other hand, is the platform whose popularity is declining most significantly according to both generations and, according to Gen Z, the least relevant platform of all for young people.

Instagram clear top

For the study, Cybersmile surveyed more than 20,000 Americans aged 13 to 34 about their views on social media, from Twitter to YouTube to TikTok. The clear number one among social networks is Instagram, which a total of 44 percent name as their favorite platform and 41 percent consider as the most relevant social media platform for young people.

In both cases, Snapchat follows at a noticeable distance in second place. In terms of popularity, Instagram is also the second-fastest growing platform, edged out only by the up-and-coming video clip service TikTok.

Problem Cyberbullying

A clear downside of Instagram in the eyes of young people is cyberbullying. Among Gen Z, almost a third of respondents see the image and video service as platforms with the biggest problem in this area.

Among millenials, on the other hand, Facebook is considered the bullying stronghold. Across all respondents, Instagram comes out just worst at 26 percent, with Twitter following behind Facebook in third place of the cyberbullying problem zones, also by a small margin.
When it comes to cyberbullying, however, both age groups feel safest on Pinterest.

Facebook is not for young people

Not really surprisingly, Facebook is now relatively disengaged among U.S. youth. A total of 27 percent see it as the most irrelevant social network for young people. Only the business network LinkedIn performed similarly poorly, with millenials naming it even more often than Facebook.

There is agreement among the younger generations, however, that Facebook is falling in popularity among young people like no other platform. With just under a third of all mentions, it registered more than the numbers two and three among the popularity relegated, Tumblr and Skype, together. (pte)

International media report on "Green Wave" in Switzerland

Several international media reported on the success of the Greens on Sunday. "For Switzerland - known for the stability of its political landscape - it is an earthquake," writes Le Monde, for example.

faz-lemonde-corriere-grünewelleschweiz

"The right-wing and left-wing eco parties have established themselves as important political forces," stresses the French daily. In this way, Switzerland is joining a political trend that has already reached other European countries such as Germany and Austria, according to the analysis of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

The BBC explains the Greens' success quite simply: "The Swiss need only look up to see the effects of climate change: Glaciers are melting and in mountainous areas people are threatened by landslides."

The FAZ refers to billions of francs that need to be invested in Switzerland to tackle global warming. According to the German daily, the Greens' success does not mean that the party should join the Federal Council. "So the Greens will probably have to prove that their flight of fancy is permanent before they can seriously hope for a place in the government," says the FAZ. (SDA)

Federer and Tchoumi did not do surreptitious advertising, according to SLK

Unlike Iouri Podladtchikov and Jolanda Neff, Roger Federer and influencer Xenia Tchoumi do not engage in unfair surreptitious advertising on their social media accounts, according to the Fair Trading Commission.

As the Foundation for Consumer Protection (SKS) announced on Friday, the Commission for Fair Trading has rejected its two complaints in this regard. The SKS had objected to a film by Roger Federer and a post by Xenia Tchoumi on Instagram because they were not labeled as advertising.

According to the SKS press release, the Commission on Fair Trading does not deny that both cases involve commercial communication. However, it is clearly recognizable for the "average addressee" that this is advertising.

Tchoumi's entire account, on which she prominently presents brand jewelry, is purely commercial in nature. Individual posts would therefore not have to be labeled as advertising. With athletes such as Federer, it is common and easily recognizable that brand logos are presented for purely commercial reasons.

First rulings on influencer advertising

In July, on the other hand, the Commission on Fair Trading approved two complaints from consumer protection in the first ever rulings on influencer advertising in Switzerland. Snowboarder Iouri Podladtchikov and mountain biker Jolanda Neff had engaged in unfair surreptitious advertising on the Instagram platform.

Snowboarder Podladtchikov had his picture taken in the entrance of a clothing store. Cyclist Neff distributed a post from a credit card company.

A person who receives sponsorship services or comparable payments or benefits in kind must disclose their relationship to the person providing the service, the Commission on Fair Trading stated at the time, justifying the inadmissibility of the advertising and the approval of the SKS complaints.

SKS: "Confusing decisions"

For SKS Managing Director Sara Stalder, these are "confusing decisions", as she is quoted in the press release. The rules are not only unclear for influencers and consumers, but also contradictory. The different assessments are incomprehensible.

"There is now chaos as to when advertising on social media must be labeled," commented Stalder. On behalf of the SKS, she called for the Fairness Commission to "establish comprehensible rules" for advertising on social media portals.

The SKS intends to submit further complaints against influencers in order to clarify the unsatisfactory situation. It will decide whether to appeal against the decisions that have already been made after reviewing and comparing the detailed justifications. (SDA)

Fake news bounces off established brands

Fake news posts on social media do little to damage the reputation of established brands. While most users are skeptical of negative content about well-known brands, they still tend to trust the brands themselves. This is according to a study by North Carolina State University.

coca-cola

According to the study, many users fundamentally do not trust news on social media. "When companies communicate the truth to fake news stories, they have to pay attention to the trustworthiness of each social media platform. They then need to decide which social media is suitable to target customers," explains Yang Cheng, co-author of the study.

As the news portal Pressetext writes, for their scientific study the researchers analyzed the example of a false report about the Coca-Cola company that circulated on Facebook in 2016. It claimed that the beverage company had to take back bottles of its Dasani water brand because they were infested with parasites.

Customers trust their brands

In total, the team showed the fake news story to 468 study participants and asked them about it without telling them it wasn't true. They then revealed the story to be false and asked the study participants again. It turned out that respondents were more likely to see through Fake News when they trusted Facebook less.

The more the respondents trusted themselves to recognize false reports, the less they believed the Dasani story. However, there was little change in respondents' trust toward the Coca-Cola or Dasani brand. According to Cheng, it would be interesting to explore how fake news can affect the reputation of smaller or newer brands. (pte)

MetaTheme "Pioneers, unite!": Brand profiling through partnerships

In October, MetaDesign hosted two MetaThema events, one in Zurich and one in Bern. Using the ABB Formula E as an example, the agency discussed the key factors behind successful brand partnerships together with ABB and Julius Bär.

MetaThema_ABB_Formula_E_03

At MetaThema, MetaDesign regularly presents a current topic to an audience from the fields of management, communication and marketing. In addition to the discussion in a panel of experts, guests have the opportunity to
to get into conversation with colleagues during the subsequent aperitif.

Brand profiling through partnership

This time, the focus was on brand partnerships. How can a brand distinguish and differentiate itself in today's networked world? "Team up", says MetaDesign - and do it sensibly: because brand partnerships need to be well thought out.

"Isn't brand partnership just a 'fancy' word for sponsorship? Some may ask. No, it is not. Because true brand partnership goes far beyond giving money and putting your logo everywhere. Rather, it's about making common cause: It's about collaborations and co-creation of content and thus sharing and strengthening brand presence and reach," Alexander Haldemann, CEO of MetaDesign, opened the event.

The ABB Formula-E, with ABB as the title partner and Julius Baer as the global partner, served as an example of successful brand partnerships. Together with Larissa Alghisi, Chief Communications Officer at Julius Baer, and Nicolas Ziegler, Head of Markets, Brand and Events at ABB, experiences were exchanged and the success factors and challenges of brand partnerships were discussed.

Three pioneers - one common goal

As a platform and driving force for electric racing, ABB Formula-E has meanwhile developed into a global entertainment brand. A partnership between ABB Formula-E and the global technology company ABB therefore makes perfect sense - after all, both brands want to stand for innovation, technology, the future and globality.

While the partnership between ABB Formula-E and ABB is understandable, Julius Baer wonders what the two brands have in common: "It was an instinctive decision, not without risks. But we wanted an innovative platform with the will to shape the future and the ability to inspire people," says Larissa Alghisi, Chief Communications Officer at Julius Baer.

It was clear to both speakers that it takes a lot of time, care, sometimes a little courage and above all a lot of passion to make a brand partnership really successful and to keep it that way.

CH Media acquires the 3-Plus station group

With the acquisition of the 3 Plus group of channels, CH Media becomes the largest private Swiss TV broadcaster. Dominik Kaiser will remain on board as a consultant for the time being and will then pursue new opportunities.

CH-Media

Channels 3+, 4+, 5+ and 6+ change hands. CH Media is taking over the 3-Plus Group. This was announced by the two media companies on Friday afternoon. The parties have agreed not to disclose the sale price. In the run-up, prices of between CHF 100 and 120 million were circulating - in the CH Media newspaper Switzerland at the weekend The price is rumored to be 100 million Swiss francs. The purchase was financed by CH Media's own capital and bank loans.

3+ founder Dominik Kaiser will remain CEO until the transaction is completed and will then assist CH Media as a consultant in the merger of the two companies. After that, Kaiser will devote himself to new tasks: "I don't know yet what I'm going to do with my time, it's an unfamiliar feeling," Kaiser said on Friday at the media conference, which was called at short notice. "The whole thing is very emotional for me, I cried with the employees today". Sooner or later, however, he will want to build something again, says Kaiser, who is putting his life's work into new hands with 3+.

Axel Wüstmann, CEO CH Media, Dominik Kaiser, founder and CEO 3-Plus Group, and Peter Wanner, Chairman of the Board CH Media (from left) after the press conference on Friday.

CH Media says it reaches around two million people in German-speaking Switzerland with regional newspapers and online portals, radio and TV stations, and magazines. With sales of around 480 million and over 2,000 employees, the media company is one of the largest in the country.

According to its own information, the 3-Plus Group employs a total of around 65 people. The Swiss private broadcaster 3+ launched in August 2006. 3+ was in the black for the first time in fiscal 2009. 4+ began operations in October 2012, 5+ in September 2014 and 6+ in March 2019. (hae/SDA/pd)

All 65 employees are taken on

But there is no reason for the 3+ employees to mourn: They will all be taken over by CH Media. Kaiser would also have liked to keep Peter Wanner as managing director: "Unfortunately, we didn't succeed." The head of the new group, which unites all CH Media stations, will be Roger Elsener.

Clear number 1 for the private sector

As Peter Wanner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CH Media, explained, they are now the clear number 1 among private Swiss TV providers. "We are David, the SRG Goliath". He added that the 3-Plus group of stations, in association with TV24, TV25 and S1, ideally complemented the existing regional TV business. The goal now is to catch up with SRF 2 in terms of market share, and if possible even overtake it.

Axel Wüstmann, CEO of CH Media, said he was pleased that CH Media "can invest forward". Today is a milestone in the development, he said. The shareholders are also convinced that moving images have a future, he said.

Showdown at Sunrise AGM over billion-euro purchase of UPC

High noon in the Swiss telecom industry: At Sunrise, a showdown over the multibillion-franc acquisition of UPC is set to take place at the extraordinary general meeting next Wednesday.

UPC-Sunrise

Sunrise wants to put CHF 6.3 billion on the table for the purchase of Switzerland's largest cable network operator (Werbewoche.ch reported). The aim is to get closer to industry leader Swisscom. A capital increase of up to CHF 2.8 billion is planned to finance the largest takeover in the local telecommunications market, which requires shareholder approval.

Here, an ice-cold headwind is blowing in the face of Sunrise's top management. Leading the resistance is Sunrise's largest shareholder, Freenet (Werbewoche.ch reported). The German company, which owns 24.5 percent of Sunrise, switched to opposition in August after initial skepticism about the deal. Freenet CEO Christoph Vilanek criticized the purchase price and the necessary capital increase as too high. He also says the structure of the deal is disadvantageous for Sunrise shareholders.

In addition, he no longer sees the strategic sense of the acquisition. Because of the new 5G mobile communications generation, the purchase of the UPC cable network for so much money is not worthwhile. Spending CHF 6.3 billion on it is "insane," Vilanek said in an interview with the AWP news agency.

The activist shareholder Active Ownership Capital (AOC) sounded the same horn. Unexpectedly, influential proxy advisor ISS joined the "no" camp, which according to the Reuters news agency accounted for more than 30 percent of the vote. Sunrise accused ISS of making "fundamental errors" in its analysis, which is why its recommendations were misleading.

Deal on a knife edge

On the other hand, a number of weighty shareholders such as Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) have also backed the deal. Voting advisors Glass Lewis as well as the Swiss Ethos and zRating also support the deal.

Nevertheless, the billion-euro purchase is on a knife edge. Sunrise needs the approval of more than half of the votes cast at the AGM to be able to carry out the capital increase. That could be tight if Freenet and other shareholders vote against, because all shareholders are never represented at an AGM. In recent years, participation has been between 62 and 67 percent.

However, Sunrise CFO André Krause expects a higher attendance next Wednesday. The Group has made a huge effort to mobilize as many shareholders as possible (Werbewoche.ch reported). Even newspapers ran full-page advertisements for it.

Concessions made

In order to get as many yes votes as possible, Sunrise has already made concessions. The capital increase was reduced to 2.8 billion francs. Originally, it was even worth 4.1 billion francs, which would have exceeded Sunrise's stock market value.

In addition, UPC seller Liberty Global agreed at the beginning of the week to support the capital increase with an amount of up to CHF 500 million at the last minute. If the capital increase goes through, Liberty Global would then own up to 7.8 percent of Sunrise.

Sunrise CEO Olaf Swantee assessed this as a strong signal from Liberty, expressing: "We believe in the merger, the cable network technology and the company." He added that this would facilitate the capital increase by 18 percent.

5G cannot replace cable network

Swantee also defended the purchase plans in terms of content: Swantee rejected as "absurd" the opponents' argument that the new mobile communications generation 5G could replace UPC's cable network. 5G could replace the slow Internet technology ADSL, but not a cable network that delivers speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbit/s).

"If we want to cover every home with 5G, we probably need three times as many antenna sites. We won't be able to do that in Switzerland. We even struggle to put up 20 or 30 new antennas in this country every year," said the Sunrise boss.

Tension rises

Despite the concession, Swantee admitted in an interview to being nervous about the vote. He declined to say how many votes Sunrise had behind it. It is difficult to make a prediction at the moment, he said.

If the deal is rejected at the AGM, Sunrise Chairman Peter Kurer fears a destabilization of the company. Employees would be demotivated. There are likely to be personnel consequences.

"In my case, these are simple: I would be voted out," Kurer had said in an interview. Based on his experience, however, he does not rule out that a "no" vote could result in further departures.

Sunrise CEO Swantee was coy about the question of whether he would then take his hat off: "These are not my priority considerations at the moment. Now it's about Sunrise. I'm not worried about my own job right now."

Major shareholder Axxion has already submitted a motion to vote Kurer and board member Jens Jesper Ovesen out of office at the AGM. (SDA)

Peter Rettinghausen: The post is here

Peter Rettinghausen is now a freelancer. To let potential employers know this, he has launched a social media campaign on his own behalf.

header-Rettinghausen_Good_Headline

After many years at agencies such as Y&R, Wirz, Publicis, McCann Erickson, Scotti and Republica, Rettinghausen decided to work as a freelancer.

The campaign alludes to the well-known layout of Reclam books. "Because boldness also works in social media," said Rettinghausen in a statement. The various headlines are intended to showcase Rettinghausen as an author of high-quality texts.

The aim of the campaign - and therefore of Peter Rettinghausen - is to achieve a high profile among potential clients as quickly as possible. "The evaluation of the initial response data is promising," says the advertiser. It has been running on various social media platforms since mid-October.

Nau.ch gets reinforcement for its two-year anniversary

The news section of the online news portal is getting a new member in the shape of Céline Bader, just in time for its second birthday.

Leitung-News-Ressort

The management team of the news department of Nau.ch is completely in women's hands. Head of Department Alexandra Aregger (center) heads the department, together with her deputies Stéphanie Jenzer (left) and Karin Aebischer (right). Just in time for the anniversary, the newly organized, 16-person news department is strengthened with Céline Bader. The 23-year-old MAZ graduate has just joined Nau from the Neue Oltner Zeitung.

The online news portal has largely been able to establish itself in the last two years. 24 months after its launch, Nau.ch is ranked seventh among the best-regarded Swiss online news portals, and has been in the black since spring 2019.
