OFCOM and Scholz & Friends Zurich go on the air for DAB+

The Swiss radio industry will phase out FM broadcasting by 2024 at the latest. To support the public during this transition, OFCOM issued a call for proposals in 2019 for a four-year communication campaign. Scholz & Friends Zurich won the multi-stage bidding process. The campaign for the digital migration is now getting underway.

BAKOM

The campaign is divided into two phases. The awareness phase, which has now been launched, focuses on the advantages of DAB+. It will be followed by the mobilization phase once the industry has announced a binding FM switch-off timetable.

For phase 1, Scholz & Friends was looking for a winning testimonial - and found one. However, not in the course of a casting, but designed himself. The friendly DAB+ radio "Dabsy" shows the advantages of the digital radio standard on its own "body".

BAKOM

The campaign is fully orchestrated and includes TV, radio, OOH, content formats and various digital measures including social media and community management in the three national languages. In addition, motorists and workshops are a special focus and are therefore addressed with individual measures.

In the course of developing and implementing the campaign, Scholz & Friends Zurich is also responsible for providing and coordinating several partners, including call centers, PR, media and a team of experts for training on all aspects of DAB+.

The measures are developed in close partnership with private commercial and non-commercial radio stations and SRG SSR.

Religious communities respond with streaming and apps

Religious communities in the canton of St. Gallen have responded to the ban on gatherings by offering online services: worship services are being streamed, and apps are sending push notifications during Ramadan. There is some uncertainty, among other things, regarding funeral services.

Religionsgemeinschaften

Representatives of various religions and denominations meet regularly with the canton. This time, they first conducted a brief survey on the impact of the pandemic measures and then discussed the results in a video conference.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Home Affairs on Monday, the religious communities had "switched to primarily internet-based forms" of services such as communal prayer or counseling in a very short space of time.

The range of technical aids used is broad. While professionally produced church service broadcasts from St. Gallen Cathedral are distributed via streams, other religious communities use less expensive forms.

The Islamic Community in Wil, for example, offers a smartphone app via which the imam can invite people to pray together or to presentations and discussions via push messages during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Improved communication

However, the survey also showed that all religious communities have been severely affected by the pandemic measures. The ban on gatherings severely restricts the communal practice of religion in the form of religious services or communal prayers.

Around two weeks ago, considerable shortcomings in communication between hospitals and care homes and the religious communities were noted. In the meantime, the situation has improved. Individual support is being requested, for example in setting up "chat boxes" in care homes or in the use of social media in pastoral care for the elderly.

The religious communities identified a need for clarification regarding funerals. This concerns the use of cemetery chapels and the question of who is specifically responsible for compliance with the various regulations during a funeral. "Corresponding clarifications have been initiated," the department announced. (SDA)

Contexta invites to Valais - also with Corona hairstyle

With their new campaign, «Chum, wie dü bisch,» Contexta and its client Valais/Wallis Promotion are enticing people to explore the Valais countryside after the lockdown—even if their hair isn’t quite perfect yet.

Contexta

Google search interest "cut your own hair" has exploded in recent weeks. Corona hairstyles were heartily shared on social media. Then, when hairdressers grabbed pole position in the federal relaxation, the topic was discussed in the mass media. Now hairdressing salons have been open again for a few days, dividing our society - into those who already were and those who are still waiting.

The Valais brand has taken up this issue - with a clear stance and an activating call: Chum, wie dü bisch! "In Valais, it doesn't matter how you look," says Damian Constantin, director of Valais/Wallis Promotion. "Everything that is important to you is you. And what you do in your moment." With this storytelling, Valais/Wallis Promotion wants to pick up the Swiss who have had to stay at home for weeks and now only want one thing: to get out into nature.

The Valais campaign started on Saturday. The lead medium TV is supported by the distributions in the Sunday press and on social media.

Snickers shows the benefits of the home office

BBDO Philippines and Snickers are using a poster campaign to show that working from home can definitely have its advantages.

Snickers

For years now, the claim "You're not you when you're hungry" has led Snickers' communication strategy. Now, due to the current situation, the company is showing that you can be yourself when you stay at home - and what advantages it can bring when you don't have to go to the office for a change. For example, you don't have to laugh artificially at the boss's flat joke. What's more, you won't find yourself in situations where you're forced to make dull small talk at the water cooler.

St. Galler Tagblatt and Luzerner Zeitung change paywall model

On Monday, CH Media switched the newspaper websites Luzernerzeitung.ch and Tagblatt.ch from the metered model to the so-called freemium model. Other newspaper websites will follow later this year.

St. Galler Tagblatt

Until now, CH Media's newspaper portals have been accessible partly for a fee and partly free of charge. The already fee-based portals Luzernerzeitung.ch and Tagblatt.ch are today being converted from the metered model, in which texts only become chargeable after a certain number of clicks, to a freemium model. Only selected and clearly marked articles are subject to a charge. The rest of the newspaper portal's content remains freely accessible.

With the new paywall logic, CH Media wants to improve transparency vis-à-vis readers and also hopes to learn more about their reading needs and interests.

More titles to follow

In the second half of 2020, the free-access newspaper portals in the Mittelland region - Aargauerzeitung.ch, Solothurnerzeitung.ch, Badenertagblatt.ch, etc. - and in Basel - Bzbasel.ch - will also receive a freemium paywall. CH Media is also planning a complete relaunch of all the digital offerings of its newspapers.

Email marketing provider delivers study with key figures and industry comparisons

Inxmail publishes the "Email Marketing Benchmark 2020" study. According to the study, an average of 27.4% of emails sent in 2019 were opened.

E-Mail-Marketing

The email marketing provider Inxmail has published its annual study with the latest newsletter key figures. The Inxmail Email Marketing Benchmark 2020 looks at the performance of mailings in terms of open, click and bounce rates. The latest edition of the study also provides information on the relevance of newsletter content based on the effective click-through rate. The study also provides detailed industry comparisons, compares the B2B and B2C target groups and looks at the reading habits of recipients.

Email marketing benchmark 2020

The study concludes that more than a quarter of all mailings sent last year were opened (27.4%). Mailings to B2B (27.2%) and B2C (27.5%) were similarly successful. In the "Arts & Culture" sector, almost half of all emails sent were opened by recipients (48.5%). At 38.5%, senders in the "energy industry" sector also achieved high open rates. The "Beauty & Drugstore" sector came last in terms of open rates with an open rate of 14.8%.

The average click rate over the course of 2019 was 3.4%. The "energy industry" sector achieved almost three times as many clicks: 9.2% of recipients responded with a click.

The current edition of the study also provides an evaluation of the effective click rate. This key figure shows how many clicks were generated by openers of a mailing. According to the Inxmail Email Marketing Benchmark 2020, the average effective click-through rate in 2019 was 13.3%. At 13.5%, the effectiveness of content in B2C was slightly higher than in B2B at 12.7%.

Compared to the previous year, almost all key figures show a consistent or improved performance. The open and click rates of the mailings examined increased, albeit only minimally, while bounces decreased.

Success of newsletters over the course of the year

Seasonal celebrations once again had an impact on mailing open rates in 2019: recipients were more receptive to email advertising in the weeks leading up to Carnival, Whitsun and Christmas. The pre-Christmas period in particular boosted open rates: In the B2C sector, the key figure here was around 1.0% above the annual average.

High temperatures and nationwide vacation periods around Easter and the summer vacations, on the other hand, tended to result in low opening rates. In 2019, the average opening rate in July and August was around 0.5% below the annual average.

Mobile optimization important

The importance of mobile optimization of mailings, especially in the end customer segment, is once again confirmed by the key figures of the Inxmail Email Marketing Benchmarks 2020: 55.7% of all emails were opened and read by the B2C target group using mobile devices in 2019. For the B2B target group, the desktop nevertheless remained highly relevant for reading mailings (46.3%).

About the study

The Inxmail Email Marketing Benchmark 2020 is based on around three billion anonymized emails from more than 170,000 mailings sent. The emails analyzed were sent between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 using the email marketing solution Inxmail Professional in the target markets of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Unless otherwise stated, the results are always the median of the key figures analyzed.

For the last two years, the email marketing provider Inxmail has also analyzed the performance of transactional emails sent with the Inxmail Commerce solution. Inxmail will publish these key figures in a separate study for the first time in 2020.

The Inxmail Email Marketing Benchmark 2020 is available to download free of charge.

NZZ responds to Corona crisis with savings program

According to the SonntagsZeitung, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung is planning a cost-cutting program due to declining advertising revenue. The program calls for job cuts. The Weltwoche has also applied for short-time work.

Neue Zürcher Zeitung

The SonntagsZeitung refers to a letter from the NZZ-Group CEO Felix Graf to the Personnel Commission. Despite the short-time work already implemented as a result of the coronavirus crisis, jobs would have to be cut, it was said. The management will present a concept to the Board of Directors at the end of June. It is not yet known how many jobs will be affected. However, a figure of a 10 percent reduction in staff is circulating in the newsroom. The letter would have caused a stir among the staff.

Weltwoche also applies for short-time work

At the same time reports the SonntagsZeitungthat the Weltwoche recently applied for short-time working after a long period of hesitation. Weltwoche-publisher and SVP National Councilor Roger Köppel told the newspaper that instead of talking about state aid in the coronavirus crisis, one should rather talk about compensation for damages. "Otherwise, you're also making the perpetrator of the economic crisis into a benefactor," he told the SonntagsZeitung. (SDA/hae)
