Update: Online help for parents in need

The Mütterhilfe Foundation is kicking off its 81st year with a new website. The website was designed and developed by the Zurich-based agency Update.

Since 1932, the Mothers' Aid Foundation has been supporting pregnant women, mothers, fathers and their partners when they are in psychological and/or financial distress. The aim of the politically and denominationally neutral institution was and is to relieve them of their greatest worries so that they can devote themselves to their child and the establishment of a stable parenthood with courage and confidence.

With the newly designed and built Website Mütterhilfe is stepping up its activities on the Internet. With just a few clicks, people seeking advice can find out about the social counseling, family support and parenting therapy services on offer. After registering, they can also access the free online advice service, where experts answer queries quickly, personally and individually. A download area for leaflets and brochures as well as an overview of helpful addresses complete the range of help on offer.

Simple donations

However, the new website is not only worth a visit for those affected, but also for specialists and supporters. The former will find information on the courses offered by the Mothers' Aid Foundation, while the latter will find simple ways to support the institution, which is financed exclusively by donations, contributions and legacies - be it with a financial donation via payment slip, e-banking or online with a credit card, or by donating baby and toddler clothes, toys and equipment that are no longer needed, which Mothers' Aid can pass on to parents in need via its free exchange.

The new Mütterhilfe website was designed and implemented by the Zurich-based internet and media agency Update. Particular attention was paid to ensuring that the various target groups - those affected, specialists, donors and sponsors - can quickly find the information relevant to them. The PHP framework and content management system "processwire" is used as the technical foundation.

Publicom launches media brand study

In an intermedia comparative pilot study, Publicom will for the first time in Switzerland determine the identity and charisma of the most important media brands.

In view of the proliferation of (digital) information and entertainment offerings, the brand charisma of a medium is becoming much more important. Only brands with a clear, distinctive profile will be able to hold their own in tomorrow's markets, according to a statement issued on Wednesday. The Mediabrands 2013 study, which focuses on Switzerland's most important media market, the Zurich economic region, will survey not only brand profiles but also the "total audience" and reach of the individual channels in Switzerland's most important economic region. The results are thus of interest not only to media providers, but also to the advertising market, which is increasingly demanding intermedia-comparable data. Initial results will be available at the end of April.

Tamedia hopes for largest BZM printing order

Tamedia will not only print the *Basler Zeitung* for Basler Zeitung Medien (BZM), but also the *Baslerstab* and a neighborhood newspaper. It remains to be seen where BZM’s largest printing contract—one-fifth of Coop’s newspaper circulation—will be placed.

As BZM is closing its printing plant at the end of March 2013, various BZM printing customers are faced with the question of where they will be accommodated in the future. It is already known that Tamedia's Bubenberg printing center may provide the printing of the Basler Zeitung. Now, both BZM and Tamedia confirmed on request that Tamedia will also print two other BZM titles: The free newspaper Baslerstab (twice weekly 171'000 copies each) and the Kleinbasel neighborhood newspaper Vogel Gryff (fortnightly 20'000 copies).

Half a million Coop newspaper copies still homeless

But it has yet to be decided who will take over BZM's largest regular print job in the future: a partial run of the Coop Zeitung and the Coop action magazine (510'000 copies each per week). The contract does not actually expire until the end of 2013, said Coop spokeswoman Denise Stadler when asked. Therefore, talks with other printers must now be held first. "There is more than one print shop in Switzerland capable of taking on this run," she held. The spokeswoman added, however, that Coop was not surprised by the premature cancellation of the print order. "We were informed by BZM in a timely manner," she said, adding that the matter would not have any legal repercussions.

Tamedia stands ready for Coop

BZM has apparently also given some thought to where the existing print customers could be accommodated. "The plan is to print all print jobs, as far as possible, at Tamedia's Zurich printing center from April 2013," said BZM spokesman Roger Berger. But can Tamedia, which already prints another partial run of the "CoopZeitung" (312'000 copies) in Bern and the French-language edition Coopération (419'000 copies) in Lausanne, even take over the half million Coop copies from Basel? "Yes," says Tamedia spokesman Christoph Zimmer, "because the Coop Zeitung can be printed during the day - and our printing centers still have enough capacity there." The company had therefore made an offer to Coop and all other BZM printing customers.

Specialty printer Birkhäuser is also under discussion

But the liaison between Coop and BZM is by no means limited to the BZM newspaper printing plant. Birkhäuser + GBC, BZM's specialist printing company in Reinach BL, is also "an important printing partner for Coop, especially for marketing and PR," as Stadler explains. Among other things, Birkhäuser prints posters, leaflets and brochures for the major distributor based in Basel. Now, however, BZM apparently also wants to sell Birkhäuser. This was stated by CEO Rolf Bollmann in an interview printed yesterday in the "Basler Zeitung". Original sound: "The biggest chunk is now the Birkhäuser printing plant, but that is not a restructuring case. We want to sell it."

However, a denial followed this morning: "A sale of Birkhäuser + GBC is being examined and is not yet certain (even if this came across differently in the Baz interview)," corrected BZM spokesman Roger Berger. Nevertheless - what would a sale of the specialty printer mean for Coop? The retailer is relaxed: "We would wait and see how the cooperation with the new owner goes," writes Stadler.

Private media want to stop SRG online offensive

The dispute between Swiss publishers and SRG over online offerings is intensifying. The SRG broadcasters' online presence, which was redesigned at the beginning of 2013, must be reversed, demanded publisher president Lebrument.

The long texts on the SRG broadcasters' online portals should be replaced by shorter news items, Lebrument demanded on Tuesday at the Epiphany Conference of the Swiss Media Association in Zurich in front of almost 300 industry representatives. The SRG portals should bring their audiovisual offerings to the fore.

No tricks

"The SRG's advance on the internet must be stopped. Publishers must prevent public radio and television broadcasters from using all kinds of tricks to try and operate a news portal," said Lebrument. This also applies to the SRG's ongoing efforts to place paid advertising on its portals. In mid-September 2012, the Federal Council banned the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) from advertising on internet portals for the time being. In return, the national government allowed the SRG to expand its internet pages in terms of journalism. The SRG and private publishers had previously failed to find a solution after two years of talks.

Miserable ratio

"There is a real war going on between SRG and private publishers," said Lebrument. The relationship between the two groups has never been as bad as it is today. In the days of Leo Schürmann and Antonio Riva, the SRG was still intent on striking a balance. That was a thing of the past. Today, the SRG is on a confrontational course. The Swiss Media Association has set up a task force to focus on problems relating to the SRG. The aim is to stop the expansion of SRG at all levels. Lebrument indicated that the publishers will use their weight at a political level to achieve this goal.

The Swiss parliament will soon be discussing changes to the radio and television license and a partial revision of the Radio and Television Act (RTVA). This will also involve the radio and television levy for everyone, including companies. Publishers fear that companies will spend less money on advertising as a result. Despite the dispute with the SRG, Lebrument showed a willingness to talk: "We are talking to each other, even if the tone has become harsher."

Gloomy forecast

The publisher president painted a gloomy picture of the environment in which private providers of press products currently find themselves. The year 2012 was unsatisfactory for many publishers. Smaller publishers were asking themselves whether they could cope with another bad year. Joining forces with one of the big players is being considered more seriously than ever before. The forecasts for 2013 offer little hope. (SDA)
