Press Council: Prison love, wild boars and perpetrator image

The Press Council has ruled that *Sonntagsblick* acted appropriately in its report on the «prison romance» of a detained offender. The «satire» in *Gipfel Zytig* was once again racist. And *20 Minuten* was permitted to show the London offender.

Is a newspaper allowed to report on the "new jail love" of a jailed offender? Normally not - but in the case in question, Sonntagsblick acted correctly according to the Press Council. For the Press Council, such reporting is in principle inadmissible, since private matters of a prisoner such as love affairs and marriage plans are none of the public's business. However, if a prisoner himself has previously actively contributed to such topics being discussed publicly in relation to his person, he must put up with it if a medium discusses his alleged new love affair against his will, according to a statement on Tuesday.

The Swiss Press Council rejects a complaint by a prisoner against "Sonntagsblick". In spring 2013, the newspaper reported on a new "prison love affair" of the complainant. In this specific case, the Press Council denies a violation of the privacy of the person concerned, as his case is one of the best known in recent Swiss criminal history. Since he was a public figure because of his offenses, the media were allowed to report on him in an identifying manner even 15 years after his conviction. Here, the duty of consideration for resocialization and the "right to be forgotten" should also be put into perspective.

In contrast, a prisoner's private life, such as love affairs and marriage plans, is basically none of the public's business. According to the Press Council, even if celebrities allow the public to share their private lives to a large extent, it can hardly ever be inferred from this that they completely renounce the protection of their private and intimate sphere. However, since the complainant himself repeatedly actively contributed to these topics being discussed publicly in connection with his person, he must accept that Sonntagsblick makes his alleged new love a media topic against his will.

Discriminating wild boars

Is a satirical article allowed to use an animal metaphor to indirectly spread disparaging prejudices about foreigners? No, says the Press Council. This is because satire may not serve as a cover for spreading discriminatory statements.

The Press Council approves a complaint against a satirical article in the Davos free newspaper "Gipfel Zytig". The latter compared the behavior of wild boars with sentences ("They don't wear headscarves! They don't use stolen bicycles, scooters or BMWs! They don't carry knives!") implicitly with that of foreigners. The punch line of the little photo story was: "But: They are allowed to be shot at!"

In its decision, the Press Council points to the historical tradition of incitement propaganda with animal comparisons. The disparagement of people of other ethnic groups, skin colors, religions, the opposite sex or a different sexual orientation has always used such animal images. Especially often rats, pigs, vermin and bitches were used for this purpose, on which supposed collective characteristics of such groups were superimposed. In the extreme case this goes along with destruction fantasies: Rats and vermin may be exterminated, or, as in this case, wild boars be shot. Even under the self-declared rubric of satire, such comparisons violate paragraph 8 (discrimination) of the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists." Already in January, the Press Council reprimanded the Davos paper on grounds of racism (Werbewoche.ch reported).

20 minutes: Perpetrator image was admissible

Does a picture showing a perpetrator immediately after he has committed an attack violate his human dignity? For the Press Council, such a picture is borderline. However, the publication in question did not appear sensationalistic and did not portray the perpetrator in a degrading manner.

In an attack in London in May 2013, two "Islamists" "beheaded" a soldier on the open street. 20 Minuten then published an agency picture on its front page depicting one of the perpetrators with bloody hands and a hatchet as well as a knife in his left hand. The Press Council rejects a complaint against the publication of this picture.

The picture does not show any victims and the crime has neither a local nor a regional reference. Therefore, it could hardly be assumed that the interests of the victims' and perpetrators' relatives would be significantly affected by the publication. From the point of view of the perpetrator's human dignity, it seemed questionable to show him gesticulating with the murder weapon immediately after his crime. However, the picture does not appear sensationalistic and does not demean the perpetrator. Together with the text, it documents the disturbing fact that such an act can happen in the middle of the street of a European capital. The picture - as difficult as it is to look at - therefore contributes significantly to the information. At most, it would have to be examined whether the newspaper should have made the perpetrator's face unrecognizable. Since the complaint does not object to the identification, the Press Council does not go into this aspect in greater detail.

Republica: United Grinding Group regrinded

Republica completely revamped the visual identity of the grinding machine manufacturer United Grinding Group, implemented numerous communication initiatives, and staged the company’s trade show presentation at EMO Hannover.

Only eight months remained after winning the pitch and starting the project for the redesign of the United Grinding Group's corporate image, according to a press release. In addition to the completion by the trade fair deadline, the scope of the measures was also a particular challenge. Republica developed a new CI/CD manual in six volumes for the United Grinding Group - formerly the Körber Schleifring Group - and its eight corporate brands (Magerle, Blohm, Jung, Studer, Schaudt, Mikrosa, Walter, Ewag) and had an extensive database set up. For the nine customer segments in which the United Grinding Group companies operate, Republica created corporate design routes with elaborate renderings: at the center of the visual world is the artwork of a metal plate, which serves as a background image for many communication measures. The newly created imagery will be used on advertisements worldwide in the future.

Each machine deserves its own brochure

Republica designed a total of more than 100 machine brochures for the high-tech machines of six of the group's eight corporate brands. These averaged 16 pages in thickness and were printed in up to four languages. In addition, there was a machine overview brochure, the Customer Care brochure, several brochures for internal use (for example, Strategy Booklet, Working Capital) and an app for field staff.

A performance that became the talk of the fair

The entire relaunch was geared toward one goal: the ceremonial unveiling of six new machines on September 16 at the Emo World Machine Tool Show in Hannover, Germany. Republica designed an invitation for Emo that would build excitement but not give too much away. As general contractor, Republica worked with Zurich-based agency Aroma to design a 1,200-square-meter booth that took into account the new machine design and CI/CD specifications in terms of shapes, colors and materials. A special highlight: the blue, "floating" LED sky of the booth. Republica staged the machine unveiling under the motto "The Rhythm Of Innovation" with the help of an intro film featuring participants from eleven countries, eight percussionists, ten professional dancers and 25 flash mob dancers. According to the press release, the production became a real "street sweeper" that generated a lot of discussion: more than 800 spectators attended it at the exhibition stand, and 2000 others followed it worldwide via live stream. In addition, Republica designed the EMO press kit, calendars, give-aways as well as screensavers and animations for the booth.

FBM realizes annual report for SVIT

FBM Communications has created an annual report in exercise book style for the Swiss Real Estate Association SVIT.

The unusual annual report, whose design was based on an old exercise book, contains coffee stains, sketches, notes and ink blots. The Zurich agency FBM Communications thus implemented SVIT's brief to design a bold and independent annual report that had never been seen before in this form. "In the end, we decided to design the annual report like a school exercise book, because SVIT is also bold, innovative and offers apprentices and professionals a wide range of training and further education opportunities," says Carmen Schiltknecht, Managing Director of FBM Communications. Tayfun Celiker, Director of SVIT, is also delighted with the visually unique annual report: "We are receiving positive feedback all round. The sometimes self-deprecating and witty elements of the annual report are well received by all target groups and skillfully lighten up the relative dryness of an annual report".

The SVIT annual report was produced in three languages: German, French and Italian.

Responsible at SVIT: Tayfun Celiker (overall responsibility), Martina Rutschmann (coordination). Responsible at FBM Communications: Carmen Schiltknecht (CD & Consulting), Dani Käser (AD), Renate Nusser (Graphics), Julia Trunkwalter (Order Processing), Elie Kerbage (PR & Media Relations).

Goldbach: Lukas Leuenberger new Chief Financial Officer

The Goldbach Group has appointed Lukas Leuenberger as its new Chief Financial Officer. The current Director Corporate Finance will take up the post at the beginning of October, succeeding Stephan Bergamin.

Bergamin has decided to leave the company at the end of March 2014 due to the Group's reorganization, the Goldbach Group announced on Monday. Bergamin wants to devote himself to new challenges. Furthermore, Klaus Nadler will join the Goldbach Group and its Executive Committee at the beginning of April next year. He will take on the newly created role of Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).

The Goldbach Board of Directors has also decided to withdraw from the business in the Czech Republic and to reduce its stake in Wilmaa Digital World. The divestment of the unprofitable sales hub in the Czech Republic was made in view of the difficult market environment, characterized by high price and competitive pressure. Goldbach has been unable to turn a profit in the Czech Republic for five years. Wilmaa, in which the Goldbach Group holds 67.3 percent, reduced its stake in its subsidiary Wilmaa Digital World from 75 percent to 20 percent on Monday.

Wilmaa co-founder Thomas Gabathuler will take control of the company, which has set itself the goal of tapping into the big screen for Wilmaa. Meanwhile, all marketing rights for digital moving images arising from the launch of the Box will remain with the Group. (SDA)

Scaph: Successful annual event

On September 15, the Swiss Communication and Marketing Association of Public Health (Scaph) met in Zurich for its first annual event. The main topic was crisis communication. Guest speaker Marco Cortesi bridged the gap between hospital and police communication.

"Exchange, inspiration and know-how transfer" - this was the motto of Scaph's first annual event at Zurich Children's Hospital. Over 20 communication experts from Swiss hospitals and clinics benefited from a varied and exciting event, according to the press release. In addition to the guest lecture by Marco Cortesi, media spokesperson for the Zurich city police, there was also plenty of room for personal exchanges and networking. In his presentation, Cortesi highlighted the interfaces between hospital and police communication in an extraordinary event involving both emergency organizations. He not only gave the audience important communication principles to take away with them, but also answers to the question of what hospitals can do for the police in the event of an incident. Inspired, the audience thanked him with a big round of applause.

In the second part of the event, current topics such as social media, employer branding and crisis communication were discussed in lively round tables. "In addition to an exciting keynote speech, the aim was to promote the personal exchange of experiences and the transfer of know-how among the participants," says Irene Dörig, Scaph board member and moderator of the event.

According to the press release, the event was a success. "We are delighted that our idea of a network among Swiss hospital communication and marketing professionals met with such a good response and that we were able to welcome almost half of our active members to our first annual event," says Irene Dörig, drawing a positive balance. Scaph is to be further anchored in the industry, the association's activities expanded and further members from all parts of Switzerland recruited.

Weber Harbeke Partners advertises herding service

With Citysitters, a new, hassle-free childcare service, Weber Harbeke Partners promises parents, children, and seniors a great time.

The first Citysitters branch opened in Winterthur on September 6, 2013. According to the press release, the uncomplicated babysitting service is aimed at children aged three to eleven and their parents who want to have some time to themselves. Without a guilty conscience. After all, anyone who gives their child to be looked after in order to do something for themselves is quickly accused of being selfish. But a visit to a well-run childminding service is an enriching experience for the children. Especially at Citysitters: for just five francs an hour, the little ones receive loving and patient care from senior citizens who have children and grandchildren themselves.

Weber Harbeke Partners dramatizes the fact that everyone has a good time here in a campaign in which the children make suggestions to their parents about what they could do just so that they can go to Citysitters themselves. As is often the case with start-ups, the timing was sporty. Within just a few weeks, a complete package was created for CitySitters, comprising a wide range of media: from logo and claim to flyers, outdoor advertising, opening invitations, staff clothing and press releases. The website in responsive design is already prepared for the opening of new branches and the booking option via smartphone.
