Downturn in the graphic arts industry continues

The downward slide in the graphic arts industry continues. In the past, gross value added fell by 5.4 percent to 4.5 billion Swiss francs compared to the same period last year.

As in the two previous years, both domestic and foreign demand fell. This means that the real value added level of the graphic arts industry has fallen by more than 30 percent since the turn of the millennium, the Swiss Association for Visual Communication Viscom announced on Wednesday. Structural changes in the industry, weak demand from abroad and the strong Swiss franc have all taken their toll on the graphic arts industry.

"It is no secret that the industry is undergoing a powerful structural adjustment process," Viscom Director Thomas Gsponer told the media in Zurich. The competition of printed products from the Internet or mobile media is great, he said. "There is less printing in Switzerland." In addition, there is enormous pressure from abroad, where printing is much cheaper. Imports of printed products have risen massively, he said. (SDA)

Jim & Jim implements social media video series

Jim & Jim, an agency specializing in youth and student marketing, conceived, created, and produced the multi-part video series «Orange Insiders» for the telecommunications group Orange.

In short interviews, Orange's in-house experts impart technical expertise or provide information about apps and product specifications, among other things - in a way that is easy to understand even for "technical dummies," as the agency writes in a statement. On the wall panel in the background, what is said is illustrated in the form of amusing animations. The short films can be accessed via Orange's social media channels and are distributed in particular via Facebook.

The concept of "Orange Insiders" is constantly being developed and expanded. To date, 6 videos have been produced in German and French. Jim & Jim has also been implementing various activation campaigns for Orange since 2013, such as the one for the sponsorship commitment at "Energy Stars for Free".

Republica launches the "Songolog" for Radio Bern1

Republica designed and implemented a new advertising campaign for Radio Bern1. At the heart of the campaign is a TV commercial in which the characters communicate with each other using well-known song titles—the «Songolog.».

"Musig wo's bringt" is the focus of the new advertising campaign. In addition to news and entertainment, the radio station stands for a lot of musical variety with hits from four decades as well as the best pop and rock songs of today, according to the agency. It is precisely these songs that are the focus of the new TV commercial, which can now be seen on TeleBärn, 3+, 4+, TV24 and in cinemas in the Bern region. In it, the protagonists engage in a so-called "songologue": they have a conversation using well-known song titles - with a surprising outcome. The video is flanked by matching posters and advertisements in the Radio Bern1 broadcasting area.

Tamedia enables automated purchasing of digital advertising

20minuten.ch, Newsnet - consisting of the seven news sites of 24heures, Basler Zeitung, Berner Zeitung, Der Bund, Le Matin, Tribune de Genève and Tages-Anzeiger - and search.ch will be making parts of their digital advertising inventory available for automated purchasing from July 2014.

Advertising customers of the sites belonging to the Tamedia media group can thus automate and simplify complicated and time-consuming purchasing and sales processes. This type of digital marketing is currently in a major growth phase worldwide, writes Tamedia in a press release. In the future, a relevant proportion of digital advertising expenditure is expected to be generated via this channel.

The option for the automated purchase of digital advertising space on 20minuten.ch, Newsnet and search.ch, which together reach over 74% of all Swiss internet users (Net Metrix Profile 2014-1), will be available from July 2014. In the initial phase, the IAB standard formats and individual large formats will be offered. These can be purchased by language area and run of site from a certain minimum price.

Technical partner: Improve Digital

The independent provider of real-time advertising technology, Improve Digital, which already works with more than 100 of the top publishers in Europe, was chosen as the technical partner for an initial test phase. The new system will be operated by Tamedia's Digital Advertising & Services team, which will be strengthened by Rui de Freitas, a specialist in real-time advertising and programmatic buying, from August 1, 2014. Rui de Freitas will act as a point of contact for agencies, clients and internal contacts. The 27-year-old de Freitas was most recently in charge of the Improve Digital project at Publicitas and, as Automated Trading Manager, introduced and expanded the topic of real-time advertising on the local.ch and home.ch platforms.

Last but not least: private cab via smartphone

In various European cities, taxi drivers have protested against competition from ride-hailing services like Uber. This is because these services allow private individuals to offer rides via a smartphone app, which are usually cheaper than standard local taxi fares.

The drivers wanted to express their displeasure with services where private individuals can hire themselves out as drivers. This business is conducted via smartphone. The cab operators consider the competition to be unfair because the strict regulations for their industry do not apply there. A representative of the US transport union presented a letter to the Washington city council during the action on Wednesday. The letter called for a temporary ban on competing services until new regulations are passed.

The focus of the outrage is the Californian company Uber, which now offers its services in 128 cities in 37 countries - including Zurich. Among other things, it offers private individuals the opportunity to offer rides via a smartphone app, which are generally significantly cheaper than the local cab fares.

Uber users were thus reminded by the protests that there is a cheaper ride service than a cab ride. The rest were made aware of this by Uber itself. Uber responded to the protest in Washington with a mass e-mail advertising campaign to its users. Uber also responded to the Europe-wide day of action by cab drivers on June 11 by calling on stranded cab customers to use its services instead. Despite all understanding for the anger and concern of cab drivers, Uber knows how to make clever use of the free attention. (uma/SDA)

Polyconsult: Battery-Man returns

The battery recycling campaign is entering its second phase.

Battery-Man has been fighting against batteries in waste for two years. And with success. Over 56% of the target group know the superhero, over 33,000 fans follow him on Facebook and the return rate for batteries has risen from 69% to 73%, according to a press release issued on Wednesday.

But around 30 million batteries still end up in Swiss garbage bins every year. This inglorious figure is now taking center stage in the second communication stage. In TV commercials, on posters and, of course, on Facebook.

Last but not least: real-time marketing with bite

The number one global topic on social media since Tuesday evening has been the shoulder bite suffered by star footballer Luis Suarez. Anyone who reacts spontaneously to such an event with a creative message can generate a lot of attention online.

The fact that the Uruguayan footballer bit his Italian opponent Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder has been the subject of much discussion in recent days. Sneakers was one of the first brands to respond to the burning interest of the target audience with this Twitter image (which has already been retweeted 40,000 times) within just under two hours:

In Switzerland, too, the interest of fans was put to good use. Büro Troxler from Lucerne has been promoting the Lucerne Association of Orthodontic Specialists on various social media channels since Wednesday morning with three matching images. (sis)
