Basler Zeitung has new owners

Rolf Bollmann, Markus Somm, and Christoph Blocher are each acquiring one-third of the Basler Zeitung from Medienvielfalt Holding.

According to the statement, the aim is to guarantee a daily newspaper for the Basel region and the whole of Switzerland in the long term, which offers journalism of a high standard, independent of the major Zurich publishers and independent of state subsidies. In this way, BaZ intends to "deepen its leading and opinion-forming role in northwestern Switzerland". The three new owners will take seats on the board of directors. Rolf Bollmann takes over the chairmanship and will act as delegate of the board of directors, Markus Somm remains editor-in-chief and publisher, Christoph Blocher acts as member of the board of directors. Each shareholder will take over 33 percent, with Christoph Blocher increasing his 20 percent share, which he already owns, to 33 percent. Medienvielfalt will continue to be linked to BaZ with a loan, which will be repaid as soon as the financial consolidation of the company is achieved.

"We are convinced," says Rolf Bollmann, "that we can produce an outstanding daily newspaper that is profitable and uses its economic independence to publish reliable research, captivating texts and high-profile commentary." The seller and buyer have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

TBWA: Royal Pleasures for McDonald's

TBWA\Zurich shows that when a classic like the Cheeseburger Royal gets a promotional line extension, even those accustomed to luxury lose their composure.

The result: they spill over ruffles, décolletés and silk vestons. Because now the royal is not only available with cheese, but also with chili or Sauce Deluxe. You can pay homage to the royals on billboards all over Switzerland and, of course, at McDonald's itself.

Last but not least: The beautiful Esther Honey

In an experiment, journalist Esther Honig asked photo editors from more than 25 countries to «enhance» her appearance using Photoshop. The results couldn’t be more different.

Photoshop has become a symbol of society's unattainable beauty ideals in the United States, according to Esther Honig. The journalist was concerned with the question of whether there are also global standards when it comes to retouching a female face to "perfection". As an experiment, soe sent an unedited portrait of herself to 40 graphic artists from over 25 countries on freelancer platforms such as Fiverr.com. Mission: "Make me beautiful".

Unbenannt-4_38

The image editors are partly professionals, but also amateurs (which some of the returned images cannot hide). The results range from hair-raising to quite acceptable and show: The aspired ideals of beauty differ greatly. A Moroccan graphic artist even gave her a veil. The ideas of what is beautiful also seem to diverge greatly in other respects. Nevertheless, it seems a bit adventurous to draw conclusions about the taste of entire countries or cultures from the results of individual image editors. And: It was actually most beautiful before these Photshop heroes lent a hand. (hae)

Magazines from abroad still too expensive

Für Zeitschriften aus dem Ausland muss in der Schweiz nach wie vor zu viel bezahlt werden. Dies hat die Westschweizer Konsumentenorganisation Fédération romande des consommateurs (FRC) erhoben.

In June, magazines from Germany were 49 percent more expensive in Switzerland than in their country of origin. The price difference for Austrian magazines was 41 percent, according to the FRC. In the case of magazines from France, the differences have narrowed somewhat since the surveys began in 2012. In 2012, the price difference was still 69%, at the beginning of 2013 it was still 57% and has since fallen by a further two percentage points. The biggest price differences can be found among magazines from Italy. The difference there is 124% and has even increased. The reason for this is a fall in prices in Italy, according to the report. Swiss poster of the year: positive results

APG|SGA successfully concluded the "Swiss Posters of the Year" tour in St. Gallen at the end of June. After three months and seven exhibitions in Switzerland’s three language regions, the company reports positive visitor numbers.

That is why national poster art will once again be given a nationwide platform next year, according to a press release. The tour was on display for three months at a total of seven locations throughout Switzerland, including—for the first time this year—Ticino and French-speaking Switzerland. It began in April in Basel, continued on to Lugano, Bern, Lucerne, Lausanne, and Zurich, and concluded in St. Gallen. The public had the opportunity to view the winning posters from the «Swiss Poster Awards» as well as a small selection of regional cultural posters. In a public contest, exhibition visitors voted for their favorite local poster via smartphone and the internet and, with a little luck, had a chance to win an iPad mini.

Each poster exhibition opened with a vernissage, to which representatives from the advertising industry, local authorities, and regional institutions were invited. Following the official speeches, slam poet Renato Kaiser took the stage. The poet had composed his own highly entertaining rhymes inspired by the award-winning posters. The exhibitions in public spaces lasted about a week and attracted a great deal of attention in bustling city centers: «We’re delighted by the positive response from the general public, which shows that this tour of the best Swiss posters will be a particularly memorable event,» said Markus Ehrle, CEO of APG|SGA.

Next "Swiss Posters of the Year" Awards in the Works

Entries for the «Swiss Poster Award 2014» are now being accepted. The festive awards ceremony will take place at the «Swiss Poster Night,» which is scheduled for March 2015. Following the event, the winning entries will once again be showcased to the public at various locations throughout Switzerland. The goal is to make the country’s poster art accessible to a broader audience and thereby raise awareness of the benefits and striking impact of posters. Whether traditional, in special formats, or in digital form: Since 1941, APG|SGA has supported the recognition of creative outdoor advertising, which has been honored annually for the past few years in collaboration with a twenty-member expert jury.

Last but not least: Would you buy this apple?

Most customers in the store reach for the flawless apples, eggplants, and other produce first. A recent campaign from France is successfully raising the profile of misshapen fruits and vegetables.

Every year, around 300 million tons of fruit and vegetables end up in the bin - partly because they don't fit our image of a beautiful apple or a well-formed eggplant. For a long time, anything that didn't meet the usual standard didn't even make it onto the shop shelves.

A campaign by the French supermarket chain Intermarché is now taking action against this food waste. The posters by the Parisian agency Marcel show fruit and vegetables "unadorned", just as they often look in reality. These originals have recently been available to buy at a 30 percent discount in all Intermarché stores. They are obviously selling like hotcakes. (sis)

Sonntagsblick journalist reports to public prosecutor

A journalist from the *Sonntagsblick* made a sensitive statement to the public prosecutor's office regarding the Mörgeli affair in the case against CVP National Council member and university council member Kathy Riklin.

Riklin had been reported by Christoph Mörgeli. The public prosecutor's office in Bern is investigating her on suspicion of violating official secrecy because she allegedly made remarks to journalists in the lobby of the National Council that an expert report on the dissertations supervised by Mörgeli, which had not yet been published at the time, was not in his favor. This is according to the NZZ am Sonntag.

As is now known, the public prosecutor's office already questioned two witnesses in February. A journalist from Schweiz am Sonntag did not provide any substantive information as he could no longer remember. In contrast, his colleague from Sonntagsblick provided detailed information about his conversation in the Federal Palace during questioning. The journalist testified, although the public prosecutor explicitly informed him of his right to refuse to testify. Journalists have this right so that they can protect their sources from prosecution.

When asked, the journalist said that the conversation with Riklin was "not confidential". "If we journalists try to protect sources at every opportunity, we weaken its value," he added.

Dominique von Burg, President of the Press Council and former editor-in-chief of the Tribune de Genève, however, condemns the Sonntagsblick journalist's actions as unethical. Except when, for example, life and limb are at stake in a kidnapping, journalists should always remain silent about the conversations they have had with the law enforcement authorities, says von Burg. "If journalists' interlocutors have to expect that their statements will be reported to a public prosecutor, this undermines trust in the media and hinders them in their important function in terms of state policy," says von Burg: "If this sets a precedent, no one will say anything to journalists anymore." (NZZ am Sonntag)

CS advertises mortgage advice that relaxes

Im Juli 2014 lanciert Havas für Credit Suisse eine Kampagne zur Bekanntmachung ihres Beratungskonzeptes im Bereich Hypotheken.

In four striking motifs, we experience the emotional added value of specialized services on the subject of mortgages at Credit Suisse, according to a statement on Friday. In them, people happily present their own home and lean contentedly in the entrance to their house - by turning the motif by 90 degrees, they appear just as relaxed as if they were just lying on a bed. The idea is to make it clear that you can be completely relaxed thanks to mortgage advice from Credit Suisse.

The campaign includes advertisements as well as various POS, POI, online and BTL measures.

Swiss Confederation attests to SRG's economic efficiency

The Swiss Radio and Television Company (SRG) has all the important control elements in place to ensure that the money is used economically. This is the conclusion reached by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) in a report.

The structures and instruments as well as the implemented control and monitoring processes of the SRG are overall appropriate, Bakom announced on Friday. They are tailored to the size and structure of the company and comply with the principles generally recognized as best practice in the field.

However, Bakom also identified some areas for improvement. Among other things, it recommends that SRG have the performance of the Board of Directors assessed by independent, external consultants on a selective basis - for example, every three years.

This would allow an external view of the board of directors, which is not possible through the annual self-assessment, the report says. On the other hand, Bakom considers the composition and size of the board of directors to be appropriate.

Too many targets

Bakom considers the number of strategic goals to be too much of a good thing. The question is whether all 26 can be managed with the necessary attention, the report says. Bakom therefore recommends reducing the number to a maximum of 20.

Overall, however, the report gives SRG a good report card. SRG has a high quality of corporate governance and a clear vision, mission and strategy.

Flawless financial planning

Bakom also has nothing to complain about in financial planning. According to the report, the financial planning process and the available management tools meet the required quality criteria and are used efficiently. The internal audit department contributes to the ongoing improvement of efficiency by identifying potential savings and opportunities for process simplification.

Bakom has scrutinized SRG on behalf of the Uvek. In connection with
of the revision of the Radio and Television Act (RTVA), which is currently being debated in parliament, the Uvek considered it appropriate to subject the SRG's economic efficiency to an audit. The report published on Friday is the first of a total of three. The second report will focus on harmonized cost and performance accounting, financial reporting and real estate management. The third report will focus on purchasing and procurement of services, human resources and advertising acquisition. The
Reports to be published in 2015 and 2016. (SDA)
