Shining Pictures strengthens creative competence

Olivier Egli is joining the executive team at Shining Pictures as a partner and creative producer. With this move, the Zurich-based production company is expanding its range of services in the areas of concept development and storytelling.

Stefan Bircher, Partner and Producer at Shining, sees this strengthening as a strategic step: "Companies, agencies and directors already see us not only as implementers, but also as conceptual sparring partners. This is fun for us and leads to stronger films. With Olivier Egli, we can anchor this creative dialogue in our organization." In many film productions today, directors and creative producers are already involved in the concept phase, often as part of agency and production evaluations.

Goldbach Interactive: App for Tamedia's Sunday titles

Goldbach Interactive has developed a web app for Tamedia's publications *Sonntagszeitung* and *Le Matin Dimanche* that allows readers to access the full print content on their tablets or smartphones.

The online readership benefits from an expanded offering that supplements the print version with web-specific content. The app for the Sunday newspaper was successfully launched in the spring - and Le Matin Dimanche has now also been available digitally in a brand-new layout for a few days. The web app, designed and implemented by Goldbach Interactive, offers a consistent reading experience on all devices thanks to adaptive design. The app is equipped with the latest web technologies and implemented entirely in HTML5.

News-WebApp_ResponsiveDevices_Mockup

An important part of the developers' considerations was the use of the tablet. The device has become a standard tool with which readers consume news and entertainment. Consequently, the web app also makes optimal use of the possibilities of portable devices and offers everything a tablet user's heart desires with a swipe function, offline mode and touch screen.

News-WebApp_Tablet_Mockup

In order to appeal equally to existing and new readers, the new online offering is simultaneously available in a PDF format based on the print layout and a specially developed online layout. The complete digital offering of the two Sunday titles is available in various subscriptions or as individual editions. Le Matin Dimanche also offers the magazines Femina, Télétop Matin and Encore! The content of the web app is fed by a sophisticated import of the content of the print edition: This is automatically converted after completion, supplemented as required with web-specific content such as image galleries or videos, and thus made available to users.

The new web app is intended to further strengthen the position of the two titles Sonntagszeitung and Le Matin Dimanche in the digital market.

Responsible at the Sunday newspaper: Diego Quintarelli (overall responsibility), Remo Fehr (concept, project management). Responsible at Le Matin Dimanche: Florence Ruffetta (Responsable Marketing Le Matin Dimanche & Encore! Tamedia Publications romandes), Annik Essoh (Digitel project manager Tamedia). Responsible at Goldbach Interactive: Andrea Dätwiler (Project Management), Helmut Lasser (Technical Management), Stefan Bakocs, Bunni Khun, Yannick Weiss (Development).

Last but not least: Campaign à la Mike Shiva

VW's Side View Assistant detects what's happening early on. So does the accompanying campaign.

Especially those who like and drive older cars will have long since lost track of the current jungle of assistance systems. Today, there is an electronic helper for every potential human weakness - even if it's just convenience. Modern cars not only park themselves, but also get out again without a driver. They brake when danger threatens. And so on. And with every feature, the driver becomes a little less independent and more dependent on technology that he no longer understands anyway. As long as it works. At least people still have to steer themselves for the time being. But this is set to change soon - if Google has its way.

One of the more useful assistants seems to be the side view or blind spot assistant. As it warns - nomen est omen - of other vehicles when they are in the invisible side area.

Bildschirmfoto-2014-10-15-um-19.04.45

To advertise the VW system, Ogilvy & Mather South Africa came up with a campaign that requires one thing above all: flexible media planning. The subjects and commercials do nothing other than predict to the recipient which advertising placement they will see or hear next. The announced follow-up campaigns have nothing to do with VW, but should certainly not object to the additional boost in attention.

This works very well in newspapers, for example:

Bildschirmfoto-2014-10-15-um-18.49.47
Bildschirmfoto-2014-10-15-um-18.50.13

...or at the roadside:

Bildschirmfoto-2014-10-15-um-18.50.25

...but also in radio and TV commercials, where the idea is particularly effective. You can see and hear corresponding examples in the casemovie below. In this case, the idea seems to be at least as innovative as the advertised technology. (hae)

Easyjet convicted for bait-and-switch advertisement

Jean-Marc Thevenaz, the CEO of Easyjet Switzerland, was fined 500 francs by the Zurich District Court on Wednesday for a misleading "bait-and-switch" advertisement.

He is also ordered to pay the court fee of CHF 900 and the costs of CHF 400 for the municipal court. An advertisement for the airline Easyjet appeared in the commuter newspaper 20 Minuten on November 22, 2013. The company offered cheap flights for 28.40 francs to 19 destinations in the UK. The Zurich city police noticed the advertisement. They classified it as illegal. The police noted that the company did not fly to 19 destinations, but only 14, and that no flights could be booked from Zurich. There was also no information on which specific flight the price of around 28 francs referred to.

Misleading prices

In March 2014, the Zurich municipal court issued a penalty order against Thevenaz. In it, he was sentenced to a fine of CHF 300 and a fee of CHF 330 for violating the Price Disclosure Ordinance through misleading price disclosure and inadequate specification in advertising. The municipal judge stated that no flight from Zurich was so cheap. Thevenaz lodged an appeal against the penalty order, but refrained from appearing in person at the Zurich District Court. Instead, he was represented by his lawyer on Wednesday. He demanded a comprehensive acquittal. The defense lawyer described Easyjet's advertising model as a key element of its marketing. The advertising complied with the legal framework. However, he described the incorrect number of destinations as a mistake that had since been corrected. In principle, however, it was a permissible advertising model. The lawyer also argued that customers could reasonably be expected to check the availability of prices on the Internet.

Conviction and increased sentence

However, the court did not follow this argument. It found him guilty of unfair competition and increased the fine to 500 francs. Thevenaz was also ordered to pay the court fee of 900 francs and the costs of 400 francs for the municipal court. The court allowed the error in relation to the 19 destinations to go unpunished. But not the fact that no flight was bookable at CHF 28.40 in Zurich. The impression was created that Easyjet was offering flights to 19 destinations in the UK at this price. "But this was not the case," the court chairman explained. According to the court, at the time the newspaper advertisement was published, only flights from Basel/Mulhouse to Manchester were available on individual days in January and February 2014 at a price of 28.40 francs. This was misleading. It should have been pointed out that only certain flights in January and February were bookable at the stated price, the judge explained. The court therefore ruled that the advertisement was an inadmissible bait-and-switch advertisement.

Thevenaz accepts the verdict, Easyjet announced on Wednesday evening. Thevenaz emphasized in the statement that Easyjet had never deliberately wanted to deceive customers. The court also confirmed the correctness of the published price. (SDA)

Tourists who use Google to find out where to ride elephants arrive in time thanks to a clever Adwords campaign.

Word should have gotten around by now: It's best to give all animal attractions a wide berth when on vacation. Where profit beckons, animals usually suffer. This also applies to activities that many holidaymakers wrongly classify as harmless because they don't know the background. Example: riding elephants. An experience that causes unspeakable suffering to pachyderms. Would you have known that?

Bildschirmfoto-2014-10-14-um-17.51.25

Education is needed - preferably before the mistakes are made. BBH London has therefore come up with a campaign for the organization World Animal Protection that gets to the root of the problem. Elephant rides are very popular with tourists. One million people a year start a search query on Google to find out about the possibilities. In order to educate these tourists in good time, the agency created the website of a fictitious elephant tour provider and displays it as an advertisement at the top when the relevant terms are searched for.

Bildschirmfoto-2014-10-14-um-17.42.25

The website of "Authentic Elephant Rides" does indeed look authentic and leaves no doubt at first glance that you have found what you are looking for.

Bildschirmfoto-2014-10-14-um-17.54.24

Anyone who clicks on the promising-looking YouTube film is greeted by an upbeat presenter who enthusiastically explains the background to the elephant business. Just like in a real commercial, she explains that elephants, by nature, don't actually want anyone on their backs - and how this is made possible anyway.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzU8Jx4q4Q0

The film manages without any shock images - the distressed, chained elephant at the end and the woman's account should be enough to make you adjust your vacation plans accordingly. Those who have been enlightened are invited to make the information available to other potential elephant riders. By making a donation on Beforetheybook.org further Adwords placements are purchased. A counter provides information on how many Googlers have already been informed - and how often the terms have been searched for without an informative intervention. The campaign uses modern methods to address the target audience precisely without using up resources unnecessarily. Elephantastic! (hae)
