BVK affair: Arthur Rutishauser acquitted

The Zurich District Court has acquitted Zurich journalist Arthur Rutishauser. The defendant had reported on the BVK affair in two articles in 2012, repeatedly quoting from the then still secret Puk report of the Zurich Cantonal Council.

Due to the great public interest in the BVK scandal, the court on Thursday acquitted 49-year-old Rutishauser of the charge of publishing official secret proceedings. The penalty order of the governor's office of the district of Zurich was thus annulled. The latter had found Rutishauser guilty in March 2013 and sentenced him to a fine of 800 francs. According to the indictment, the current editor-in-chief of the Sonntagszeitung had published two articles about the corruption case at the BVK pension fund in the Tages-Anzeiger on August 28, 2012, and September 10, 2012. In doing so, he quoted around a dozen times passages from the draft of the final report of the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (Puk) of the Zurich Cantonal Council, which was still kept under lock and key.It was thus perfectly clear to the defendant that he had quoted from a secret paper "which was therefore not intended for the public," the criminal order of the governor's office stated.

Public interest outweighed

The district court now saw it differently and followed the defense's argumentation. In this case, the defense had rated the public interest higher than official secrecy. The defense counsel also claimed that Rutishauser had fulfilled all his journalistic duties. In addition, the in-house lawyer of the Tages-Anzeiger had also given his blessing to the reports before they were published. After weighing up the interests involved, the court acquitted Rutishauser and awarded the defendant compensation of 3,000 Swiss francs. He had known that the report was secret. But in this case he could invoke grounds for justification, the president of the court explained. The verdict is not yet legally binding. (SDA)

Last but not least: Playful waiting

Two years ago, two German students came up with an idea for how to make the wait at traffic lights more enjoyable for pedestrians. Now «Street Pong» is becoming a reality. Finally!

Waiting at certain pedestrian crossings at certain rush hours is really annoying. The classic: you press the traffic light button frantically in the hope of speeding up the change to green. In vain. It's not unusual to get the feeling that the traffic lights are switching to an extra red phase as punishment.

It is hardly surprising that Sandro Engel and Amelie Künzler, two students at HAWK Hildesheim University of Applied Sciences and Arts, caused a worldwide sensation with their idea in 2012: they transferred Pong, the mother of all video games, to the traffic light boxes. "Street Pong" was born. The idea was that it would one day be possible to play with people waiting opposite while waiting for the green phase. In Pong, you play a ball back and forth and try to hit it out of bounds on the opponent's side.

//vimeo.com/48514003

What is shown in the movie makes sense across the board - but unfortunately it's just a well-made and fairly real-looking simulation. That's the bad news.

The good news: the two developers spent two years eliminating technical hurdles, clarifying security issues, calculating development costs, looking for partners and founding a company. The result is that "Street Pong" is now a reality. On Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 3 p.m., at the traffic lights in front of the HAWK building Goschentor, the game celebrates its launch according to Communication World premiere. And hopefully conquers the world afterwards. Because the two creative minds deserve it. And more importantly: because people will want to play Pong at traffic lights in the future. (hae)

Publicis continues to lead BSW ranking

The BSW ranking included companies for the first time in 2014. However, this did not change the top of the list: Publicis and Wirz continue to lead the list.

For the first time in the history of BSW Leading Swiss Agencies, the association is publishing a newly compiled ranking. This summarizes companies that appear on the market under the same brand or own subsidiaries that are also BSW members - for example, media agencies that are dominated by communications agencies.

Despite this new recording method, little has changed in the ranking of the largest advertising, media, branding and communications agencies at the top. The first two places are held by the same names as last year, Publicis Communications Switzerland and the Wirz Group. Behind them are the Y&R Group, Leo Burnett Switzerland and the Havas Group Switzerland, followed by Jung von Matt and Contexta.

The ranking of BSW agencies primarily serves to provide transparency, but also as an orientation aid for clients when choosing an agency. Less than 10 percent of all advertising agencies based in Switzerland meet the association's high quality standards and have been accepted as members of BSW leading swiss agencies, according to a statement. Currently, the association counts a total of 72 individual agencies, two more than in the previous year.

Advertising, branding and communication agencies

The 2014 ranking of the leading communications agencies in Switzerland is based on the gross operating revenues (GOS) of 2013 (see "Explanations on the ranking"). With a few exceptions, all members of the association participated in the ranking. The 56 advertising, branding and communications agencies of BSW generated a total of around CHF 312 million in gross operating revenues in 2013, 3.7 percent less than in 2012.

Basis BBE 2013

BBE = gross operating income: agency's own services charged to clients, incl. freelancers: fees from consulting of all kinds, compensation for textual, graphic and other work according to the income statement, excluding VAT and transitory items or income of other kinds. The agencies are listed within the respective category according to effectively achieved BBE.

A carefree winter with Franz & René

Franz & René is continuing its campaign for the auto service provider Euromaster and building trust ahead of the upcoming winter season.

After the summer season under the supervision of the Lifguards the Euromaster campaign for the 2014 winter season focuses on the theme of the mountain guide and thus on confidence for a safe journey through the winter. The concept of the guide, who accompanies and monitors drivers in both summer and winter, is an expression of Euromaster's positioning: In the best hands.
The key visual, a rope team led by the Euromaster guide, can be found again this time on various supports: on APG posters, in radio spots, on POS material, flyers and web banners.

The campaign surprises motorists in the heart of the cities of Lausanne and Zurich by means of a barrier covering in the Riponne and Urania parking lots. The loyal guide reminds visitors that a professional check guarantees a carefree drive through the winter.

Advico: When commercial breaks ruin the movie

Nothing spoils the enjoyment of feature films quite like commercial breaks. Advico Y&R illustrates this point in a striking way: by inserting brand logos into famous movie titles, they completely ruin them.

But luckily there's Teleclub. There you can still watch movies the way they were intended - without annoying interruptions. The subjects can be seen on posters in the Zurich area.

Not only did the guests enjoy branded mineral water with the extended claim "Thirsty for 5 billion and beyond!", they were also given a special door hanger on arrival: "Please don't disturb, I'm working on 5 billion and beyond!" So you could sleep through one or two workshops with a clear conscience.

Wanted: the best holiday cards

To honor particularly beautiful, exceptional, and appropriate holiday cards, Swiss Post is presenting the «Nicolas – Prix Carte de Noël» for the second time.

All Swiss companies and organizations can register their festive and New Year cards until December 24, 2014. A personal thank you at the end of the year makes every customer happy. Festive and New Year's cards are an individual sign of appreciation and - provided they stand out and leave a lasting impression - strengthen customer loyalty. Swiss Post and evoq communications AG are therefore rewarding particularly creative festive cards with the "Nicolas - Prix Carte de Noël". All Swiss companies and organizations that produced an individual, printed card on the theme of Christmas or the turn of the year in 2014 and sent it by post are eligible to apply free of charge.

The Nicolas Award is presented in three categories: "The Most Beautiful," "The Most Extraordinary," and "The Most Appropriate. The five-member jury looks at factors such as the surprise effect, the combination of colors, typography and text, and the material chosen. The winners can look forward to a Nicolas Award - a trophy in the form of a snow globe to shake.

The idea of the "Nicolas - Prix Carte de Noël" is obviously well received: For last year's prize, 131 companies and organizations from all sectors - from small painting businesses to large corporations - applied. The closing date for this year's competition is December 24, 2014 (postmark). The winners will be notified in January 2015. Further information, conditions of participation and entry form: Post.ch/nicolas

The "Prix Carte de Noël" was launched seven years ago by the Evoq agency and relaunched in 2013 together with Swiss Post (Werbwoche.ch reported). Last year, SBB secured the prize and won an Epiphany cake (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Tamedia takes over Doodle completely

The Swiss media group Tamedia is investing in the appointment scheduling platform Doodle and now holds all shares in the online company.

The founders Michael Näf and Paul E. Sevinç and the Innovation Foundation of Schwyzer Kantonalbank as a minority shareholder have sold their 51% stake as agreed in 2011. Following the successful handover of operational management to Michael Brecht in February 2014, Michael Näf and Paul E. Sevinç are stepping down from the Board of Directors of Doodle with the sale of their shares.

In recent months, the appointment scheduling platform has continued to invest in internationalization under the leadership of new CEO Michael Brecht. This strategy has been rewarded with a significant increase in sales. Today, Doodle already reaches more than 20 million users per month worldwide. The scheduling platform, which is available in 17 languages, is planning to open an office in Berlin in 2015, from where ten employees will support its international growth.

According to the announcement, the parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
