TBWA for McDonald's: Three new spots for the Swiss weeks

TBWA\Zurich has developed a trilogy of commercials for McDonald’s Swiss Weeks. The commercials address minor issues related to Swiss dishes.

In everyday life, it can happen again and again that a rösti burns. Or that the raclette oven, together with other plugged-in electrical appliances, blows the fuse in an old apartment. The actors in the commercials also remember such mishaps. They eat a McRaclette, a McRösti or a McFondue at McDonald's and are happy that they are spared such mishaps at the fast food giant.

3+: Market share up again in September

3+ continued to make gains in September. With a market share of 5.3%, Switzerland's largest private channel was in 4th place among the most-watched channels for the first time and on a par with Pro7.

The channel, which was founded three years ago, reached over 40 percent more viewers in the first nine months of 2009 than in the same period last year. According to its own figures, 3+'s current figures are therefore ahead of those of international competitors such as SAT1, ORF1, RTL2, ARD, ZDF, Kabel1 and VOX. In September, 3+ was able to catch up with Pro7 for the first time with a market share of 5.3 percent, putting it behind SF 1, SF 2 and RTL.

The growing popularity of 3+ is also confirmed by the Brand Asset Valuator (BAV), a study by the Young & Rubicam Group. In the international brand study, which analyzed the change in brand vitality of over 40,000 brands in the years 2000 to 2009, the young Swiss television station was ranked 26th among the rising stars of the new millennium in Switzerland.

Migros makes TV: in-store media at the point of sale

Melectronics has launched a new communication channel under the name Mel-TV. In the future, all 108 stores will be supplied with a uniform TV program. The new format is intended to enliven the point of sale and present the range of products to customers in moving images.

Until now, the TV screens in Melectronics stores have shown the program selected by the respective sales outlet. Now, the uncontrolled growth is being tackled. With Mel-TV, the Migros electronics store wants to create a national identity. The focus is on product information. The different program sections, such as brand visuals, home entertainment, partner advertising or local content such as competitions or promotions, are separated from each other by chapter intros and short advertising clips. Interspersed calming blocks are also intended to prevent the program from becoming too hectic.
Different templates are available to the branch managers for local content. This allows each branch to produce its own content in addition to the nationwide broadcast program, if required. Changes and additions to the program are possible at any time. For example, spots of products that are sold out can be removed immediately. The program is broadcast nationally in three national languages, all produced and broadcast in full HD. The program content is critically reviewed and revised on a monthly basis.

Collaboration of Sony Professional Solutions, Content & Form and Ultra Images
The general contractor for project planning, rollout through to content creation was Sony Professional Solutions Switzerland. Sony Professional Solutions, the advertising agency of Melectronics Inhalt & Form and the full-service agency for moving images Ultra Images were responsible for the programming and content creation. Ultra Images has been archiving and managing all of Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund's moving images for many years and has been processing Melectronics' image content for more than two years. Other tasks in this project include program planning and content maintenance.

Last but not least: The farmer calendar wants to Austria

This year's Swiss Farmers' Calendar will be released on Tuesday. At the same time, the publishers are announcing plans to expand into Austria next year. In the neighboring country—particularly among those involved with the local Young Farmers' Calendar—people are not at all pleased about the competition from Switzerland.

In Austria, of all places, the country of origin of the farmers' calendar, the publisher of the Swiss farmers' calendar, Mike Helmy, now wants to publish his own paper. In doing so, Helmy is directly attacking the Austrian Young Farmers' Calendar, which four years ago still served him as a source of inspiration for the local calendar. Meanwhile, resistance is forming in Austria. Shortly after the plans were announced, the Farmers' Union Youth countered with the launch of an anniversary edition and a hip party to mark the 10th anniversary. The motto: "Skimpy lederhosen, six-packs and natural sensuality - young farmers present anniversary edition".
Mike Helmy nevertheless reckons he has a chance: "I've always admired the Young Farmers' Calendar, but lately it's just given up." Now people want "more quality" again, and the new farmer's calendar is just what they need. Helmy is also confident that his calendar has been able to increase its circulation from 5,000 to 18,500 copies within five years. This year, it even received an award from the Calendar Marketing Association in the USA. It remains to be seen whether there is room for two calendars in Austria. In any case, the publisher is accepting registrations of Austrian beauties as of now.

Publicis: Turning the world upside down for Garnier

Publicis has turned the world upside down for Garnier's new hairspray. The poster designs are meant to show that the hair products provide the perfect hold for any hairstyle.

The poster motifs were developed in line with the guiding principle that you shouldn't turn people upside down in advertising to attract attention - unless it really has something to do with the benefits of the product, the advertisers said in a press release.

Weber Harbeke: The brands are at the airport

Weber Harbeke Partners has designed a campaign for Unique (Zurich Airport AG). The campaign promotes the wide variety of shopping options available at the airport.

The campaign motifs dramatize the various services of Airport Shopping: for example, "More fashion than you can wear" draws attention to the new fashion stores, "Show your growling stomach your teeth" advertises the many catering options and "So that everything is done quickly, except you" shows that you really can find everything under one roof. To further emphasize the diversity of the offer, the texts stand on a background with all the logos of the brands present in Airport Shopping. The subjects can be seen as posters and advertisements in and around Zurich Airport. The print motifs are flanked by radio spots in the airport's catchment area.

France: Young people are reading newspapers again - thanks to free subscriptions

Since early October, all French citizens between the ages of 18 and 24 have been able to subscribe to one issue per week of a daily newspaper of their choice free of charge. The newspapers provide the copies free of charge, and the government covers the delivery costs.

The French government's decision to support the ailing press industry with additional subsidies totaling 600 million euros over the next three years has caused some controversy in the European media industry. Since the beginning of the year, there has been a lively debate as to whether it is justified for the state to provide the press, which is struggling with falling advertising revenues and readers migrating to the Internet, with large amounts of funding.
According to the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), the French concept of free subscriptions for young adults has been proving its worth for several years. For example, the highest-circulation regional daily newspaper Ouest France has increased its readership in the 18 to 24 age group by 22,000 in three years, according to Pressetext.ch.

Management tools: Wemf consumer study analyzed

Since September, the Management Tools research institute has been offering a new service based on data from Wemf Mach Consumer. The company has reorganized and linked the target audience information from the consumer study.

The results of this work include new clusters on topics such as fashion, housing, money and the use of brands. The analyses are possible for the whole of Switzerland, for regions or individual economic regions. The cooperation enables companies and organizations to plan their measures in more detail and measure their success without conducting their own survey, the companies announced on Monday. With around 11,000 interviews, Mach Consumer is the largest consumer survey in Switzerland. It provides insights into the Swiss population's consumer and leisure behavior, health and mobility, for example.

M-Travel: Minority stake in event agency

M-Travel Switzerland will join the Worldspan Group effective November 1, 2009. The Zurich-based company operates in the event, incoming, and incentive sectors.

The communications and event agency Group Worldspan employs twelve people and has a turnover of around ten million Swiss francs. With the shareholding, the tour operator will benefit from Group Worldspan's network and range of services, the company announced on Monday.

JvM /Limmat: The greatest SI Style of all time

The advertising agency Jung von Matt/Limmat has created an oversized mailing for SI Style. A giant issue, measuring 50x70 centimeters, promotes the reach of Switzerland’s largest women’s magazine to agencies and potential advertisers.

Wemf has confirmed it: With 420,000 readers, SI Style is the biggest celebrity and fashion magazine in Switzerland. Jung von Matt/Limmat has developed a special mailing for SI Style to communicate this success story to advertising and media agencies as well as advertising customers. The current issue of the magazine is published as "Riesen SI Style". Although the special edition has slightly fewer pages than the original, the content is otherwise identical, as Lukas Frei, Creative Director at Jung von Matt/Limmat, told Werbewoche. Only the editorial differs from the normal edition and is aimed directly at potential advertisers: SI Style has made itself both especially large and especially small with the special edition, it says. The print format is especially large at 50×70 centimeters, but the print run is all the smaller at 400 copies.
Analogous to the mailing, the agency designed web banners in which a rolled-up SI Style unrolls when the mouse pointer is moved over it. To complete the media package, advertisements were placed in industry-relevant titles. The ads and banners have been in use since mid-September and the magazine in giant format will be delivered in October.
