China: Own media group to improve image

The Chinese government wants to set up its own media group for several billion dollars along the lines of Western companies such as News Corp. or Time Warner. This is primarily intended to improve the image of the People's Republic abroad.

According to the Communist Party's plans, various companies from the fields of culture, entertainment and news will be united under one corporate umbrella. The holding company would be subject to the rules of the market, as reported by the New York Times. The companies are to be given the opportunity to launch projects with the help of private investors - both for the domestic market and for export. According to Spiegel Online, experts assume that this will also include the news business. In the recent past, Beijing has gradually expanded state television to include English-language programs and productions aimed at audiences outside of China.

Dispute over the publication of the minaret posters

The provocative minaret poster has been met with opposition in many places. The city of Basel has already banned the SVP’s ad campaign on the minaret ban initiative from public spaces. Media outlets are also struggling with the decision of whether to publish the ads.

Although the pro-committee has not yet commissioned any advertisements in the press, the first publishers have already announced that they will not publish the motif with the mosque towers shooting out of the ground like rockets. Riniger refuses to publish the poster: "The advertisement equates minarets and Islam with violence," Ringier spokesman Stefan Hackh told Bazonline.ch/Newsnetz. However, an advertisement with a different subject or a pure word advertisement by the initiative committee would be examined. It is not yet clear whether Tamedia will also refrain from publication. The decision lies with the publishing directors of the individual publications. In particular, Tamedia spokesperson Christoph Zimmer said that they would wait for the opinion of the Federal Commission against Racism (FCR). The NZZ is taking a wait-and-see approach: if a request is received, publication will be examined in consultation with the editor-in-chief and publishing house management, said spokeswoman Bettina Schibli.

Digital radio: SRG switches on further radio stations

SRG will be broadcasting more programs on the DAB+ standard from mid-October 2009. From the end of 2012, all SRG radio stations throughout Switzerland are to be broadcast using the new standard.

With DAB+ digital radio, World Radio Switzerland (WRS), "The first Swiss Radio in English", will now also be receivable in German-speaking Switzerland. In French-speaking Switzerland, the radio station DRS Musikwelle will be added. In Ticino, DRS 1 and La Première will now be available on DAB+. In Graubünden, SRG has already been broadcasting all radio stations in the Swiss-German program range in DAB+ format since October 2008. A transition period until the end of 2015 at the latest should enable listeners to switch to DAB+. Until then, SRG will continue to broadcast some programs in DAB. FM broadcasting will remain in place.

Last but not least: New subjects for the Sunday newspaper campaign?

Does this sound familiar? Did you just think of that Sunday newspaper ad campaign? Then you're way off the mark...

At first glance, you might think that the subject bears the signature of Advico Young & Rubicam - the agency that created the well-known poster campaign for the Sonntagszeitung. On closer inspection, however, it quickly becomes clear that something must be wrong: the same guy is always pictured - and who is he anyway? A well-known politician? No, the man staged as a manikin is the American actor Paul Giamatti. And the poster advertises the newly produced film Cold Souls, a new Hollywood production that describes itself as a "soul searching comedy" and in which Giamatti plays the leading role.
The advertisers at Advico Young & Rubicam are delighted. They see themselves as a source of inspiration: "From time to time, advertisers get their inspiration from various areas of art. It's all the more gratifying when it works the other way around," they comment. So the current poster campaign seems to have actually made it to Hollywood. Or was it pure coincidence?
