Financial services and automotive brands lose out - consumer goods brands benefit
As the ranking shows, Europe's financial services and automotive brands have been hit hardest by the crisis. Financial services brands lost an average of 24 percent in brand value, while automotive brands lost 9.6 percent. The British banking group RBS (-40%), the German Allianz Group (-18.5%) and car brands such as the Fiat Group, Mercedes and Porsche have been hit the hardest.
Consumer goods brands are the winners of the crisis and were able to increase their brand value by 5.8%. The outperformer of the year is the Belgian Inbev Group, which was able to increase its brand value by 56% thanks to the successful acquisition of the US brand Budweiser. Mixed groups such as SAB Miller (+24.5%), Carlsberg (+21.5%), Nestlé (+15%) and Heineken (+14.4%) were also able to realize considerable increases in brand value, Gerhard Hrebicek, Director of the European Brand Institute, was quoted as saying in a press release.

Germany remains brand center
Germany remains Europe's leading brand center despite the crisis. In terms of absolute brand values per country, German brand companies lead the European brand landscape. Eight of the sixteen industry leaders, such as Mercedes, SAP, Adidas, Deutsche Bank, Siemens, Deutsche Post, TUI and EON are "made in Germany". Italy's and Norway's brand landscape and in particular the British financial services brands, such as RBS, HSBC and Barclays, are suffering the most from the crisis.
Rising star of the year is the Russian telecommunications brand Beeline Russia's most valuable brand Beeline made it into the top 40 and represents the first CEE brand in Europe's top 50 ranking of the most valuable brand companies in Europe.

Tunisia: Journalists and students arrested

Since President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's election victory on October 25, Tunisian authorities have arrested or mistreated several opposition journalists and students. Human rights organizations fear that the crackdown is part of the measures announced by Ben Ali against critics of the election process.

Taoufik Ben Brik, correspondent for the French weekly newspaper Nouvel Observateur, was arrested last Thursday. According to Brik's lawyers, the well-known opposition journalist is facing several years in prison. In the articles, Ben Brik had criticized the elections in which Ben Ali was confirmed for his fifth mandate since 1987 with around 90 percent of the vote.
The Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH), the World Organization against Torture (OMCT) and the Euro-Mediterranean Network for Human Rights (REMDH) called on the embassies of EU countries in Tunisia to visit Ben Brik and Zuhair Makhlouf, another journalist in detention, and observe their trials. Makhlouf was arrested on October 21 and is due to stand trial on Tuesday. He is accused of filming in a poor neighborhood without permission.
Journalist Slim Boukhedir, on the other hand, had criticized President Ben Ali's wife in an interview with the British broadcaster BBC. Last Wednesday, he was abducted by unknown persons, presumably police officers in civilian clothes, in front of his house and driven up a hill. There he was beaten up and left with a broken nose. His clothes and wallet were taken from him.
The student Mohamed Soudani disappeared without a trace on October 22. He had been interviewed by two French journalists in a hotel in Tunis, said his lawyer Radhia Nasraoui. When he left the hotel, around a dozen police officers were waiting for him. He had been able to leave a message on her voicemail, but since then there had been no sign of him. Ten other students who had taken part in a sit-in for more accommodation were also arrested at the weekend.

Last but not least: The beer brand as an expression of personality

Feldschlösschen or Heineken? Which beer brand are you loyal to? Or do you change the type of beer depending on your mood? No matter which group you belong to, your choice of brand reveals a piece of your personality.

Yes, that's right, personality is not only reflected in the choice of clothing or car brand - the brand of beer also reveals a lot about the drinker. The American market research company Mindset Media has now gotten to the bottom of the concept of "beer as a window to the soul". The brands studied included Budweiser, Heineken and Corona beer. It has been shown, for example, that the Corona drinker is a party type - extroverted and sees more people in one day than others do on average in a week. The Heineken drinker, on the other hand, can be described as a "poser". He is self-confident and likes luxury products. He loves to be the center of attention.
In addition to the different types of beer, people who constantly change beer types were also examined: Those who change brands frequently are open to new things. The research institute also has a clear idea of beer refusers: socially conservative, black and white, tradition-conscious, longing for authority. But what about the local beer drinkers? How does the Feldschlösschen drinker differ from the Ittinger or Quöllfrisch drinker, for example? Please forward any study results to Werbewoche immediately.

Unknown people provoke with prejudices against disabled people

A new campaign on APG billboards is causing a stir. The posters feature slogans directed against people with disabilities. It is not yet known who is behind the campaign.

The posters feature slogans such as "Disabled people only cost us money", "Disabled people are always ill" and "Disabled people are a drain on our pockets". APG does not yet want to answer any questions. However, it confirmed to 20 Minuten that a customer had commissioned the posters. The umbrella organization for the disabled, Pro Infirmis, also does not know who launched the campaign. The Federal Social Insurance Office knows who is responsible, but does not want to say anything to Radio Top. A spokesperson merely emphasizes that the poster campaign is in no way directed against disabled people. It remains to be seen how this is resolved.

Sales are handled by the sales outlets in the respective regions. Other publishers are set to join the concept next year, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.

Comedia: No higher minimum wage for booksellers

The social partners—the Swiss Booksellers and Publishers Association (SBVV) and Comedia—were again unable to reach an agreement during the second round of wage negotiations. The media union is demanding an increase in minimum wages.

Within two weeks, more than ten percent of all bookstore employees had supported Comedia's demand by signing a letter of protest. With the current zero round, the SBVV has missed the connection to the reference wages in the retail trade - to the detriment of the book trade employees and to the detriment of the quality of the entire industry, writes Comedia in a communiqué on Tuesday. In the book trade, the minimum salary after a three-year apprenticeship is CHF 3,800. Young people are thus turning away from the industry despite their idealism when retailers such as Lidl, Coop (4,000 francs) and Migros (3,900 francs) pay higher minimum salaries.
The book trade is suffering only slightly from the economic crisis compared to other sectors, the report continues. Sales have only fallen by 2.2 percent compared to the very good previous year (latest figures August 2009).

Edipresse: Staff directly informed - Comedia excluded

On Monday, the Western Swiss media company Edipresse informed the employees affected by the cost-cutting measures. The Comedia union has criticized the fact that it was excluded from the meetings.

Serge Reymond, CEO of Edipresse, told the SDA news agency that Comedia's claims were sowing doubt and the incomplete statements were causing uncertainty. For this reason, the management decided to inform the staff directly in several meetings. Several hearings and negotiations took place over the course of two weeks. The Impressum professional association found the results to be correct, said Reymond. However, he had "great difficulty" in understanding Comedia's position.
Bernhard Remion from the Comedia trade union said that Edipresse had not complied with their demands for a "proper" social plan. Remion also criticized the exclusion of the staff committees and the union from the meetings.

Photographers severely affected
Staff from the print shop and technical services have announced protest actions for next Wednesday. On the editorial side, the photographers are particularly affected by the cost-cutting measures, said Ludovic Rocchi, journalist at the daily newspaper Le Matin after the information event.
However, the costs accounted for by the in-house photographers were far too high, said Rocchi. The figures provided by the auditors were "completely wrong". They were around four times lower than stated. The number of photographers is to be reduced by around a third.
