Council of States committee in favor of indirect press funding

As committee president Peter Bieri (CVP/ZG) explained to the media in Bern on Tuesday, a minority unsuccessfully requested an increase in indirect press subsidies as part of the detailed discussions on the Postal Services Act. They wanted to increase the subsidy for the postal delivery of daily and weekly subscription newspapers from the current CHF 20 million to CHF 30 million. For the membership and foundation press, it demanded CHF 20 million instead of the current CHF 10 million. The majority did not want to hear about this for financial reasons, as Bieri explained. However, the KVF had decided to abandon the time limit on the previous subsidies until 2014 and 2011 respectively. The decision on indirect press subsidies was one of the last committee decisions in the detailed consultation on the Postal Services Act and the Postal Organization Act. Both laws will be discussed by the Council of States in the winter session.

In addition, the conditions for those made redundant have been improved. "The implementation of the social plan for the printing plant employees is subject to equal control." According to the union, Edipresse could have made even more concessions to the employees, "but under the current circumstances, we are pleased with what we have achieved". However, the trade unionist regrets that the media company is not prepared to accept short-time working or early retirement for employees under 63.
Around 115 employees affected The reduction of around 100 jobs announced by Edipresse still applies, but eleven employees are taking early retirement, around 15 are leaving the company voluntarily and around 30 have reduced their workloads. At the beginning of October, the media company announced that it would be cutting 50 jobs in the print shop, 30 in the editorial offices and 20 in production.

The purchase price is 750 million dollars, which Google is paying in its own shares. However, the deal still requires the usual antitrust approval, the company announced. Since June 2009, Google has been displaying ads in programs for the Apple iPhone and cell phones with the Android operating system on a trial basis. More than one billion of these have been downloaded onto the Apple iPhone and iPod alone since the launch in July 2008. Other companies now also offer online stores with the additional programs. For the programmers, advertising could be an additional source of income alongside the sales price.
