Z. B.: Image campaign developed for commercial vehicle association

The advertising agency Z.B. Werbung has launched a nationwide campaign for the Swiss Commercial Vehicle Association (Astag). The goal is to improve the image of the trucking industry.

The agency writes in a press release that this is not an easy task: "Thousands of commercial vehicles are on the chronically overcrowded roads every day. All too often and wrongly, the more than 6,000 Swiss transport companies and their exponents are made the main culprits for this situation. Not to mention the emissions that allegedly pollute our air. Without trucks, however, nothing would work in Switzerland. And: Swiss trucks meet the highest ecological standards - so the pollutant emissions are clearly within limits.
A cinema spot, a series of posters, distribution campaigns organized by the sections, postcards and, last but not least, a lot of word-of-mouth advertising thanks to the tens of thousands of employees involved in the transport industry are intended to spread this message. For example, in the first phase of the campaign (November 2009 to January 2010), advertising is using the strong statement "The truck has it all" and the accompanying resolution Who-else.ch - Among other things, the website set up specifically for this purpose contains the most important facts, a truck test and success stories relating to the transport industry. The campaign is a long-term affair - it is to be further developed and continued in the coming years.

Bertelsmann: Black figures thanks to savings program

Bertelsmann is back in the black. Europe's largest media conglomerate posted a profit of 87 million euros between July and September.

This is almost four times as much as in the same quarter of the previous year, Bertelsmann announced on Wednesday, according to SDA. Revenues fell by 4.5 percent to 3.6 billion euros. In the first half of the year, the Group posted a net loss of 333 million euros due to weak advertising markets and high goodwill write-downs. As a result, Bertelsmann initiated the largest cost-cutting program in almost 175 years of company history. The television subsidiary RTL Group had reported an initial recovery in the advertising markets the previous day.

Axel Springer with less profit

Axel Springer earned less in the first nine months due to the advertising crisis. Adjusted for special factors such as the sale of shareholdings in regional newspapers, profits amounted to 130.1 million euros.

According to SDA, the Berlin-based media group reported a profit of 165.4 million euros in the same period of the previous year on Wednesday. Without adjustments, Springer reported a net profit of 317 million euros, compared to 560.5 million euros a year ago. Turnover fell by 5.4 percent to around 1.89 million euros.
"In view of the current development of the advertising market, we are maintaining our cautious outlook for the year as a whole," said CEO Mathias Döpfner. In the third quarter, Springer reported an unexpected increase in operating profit of 10.2 percent. Previously, the publisher and its flagship Bild had stated that operating profit and sales in 2009 would be significantly below the record figures achieved in the previous year. Other media companies have also not yet seen an end to the advertising crisis, despite the upward trend in economic indicators. Europe's largest media group Bertelsmann, for example, is threatened with the first annual loss in its history.

Kasimir Meyer: Workshop event with "Faltsch Wagoni"

More than 100 guests attended this year’s traditional Kasimir Meyer workshop event in Wohlen. They enjoyed the «Herz in Fahrt» program presented by the group «Faltsch Wagoni.».

Silvana Prosperi and Thomas Busse delighted the audience from the very first minute and the guests quickly realized that once again they were not sitting in the "faltschen Wagoni" at the workshop event. The program was spiced up with wonderfully absurd couple dialogues and scenes. Poetically playful texts were excellently translated into music. The "Herz in Fahrt" program was a sensual treat for the eyes and ears, heart and mind. The event ended with the traditional, homemade dessert buffet.

Swiss Press: 6th Q-Award presented

Six entries were submitted for the 6th Q-Award, presented by the Swiss Press Association to recognize outstanding trade publications. The jury awarded the 2009 prize to the weekly newspaper «htr hotel revue.» The five other entries all received honorable mentions. In doing so, the jury expressed its appreciation to the industry for the significant improvement in performance, which also extends to the online sector.

The market for hotel and restaurant trade magazines is diverse and highly competitive, according to a news release. A title founded in 1892 and long positioned as a traditional association organ is particularly challenged in this environment. With its 2007 relaunch, "htr hotel revue" changed not only its external appearance but also its product personality - with success, as has been shown.
Since this thorough relaunch, the newspaper no longer appears as a lobby-driven proclamation organ of the association's leaders, but as a journalistically conceived and realized current weekly newspaper in broadsheet format, which signals a high standard of content, it continues. The diverse and complex linking of the hotel industry and tourism with current social and political dossiers is excellently expressed in the choice of topics and forms of presentation. "The form corresponds to the content and - especially important - to the character of the industry, which is committed to the cultivated enjoyment of life and comfort based on quality. The appearance and layout of the paper are sensual, attractive and image-emphasized. The lengths and the journalistic forms of presentation vary in a pleasant way. Major topics that the industry wants to convey to the outside world are also given the necessary run-out in length."
Commercially, "htr hotel revue" cleverly takes into account the requirements of the market by concentrating its efforts on the processing of the job market and on the quarterly realization of the supplement "Hotelwelten" ("Hotel Worlds"), which focuses on hotel planning, furnishing and operation. The latter does not yet seem to have arrived in the online world, whereas with www.hoteljob.ch a good position in the industry-specific job market was achieved. The jury was very pleased with the carefully edited and beautifully designed online edition of the weekly newspaper, which shows the potential to become a daily industry portal. (www.htr.ch)

Five further nominations at a high level
In contrast to previous editions, this year the jury was satisfied with the level of "cruising altitude" of all the projects submitted. Not a single one really fell off; more than one, on the other hand, seems to have the potential for future awards.
Alimenta - trade journal for the food industry (D/F)
The inherently difficult marginal conditions (bilingualism, bi-weekly publication frequency) are cleverly compensated for. The visual appearance is neat, but somewhat stiff; the Internet presence (www.alimentaonline.ch), on the other hand, is pleasantly tidy and user-friendly.

GS1 network
The periodicity (4 x yearly) prevents topicality, but promotes the deepening. This actually calls for a strong, up-to-date supplement on the web, but this is not yet apparent. The focus on sectors is good, which also makes planning easier for advertisers. Despite the lack of infographics, the use of images is generally good in a topic world that is decidedly text- and form-heavy. (www.gs1.ch)

Family doctor practice
Appears in a distinguished, somewhat academic, aloof impression, but thus undoubtedly adequate for the conservative target audience. The jury particularly liked the consistent thematic focus (continuing medical education, e.g., regarding MCI/dementia/Alzheimer's disease, coronary heart disease, etc.), the understandable language, which nevertheless reveals a clear scientific profile, and the intelligent use of infographic elements. Design and accessibility of the internet offer, especially in the area of continuing education (CME) could be improved. (www.springer-medizin.ch)

OTX World
Despite free distribution and a clearly commercial objective, the independent magazine for the Rx and OTC market in Switzerland stands out for its journalistic and often critical approach to the selection and treatment of topics. Health policy topics are often treated controversially, which is undoubtedly appropriate. Pleasant format, clear layout, good labeling of commercial contributions ("Company XY informs..."); results of the 2009 relaunch not yet visible, networking with online less successful. Travel Manager
Swiss monthly magazine for the travel industry. Ten years of proven track record and commercial success in the turbulent travel, hotel and airline industry command respect. In keeping with the tradition of the journalistic publishing house, the topics are tackled in a critical and constructive manner, personalized and the differences are openly addressed, which creates credibility and trust. The jury was somewhat disappointed by the quality and variety of the illustrations. In contrast, the online presence is well calibrated. (www.travelmanager.ch)

Swisscom: Less revenue, more profit

In the first nine months of 2009, Swisscom generated slightly lower revenue of CHF 8,925 million (previous year: CHF 9,085 million) compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the company was able to increase its net profit by 16.6% to CHF 1.5 billion.

However, the increase in profit is primarily due to special effects, without which the result would have been more or less stable. In the Swiss business, sales fell by CHF 220 million, which is attributed to ongoing price erosion as a result of competition and deregulation. New offers and customer growth were unable to compensate for this.
Bluewin TV and iPhone on the rise
By contrast, the digital television business developed extremely positively: The number of Bluewin TV customers almost doubled compared to 2008. The iPhone business is also proving successful: since its launch in July 08, Swisscom has sold 330,000 devices.
Swisscom is sticking to its original forecast for the current financial year: the Group expects business to decline, with revenue excluding Fastweb down by CHF 300 million to between CHF 9.2 and 9.3 billion. The operating result (EBITDA) is expected to be between CHF 3.8 and 3.9 billion.

Ruf Lanz: New prevention theme developed for Suva

The Ruf Lanz agency has created a new ad campaign for Suva. It features two real wild boars on a chairlift.

32 percent of all sports accidents in Switzerland are winter sports accidents. People often ski too fast and recklessly on the slopes. This results in collisions with other winter sports enthusiasts and numerous, sometimes serious accidents - with corresponding costs for Suva. The Suva brand Suva Liv has already appealed to the personal responsibility of winter sports enthusiasts with several campaigns in recent years. The latest motif from the Ruf Lanz agency has also caused a stir. It shows - against an idyllic mountain backdrop - two real wild boars in a chairlift. Because that's how certain winter sports enthusiasts behave. The appropriate message is: Don't leave your manners in the valley. Ski with consideration.
The motif will be used on advertisements and posters in Swiss ski resorts. And should help to decimate the number of piste hogs this winter.

Responsible at Ruf Lanz: Markus Ruf, Danielle Lanz (Creative Direction), Torsten Maas (Text), Grit Wolany (Art Direction), Kristina Burch (Consulting).
