Apple and Amazon under suspicion of price fixing

Die US-Justiz nimmt Apple und Amazon unter die Lupe. Wegen Preisabsprachen bei elektronischen Büchern würden Leser zu viel bezahlen, so der Verdacht eines Staatsanwalts.

The agreements between publishers, Amazon and Apple led to uniform prices for many of the most popular e-books. In addition, competitors were forced out of business, the prosecutor stated. He is particularly bothered by a clause in the contracts according to which the publishers must always grant both Amazon and Apple the best price for e-books. This ensures that competitors hardly get any special conditions. Amazon is one of the pioneers in the electronic book market with its Kindle reading device; Apple has been able to win over many publishers for its new iPad tablet computer. Another major provider is the US bookstore chain Barnes & Noble with its Nook reader. The three have been engaged in a price war over devices for weeks - but the prices for bestsellers seem to have been cemented.

Emmi: Packaging relaunch and repositioning with plenty of Swissness

The dairy processor Emmi is repositioning its products under the umbrella brand «Emmi.» Typical Swiss symbols and a silhouette of a mountain peak in red and white are the key elements of the new, uniform packaging. The goal is to attract more consumer attention and make it easier to find products on the refrigerated shelf.

As part of the relaunch, products from the white (dairy and fresh products) and yellow (cheese) lines will be placed under the same brand umbrella. From August 2010 and in the following weeks, around 150 products will be given a new,
uniform packaging. This includes products such as Toni yogurt, Emmi Birchermüesli, Emmi Griess Töpfli, Vorzugsbutter, as well as Winzer, Swiss Alp, Couronne and Emmi Raclette at the cheese counter. The brand pillars "Emmi Caffè Latte", "Kaltbach" and the "Wellbeing" division (Aktifit, Benecol) will remain independent. "As a Swiss company with products made from Swiss milk, we want to communicate the origin to consumers in a simple and understandable way," Robin Barraclough, Head of Marketing Emmi Group, is quoted as saying in a statement. The start of the classic campaign - TV, print and new online presence - is September 1.

Responsible at Emmi: Robin Barraclough (Head of Marketing / Katharina Müller, Group Brand Manager). Creative agency (for classic media): Scholz & Friends Zurich, Wolfgang Steinhaus (Managing Director). Packaging design agency: The Brand Union Hamburg, Elke Pietzsch (Consultant Director). Blick: Paid app in high demand

Seit vergangener Woche bietet Ringier eine Blick-App für iPhones an. Es ist die erste Medien-App in der Schweiz, für welche die Benutzer etwas zahlen müssen. Der Verlag zeigt sich zufrieden. Genaue Download-Zahlen will Ringier jedoch nicht nennen.

Users are obviously prepared to pay for the content, as Ringier spokesperson Edi Estermann told the SDA news agency. Downloading the Blick app costs CHF 4.40. The subscription costs, which will be charged after the 30-day test phase, are not yet known. According to Estermann, the pricing model will only be defined in the next ten days. The internal discussions about whether Ringier wanted to rely on paid content for the Blick app or not were long and intensive, said Estermann. There was agreement that an app consisting only of news should not cost anything. "News is always available for free somewhere." However, if the product offers much more than news, it could also be a success for a fee.
Based on its initial experience with paid content, Ringier now wants to expand its range of paid applications: Sports apps are planned, for example a tennis app or a Formula 1 app. An ice hockey app, which is to be launched at the start of the ice hockey season, will definitely be realized. The football app, which the media group launched for the World Cup in South Africa and is now being fed with information from the Super League, will also remain in operation. According to Estermann, it is unclear how much the sports apps will cost in future.

Last but not least: MBT shoes - beautiful looks different

People who wear MBT shoes may be doing something good for their health. Visually, however, they’re not doing themselves any favors. As far as design goes, the shoes are a clear failure. Just as unsexy as the shoes themselves is MBT’s new brand identity.

1290580809_img100803_mbt

The MBT shoes are not an eye-catcher. But you still have to look. The same goes for the new poster. The motif seems thrown together and somehow seems pointless. For example, what is the dog doing on the wooden walkway, why the diver, where is the woman going anyway and what is the point of the scrap of fabric that somehow had to be on it? Never mind, it doesn't have to be pretty. Informative is more important, and it certainly is (see picture below)...

Green Graffiti Switzerland was responsible for the creation and execution. The international network, headquartered in Amsterdam, focuses on sustainable advertising and primarily creates advertising on the ground using high-pressure cleaning machines. However, advertising messages are also applied to meadows, facades, snow or ice. The local branch is in Lausanne.

Last but not least: Behavior in Web 2.0

Etiquette experts are not at all pleased with what’s going on online. Good manners have to be learned—even on the Internet. That’s why the German Etiquette Council has developed rules of conduct for Facebook and other social media platforms.

Twelve recommendations are intended to ensure confidence in social networks. For example, you can make some mistakes when choosing a network: "Think critically about which networks are suitable for you." The decisive factor here is whether the platform is used privately or professionally. Business partners or superiors who you wouldn't call "friends" in real life won't become such on Facebook either. In addition, no overly intimate information and not every emotional outburst needs to be posted online. Think first, then write. No clumsy confidences, always remain friendly and make sure you use the correct form of address and a polite farewell greeting. Also be careful with users who have as many contacts as possible on their list. The etiquette advice knows: this is not necessarily a sign of quality! Now there's not much that can go wrong. Still unsure? Etiquette helps further.
