Flower pot triggers hype on Twitter
With her article "Big flower pot destroyed," editor Katharina Hövels manages to become a Web.2.0 star overnight. Her article appeared in the Münstersche Zeitung MZ and effortlessly catapulted her into the top 5 worldwide trending topics on Twitter.
Hövel reports on a flower tub that has been knocked over in front of the entrance to the Antoniusstift retirement home. The next day, her editorial colleague Ralf Heimann tweets: "A flower pot has tipped over in Neuenkirchen. More than 2,000 followers see this tweet - and the madness takes its course.
According to Netzwoche.ch, the fallen flower pot is now the top topic on the German web. It already has more than 2,500 fans on Facebook, and on YouTube the group "Free the Flowers" is taking responsibility for the tragic events in Neuenkirchen with a confession video. The international Twitter community has also caught wind of the incident and is asking, "Why the heck is #Blumenkübel a trending topic worldwide?" (@SandraArendt) - @sambamyesmaam replies: "#blumenkübel sounds like a German sex position!"
The newspaper MZ itself has meanwhile supplied several follow-up articles. It defends itself against the accusation voiced by @BrandNewWelt that it has started a viral marketing campaign. The MZ would always report if local concern was given, justifies itself MZ editor Gerald Meier-Tasche.
