Sevenone Media terminates marketing agreements with Publicitas Cinecom & Media

Sevenone Media will no longer be working with Publicitas Cinecom & Media in 2011. IP Multimedia won the bid to handle the marketing for Sat.1 and Kabel eins.

The cooperation between Publicitas Cinecom & Media and Sevenone Media will not be continued after the end of the year. "It was with regret that we learned yesterday afternoon that Sevenone Media will not be extending the marketing contracts for Sat.1 and Kabel eins beyond 2010," says Alexander Horrolt, Head of Electronic at Publicitas Cinecom & Media. IP Multimedia has won the race for the marketing of Sevenone Media. From 2011, it will no longer only represent the ProSieben channel, which it has been marketing since 1997, but also Sat.1 and Kabel eins.
Detailed justification is still pending
Publicitas Cinecom & Media currently still holds the marketing mandate for the Swiss private channel 3+. Horrolt said this morning in response to an inquiry from Werbewoche that the company will make every effort in the current talks to continue to manage this mandate. "Publicitas Cinecom & Media will remain in the TV business and continue to focus on business development in the electronic sector. Our team will professionally fulfill its role as marketer of Sat.1 and Kabel eins for the remaining time and wishes the broadcasting group every success for 2011."
A detailed explanation from Sevenone Media as to why it has terminated its cooperation with Publicitas is still pending, Horrolt added. However, talks with Sevenone Media have been announced for the coming days. Sevenone Media's stake in IP Multimedia may be behind this move.
Employees in shock
According to Horrolt, it is not yet clear exactly how many employees at Publicitas Cinecom & Media will be affected by the termination of the two mandates. "We have of course considered the possibility that we will no longer market Sat.1 and Kabel eins," he emphasizes. "After all, we have been waiting a year for the decision on how to proceed. Nevertheless, this news must now settle. We will of course provide the best possible support to the employees affected."
The horror news hits many Publicitas Cinecom & Media employees during or shortly before the vacations - not good timing at first glance. However, negotiations for the 2011 financial year begin in the fall, when every marketer needs to know about their capacities. Horrolt is understanding: "There is no good time for news like this. Sevenone Media naturally waited to see how business would develop this year. I wouldn't have chosen a different time for the termination."

Last but not least: No more beeps for "Fuck"

Swearing will soon be allowed again on U.S. television and radio. The courts have overturned a ban imposed by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), ruling that it violated the right to free speech.

The rules against swearing and other indecent content are unconstitutionally vague and violate the freedom of expression. This was decided by an appeals court in New York on Tuesday. The judges thus confirmed the decision of the court of first instance in a dispute between the FCC and the US broadcasting chain Fox. According to SDA, the court found in 2006 that the current rules had a paralyzing effect on the creation of broadcasting programmes.
To a large extent, the current regulations date back to the 1970s. They ban a whole range of expressions from radio and television. All media that do not overlay these words with an electronic beep face heavy fines. The FCC made a distinction between fiction such as war films and other programs. Accordingly, actors in films are prohibited from using swear words such as "fucking"
is allowed, but not for musicians at a broadcast awards ceremony.
As the appeals court explained, the English language contains many creative ways to describe sexual organs and sexual activity or an erection. Even if the FCC wanted to create a precise list of such words in order to ban them, new swear words and indecent expressions would be added every day.

Temporarily no more Biel Communication Days

There will be no Biel/Bienne Communication Days this year. After eight editions, the Board of Trustees has decided not to hold the Comdays until further notice. The Communication Days have been loss-making for the last two years.

Despite positive feedback from visitors, it was not possible to put the event on a stable economic footing. This was announced by the Biel/Bienne Communication Days Foundation. This means that there is no basis to ensure that the event can continue to be held. The Board of Trustees will examine options for a successor format that can be realized in the medium term. One event is at the forefront of the new Stades de Bienne. This will deal with information and communication technology from a broad perspective.

Tamedia: Merger of regional editorial offices

Tamedia is exploring the possibility of merging the regional newsrooms of the *Tages-Anzeiger* and the regional newspapers. For the first time, company officials provided figures on how many jobs might be eliminated in the case of the Zurich Unterland region.

This is said to involve 8 to 10 jobs. This was confirmed by Tamedia spokesman Christoph Zimmer according to SDA. If Tamedia were to merge the editorial offices, the number of jobs that would be saved would correspond to the number in the smaller of the two editorial offices, according to Zimmer. However, nothing is definite yet.
Tamedia theoretically has until the end of 2010 to complete the restructuring. This is because the cooperation between the Landbote and the Thurgauer Zeitung will then expire, with the Thurgau paper moving to the NZZ and being integrated into the Thurgau edition of the St.Galler Tagblatt, which is owned by the NZZ. In return, NZZ sells its Landzeitung holdings to Tamedia. The regional newspapers include the Zürcher Unterländer, the Zürcher Oberländer and the Zürichsee Zeitung. The latter was previously majority-owned by the Gut publishing family. As of 2010, the Zürichsee Zeitung is now also fully owned by Tamedia.
