Leuenberger criticizes television's country bias

For the first time since announcing his resignation, Federal Councilor Moritz Leuenberger has delivered a public speech. During the event in Uster, the outgoing media minister directly criticized Swiss television.

This shows rural regions disproportionately often and neglects the cities and agglomerations. Leuenberger does not think much of the SRG's justification that city dwellers would rather watch a traditional costume girl in the evening than the traffic jam at Gubrist. It should not be forgotten that three out of four Swiss live in cities and conurbations, said the Federal Councillor.
Leuenberger also sees an imbalance between urban and rural areas in politics, for example in transport policy. The greatest traffic congestion is not at the Gotthard, but in the cities, he said. Before we start talking about a second tunnel at the Gotthard because of the summer vacation traffic, it would be better to discuss how the daily traffic jams in the agglomerations can be managed.

Birkhäuser+GBC: Job cuts continue

The Birkhäuser+GBC printing company in Reinach, Basel-Landschaft, is cutting more jobs: The company, which is part of Basler Zeitung Medien (BZM) and already eliminated 58 jobs last year, is cutting another nine positions.

With the exception of one early retirement, the cutbacks are being made through redundancies for economic reasons, said Managing Director Daniel Merkel on Tuesday, according to SDA, in response to information from the Comedia trade union. Merkel, who is also a member of BZM's group management, justified the cutbacks mainly in advertising printing with the price collapse and lower demand.
According to Merkel, a social plan is in place. In future, the company will still have 340 permanent employees.

Federal Court: No reduced postal rates for Ktipp and Saldo

Ktipp, Saldo and the other publications from the Konsumenteninfo publishing house can definitely no longer benefit from Swiss Post's reduced delivery rates. The Federal Supreme Court has confirmed last year's decision by the Federal Administrative Court.

Until the end of 2007, the consumer magazines Ktipp and Saldo as well as the magazines K-Geld, Gesundheitstipp, Haus & Garten and the radio magazine from the Konsumenteninfo publishing house were transported by Swiss Post at preferential rates. Following the revision of the Postal Act, Swiss Post rejected the requests for price reductions.
Rightly so, as the Federal Administrative Court has now also confirmed, according to SDA. According to the ruling from Lausanne, the preferential tariff may only be granted to organizations that are not profit-oriented. This presupposes that a membership relationship exists between the publisher and the recipient.
Contrary to the opinion of the lower court, this should not be ruled out in the case of Konsumenteninfo simply because it is a public limited company. However, the decisive factor is that Konsumenteninfo does not deliver its publications for a membership fee, but for a subscription fee.

Publicitas loses marketing for Zurich rural newspapers

Starting in January 2011, Tamedia will handle the marketing of the Zurich regional newspapers itself. Publicitas will lose the marketing contract. The company announced this in a press release.

Publicitas' marketing mandate for the Zurich regional newspapers will be taken over directly by Tamedia from January 2011, including all daily newspapers and advertisers involved.
The decision is one of the consequences of the swap of the NZZ Media Group's regional newspaper holdings with Tamedia in the cantons of Thurgau and Zurich, which was announced in April. The Thurgauer Zeitung will be marketed by Publicitas in future.
"Despite this decision, we are looking ahead and are now concentrating on realigning our market presence and market development in the Zurich area," said Astrid Gartenmann, Zurich Branch Director at Publicitas.

Ueli Haldimann leaves Swiss television

Ueli Haldimann, interim director of Swiss Television (SF), is leaving the company. He plans to pursue a new career path. There are differing accounts regarding the reason for his departure.

Haldimann has decided not to return to the position of editor-in-chief, writes Schweizer Radio (SR) in a press release on Friday afternoon. Haldimann himself explains in an internal SF letter, which is available to the news agency SDA, that he had been assured that he would be able to take on the role of TV editor-in-chief again at the end of his interim position. Matter has now "clearly expressed" that he wants to fill the position with a new person.
In this situation, Haldimann says, he decided not to insist on his promised return. Working with the regional director and the new management would not be very promising under the current circumstances. According to the 56-year-old, he will decide what he wants to do in the future over the next few months.
From 2002 to 2009, Haldimann was SF Editor-in-Chief and Head of the Information Department. He was also Deputy Director of Television from 2004 to 2009.
