Doctors are often guided by pharmaceutical advertising instead of the patient

According to studies, doctors are sometimes heavily influenced by advertising and information from the pharmaceutical industry when it comes to their prescribing practices.

Not only do they then prescribe medication to patients more frequently and do not focus on individual needs, but the preparations also tend to be less favorable and more expensive. This is shown by an evaluation of 58 studies that examined the influence of manufacturer information on doctors. Only one study came to the conclusion that the influence of pharmaceutical companies improves the work of doctors.
In all studies, doctors should indicate how much attention they pay to pharmaceutical advertising. They contradict the belief often expressed by many doctors that they are not influenced by information from the pharmaceutical industry.
Doctors inundated with advertising from one manufacturer are more likely to prescribe that brand, regardless of whether it is best for the patient, explains Joel Lexchin of York University in Canada, co-author of the analysis published in the online journal "PLoS Medicine".

Romansh radio receives high marks

The Romansh-language radio station RTR has received praise from the SRG.R Public Council—RTR’s governing body—for its expanded regional newsrooms. The station’s programming has improved significantly in terms of both quality and quantity.

The regional editorial offices of Radio e Televisiun Rumantscha RTR have been expanded at five locations in Graubünden: In Savognin, Ilanz, Disentis, Samedan and Scuol, as the Public Council announced on Thursday. Following the completion of the project in summer 2010, the Council analyzed the radio contributions from the regions. According to the Council, these were given more weight in the program. The journalistic work of the regional editorial offices is judged to be very comprehensive, varied, differentiated, relevant and competent.
RTR and SRG.R are members of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation SRG.

Aargau turns its back on the "Greater Zurich Area" marketing organization

The canton of Aargau is withdrawing from the «Greater Zurich Area» (GZA) regional marketing organization. The canton will end its trial membership as early as the end of October.

However, the GZA remains a possible option for the international location marketing of Aargau. But with the existing organization, orientation and financing of the GZA, no significant improvement in benefits could be achieved, the State Chancellery of Aargau announced on Friday. In May, the cantonal parliament decided at the request of the cantonal government that Aargau should continue its trial membership until the end of the year. Now the Grand Council has criticized the organization's modest cost-benefit ratio across all parties.
Aargau has been a trial member of the "Greater Zurich Area" for five years. During this time, only four companies with twelve jobs have settled in Aargau through the mediation of the GZA. A total credit of CHF 2.95 million previously approved by parliament had not yet been used up. There were still 250,000 francs in the coffers in May. For this reason, Aargau originally wanted to participate on a trial basis until the end of the year.
A GZA working group under the leadership of Government Councillor Urs Hofmann SP has developed measures to rectify the existing weaknesses over the past few months, according to a press release from the State Chancellery. The Board of Trustees had not generally questioned the need for organizational and financial action. However, the proposed changes were not supported. The Board of Trustees has initiated further clarifications. Therefore, the conditions for the Canton of Aargau to continue its membership beyond December 31, 2010 are currently not fulfilled. Under these circumstances, it would also make no sense to remain a member of the GZA in the coming months.
The canton wants to examine various options for international marketing itself. Cooperation with other location marketing organizations or the creation of a new organization in Northern Switzerland are conceivable. Service agreements with private service providers that have a broad network of internationally active agents in the target regions are also possible. However, future membership of the GZA remains an option, provided the necessary changes are implemented.

Marti. Seiler. plays with open cards for Ruckstuhl Garagen

Marti Seiler shows what happens when someone takes the phrase “playing with cards on the table” literally in a new TV commercial for Ruckstuhl Garages. The commercial has been airing on Zurich regional stations since October.

Martin Ruckstuhl did not miss the opportunity to appear in front of the camera himself for the latest TV commercial to announce the good news from his company, the agency writes in a press release. With charm and great acting talent, the entrepreneur irritates a gloomy round of Jass by literally playing his cards face up.
The low-cost production is supported by POS material, which also brings the game with the open cards into the garages.

Last but not least: "Junk words" can expose liars

Managers who present manipulated financial reports often use the personal pronoun «we,» thereby arousing suspicion. This is the conclusion reached by researchers at Stanford University, who analyzed transcripts of nearly 30,000 corporate conference calls from 2003 to 2007.

According to the researchers, the use of "we" instead of "I" means that the managers are relieving themselves of some of the personal responsibility for what they say. Another indication that board members are not speaking the truth, according to the survey, is the use of many so-called "junk words", which are strongly charged with emotion. According to economics professors David Larcker and Anastasia Zakolyukina, the case of Lehman Brothers is an apt example of this. A few months before the collapse in September 2008, CFO Eric Callan used the word "great" 14 times, "strong" 24 times and "incredible" eight times.
According to the press release, the study, which has not yet been published, is intended to help analysts predict risks for investors even if a company's figures have been deliberately falsified. However, whether one can actually conclude a lie from the choice of words in an individual case depends on various factors and is not easy to determine - the probability of incorrect statements by management is always particularly high when emotionally colored words are hardly accompanied by actual strong figures, according to the researchers. I see. So, for example, if the manager talks about an "incredibly strong and great result" and this statement is accompanied by figures in the six-digit minus range, is this a lie?

The ADC judging 2011 is open

The ADC kicks off the competition for the Würfel awards with a number of new features. The deadline for submissions is November 23, 2010.

New: The new media have greater weight
This already starts with the order of the categories: The Digital category now comes first. And in the Film category, it is no longer just TV and cinema that are judged, but also online films. A new category, "Creative Media," has also been created; in addition to traditional media, young media such as the Internet, mobile and social media are also included in this new category. The degree of innovation of the media idea and the excellence of the execution are judged.
New: Direct marketing and promotion are upgraded
The previous category Direct Advertising/POS/Events is now called Direct Marketing and Promotion. Submissions are made in the same way as in comparable international competitions such as Cannes as a case (initial situation, solution, result). It is not about the evaluation of the result - the ADC judges the creativity - but a reaction must be able to be meaningfully proven and be in a context to the creation. This brings the category into line with international standards.
New: The category "Low'n'No" becomes "Small but nice
Because in the past in the category Low'n'No mostly only "No" was submitted and "Low" enough in almost all "commercial" categories, this was renamed to the new category "Small, but fine". This category gives a chance to works that have been created for a client with very little means (guideline value Fr. 30000. for production, media).
New: "3Q
Quality knows no quota. That's why ADC judges according to purely qualitative criteria. Firstly, according to Michael Conrad's "7+" system. And secondly, additionally with "3Q", three questions developed by the new jury chairman Frank Bodin:
1. does it make sense?
2. does it move people and the brand?
3. is it exemplary?
According to the announcement, the three questions are intended to help the jury consider the actual relevance of the work in its assessment. If a work fulfills the three amazingly simple questions, it can expect an award in many cases.
The invitation to tender can be downloaded now: Adc.ch/tender. The award ceremony will take place on January 30, 2011.
