BaZ: Owners stick to Blocher mandate

Robinvest, owned by former SVP Federal Councilor Christoph Blocher, will be able to retain its controversial consulting contract with the Basler Zeitung Media Group (BZM). The editorial staff of the Basler Zeitung (BaZ) has been rebuffed in its demand that the contract be terminated.

BaZ publisher Martin Wagner explained to the editorial committee last Friday that he would not comply with the demand for the immediate termination of the consultancy mandate, the editorial team of the Basler Zeitung announced on Tuesday. It regrets this decision. In the view of the editorial team, the consultancy mandate "damages our reputation and our credibility in the public eye", as the press release states. The editorial team reserves the right to publicize any attempt to exert political influence that it discovers.
BaZ publisher Martin Wagner told the news agency SDA on Tuesday that he and Tito Tettamanti, as owners, felt free to choose who they wanted to consult on business matters. Public pressure has not changed this. The aim is to maintain BaZ as an independent newspaper for the Basel region. Wagner had already pointed out a few weeks ago that Blocher and his company had provided a solution for the recently loss-making company. "purely industrial" consulting and does not influence newspaper content. Wagner did not want to specify how long Robinvest has been advising the media company. That is irrelevant.
For the BaZ editorial team, fundamental questions about the future of the Basler Zeitung remain unanswered. Various discussions with the publisher and editor-in-chief Markus Somm have not been able to provide any answers, the editorial team also stated in its communiqué on Tuesday. The editorial team had hoped for more information from an initial discussion with majority shareholder Tito Tettamanti. However, the latter said a public lecture in Basel on Monday evening as well as a visit to the editorial office planned for Tuesday morning.

Last but not least: Unholy marketing alliance

The agency Connecting Brands specializes in bringing companies together as marketing partners. The latest «pair» that the Hamburg-based firm has matched: a condom brand and a dating service. At least for the condom manufacturer, this partnership has a self-destructive streak.

The reason for the partnership: both the Billy Boy B² condom brand and Elite Partner have exactly the same target group: discerning men and women who are looking for that special treat. A cooperation is therefore an obvious choice. Since mid-November, the condom packaging has come with a 100-euro voucher from the online dating agency. While Elite Partner can only benefit from the cooperation, the on-pack promotion carries certain risks for the condom manufacturer. If the discerning singles find the perfect partner through the dating agency, sooner or later Billy Boy B² is likely to be a thing of the past. This is of course fatal for the condom manufacturer!

Schoch & Sonders: Emmi Kaltbach given a new brand identity

A New Look for Kaltbach: The Zurich-based branding agency Schoch & Sonders has developed a new brand strategy—including design and visual identity—for Emmi’s cheese brand.

Kaltbach's brand values were implemented in an independent design, integrating the existing brand elements. The visualization of the sandstone cave in which the cheese matures and the label-like design with seals are intended to support the statement of quality and genuine cave maturing. Color elements and lettering were used to clearly differentiate the sub-brands. These are intended to symbolize the respective characteristics of each individual product. Kaltbach is currently available in six varieties: Le Gruyère AOC, Emmentaler AOC, raclette, grated cheese, the brand new Kaltbach Extra and fondue.

BaZ: Tettamanti cancels lecture in Basel

Fearing that protests against the Basler Zeitung’s (BaZ) shift to the right might escalate, a lecture by majority shareholder Tito Tettamanti scheduled for Monday evening was canceled at the last minute. Tettamanti had planned to speak on «mediocracy» in the university auditorium.

The 75 percent owner of Basler Zeitung Medien (BZM) was invited by the Basel Statistical and Economic Society as part of its long-term event program. Tettamanti was scheduled to give a lecture entitled "Mediocracy The power of the media: imaginary or real?" However, the society canceled the event on Monday morning: It was "not guaranteed with sufficient certainty that it would take place in a sufficiently orderly manner". According to a spokeswoman for the society, it remains to be seen whether Tettamanti will give his lecture at a later date.
The left-wing party BastA! (Basel's strong alternative) had called for a rally in front of the side entrance to the university near the auditorium. They asked people to bring red cards and whistles. Around 70 people took part in a peaceful rally on Thursday in front of the BaZ editorial office. Acts of sabotage against the distribution of the BaZ are probably related to this: Because unknown persons chained some handcarts or stole newspapers that had been provided, the Monday BaZ could not be distributed to around 4000 addressees, as a BZM spokeswoman confirmed information from the "Regionaljournal Basel" of Schweizer Radio DRS.

Last but not least: More critical than your mother

When the Art Directors Club (ADC) announces an award, it’s looking for only the best of the best. So, as a creative professional, you should really think twice about whether you have what it takes to apply.

This is exactly what Leo Burnett is drawing attention to in an advertising campaign for the ADC Ukraine. It features famous art directors in housewife outfits having a coffee, cooking, knitting or with their pets on their laps. Above it is the slogan "Sorry, we are not your mother", which means something like: Your mother may think some of your creative work is good. Not so the ADC. So beware of applying too quickly, "think twice before submitting to ADC*UA." An absolute eye-catcher!
